If this card was fusion summoned using an opponents monster as a material, it is summoned to the opponents side of the field. Once per turn during each standby phase, this monsters atk is reduced by the atk of the fusion material with the lowest atk. If this cards atk cannot be lowered to exactly 0, it's atk stays at its current atk. This monster cannot change its battle position.

    Funfact the whole heart of the cards is actually Atem using the puzzle’s secret ability. The puzzle allows the user to change their deck, this is why when Atem was battling ontop of the train he kept getting monster cards. He was unknowingly using the power of the puzzle.

    Clarification: it doesn't change their deck, just turns odds in their favor. If you're in a bad position, your chances of getting something to get you out of it are raised, provided your deck has the means to begin with. BUT, this does still account for the Weevil scenario as he needed the initial luck to draw the cards needed to end the duel, and then draw extra to punish Weevil.

    I've always called bs on being a power of his puzzle as literally every other character can do this! Even Kaiba has stated multiple times that he "always draws the right card when he needs it most"..Kaiba doesn't have the puzzle yet has the same power to change fate to draw the right cards; most characters do but it depends on plot (characters only draw the cards they need most when plot needs them to win or draw out a battle for longer lol)

  • @rachelclark6393
    @rachelclark63935 жыл бұрын

    I think the best explanation is that, if we go by the show's internal logic, Yami Yugi is an Egyptian Pharaoh who grew up in a world where all these monsters and spells were real tangible things and he was taught to use them in that way, in actual warfare. His tactics in Duelist Kingdom (mostly) make sense if you assume that each card is real and interacting with the world. Launching an attack at the foundations of a fortress when all your enemies are trapped inside is actually a good tactic. From a military standpoint, he didn't lose much, and his opponents had doomed themselves by not having an escape route. Of course, because we and everyone else know it's a game with specific (if vague) rules, it's total duckbutt. Plus, I always assumed the way things worked in Duelist Kingdom was that if you could justify it happening you could do it. Or we can assume that Yami Yugi merrily heated his way through because Pegaus cheated from the beginning and might actually kill his grandfather so he considered it fair game.

    It is a major ass pull, but it does make sense since their cards are interactive with the "environment" and Pegasus said there were special rules that they'd have to learn. Moon thing, makes sense but wasn't his turn so it was bs. The Duelist Kingdom arc gets a pass since the rules were never stated and we were told that the cards would work differently. Atem may not have had his memories, but he had used those monsters before in the Shadow Games so it's possible that the normal monsters had effects back then that he knew of and could capitalize on with duels more or less free for alls. The only problem with this justification...IT WASN'T YOUR TURN YUGI!!!!! I'll let the stuff he did on his turn pass but unless he was utilizing quick effects that only he recognized because Ancient KoG Pharaoh, his cheats weren't bs moves and explanations...It was playing out of turn. Unless that was another unspoken rule but I doubt there were THAT many special rules. Seto may have his money to screw the rules, but Atem just DGAF.

    The reason why so much was bullcrap in the original first season, is because the manga was released way before the card game was ever planned. The author just pulled rules out of his asshole to make it more interesting for fans to read. The reason why the anime adaptation is so weird in terms of rules for the first season, is because it's a direct adaptation of all the events in the manga. Although if you think about it, it's pretty incredible how Takahashi managed to make random rules into a world wide card game. Hope that cleared it up.

    That is not even how DnD works. You can get creative with the effects of magic or how your use equipment, but you can't really do much of that if you are at a convention and competitively playing (like, some times people will see who can clear a dungeon or beat a big monster the fastest at a con) then the rules tend to be pretty serious and strict. Which is a shame, because I ran some 2e and my friends thought up using Tensor's Floating Disc as an improvised shield so the Cleric wouldn't die or be obviously cheating in his duel with a knight who could not fail to one hit kill the 2 hp cleric if his sword connected. Didn't save the cleric mind you, but it was clever. If you think I was a bad GM for putting them against such a Knight, just going to say that the knight was a lawful good character and they tried to overthrow his realm, not because they thought he was a tyrant but to make money quickly, and he took their challenge to his authority super graciously by saying it was to be resolved through single combat, rather than just having them all executed on the spot by the town guards.

    david savage I was referring to the competitive convention environment of game explicitly. There are people who do that. They do not fail at the game because there is no failing if you are having fun. On the beating the boss notion, that is actually fairly common to this day. Piazo and Wizards of the Coast still publish adventure books that often end in a final boss the players have to overcome and then they have won the module. Lots of people don't use these kinds of modules because they are inherently limited, but others do and in such a case there is a boss after beating which you have completed the story and get a happy ending much like a video game.

Almost all normal monsters, with the exception of yugi's apparently, have no effect in the anime, and it shows. Also, saying "some cards have a different effect in the anime" is valid, what doesn't make sense is when it shows the original effect of a monster like Catapult Turtle in one episode, then some made up Bs in another. Just cause its the anime, and the rules weren't as strict as they are now, there were still rules, monsters still had effects only if they were effect monsters, along with traps and spells, and yugi is just a bit of a cheater. it's fine I guess cx

But now as grown adults, we look back at this show and with our knowledge of almost every card in the first generation of Yu-Gi-Oh, there are a lot of questions to ask about what Yugi did and why he did the things he did.

    It's simple really. There were no rules for season 1, the official rules didn't exist yet.

  • @KefkeWren
    @KefkeWren8 жыл бұрын

    Okay, no. Season one (and arguably most of classic Yu-Gi-Oh) can't count. First of all, the anime is still mostly based on the manga at that point, which was created _before_ the game. Which means that, technically, it's the anime/manga that are right, and _the TCG_ which got the rules wrong! Secondly, though, the explanation is given in canon that the rules have undergone several revisions over the course of the series, which is why it starts out with the vastly more complex and realism based manga-rules of Season 1, before eventually settling into the more strict to TCG portrayals of the later series. *EDIT:* Third of all, it is important to differentiate the game in the series from the real-world game _based on_ the series, as they are clearly different games, and in more ways than just life point totals. In a lot of the matches you cite, the game is being processed by a computerized system, as well as remotely monitored by humans. Yet, all of the matches proceed, showing that in-universe what Yugi is doing is considered legal play. The VR system even has animations for things like crashing the flying castle and attacking the moon! Why is that? Well, as I hinted at above, in the manga and original episodes, Duel Monsters doesn't run on strict "card rule logic". It runs on something closer to real world rules of cause and effect. There are probably still limits, but in general Original Duel Monsters is a little closer to something like Dungeons & Dragons than it is to Magic: The Gathering. Cards do have rules, but the rules for cards are not rigidly defined. For example, how no player has an Extra Deck or fusion monster cards, so certain cards like Time Wizard and Polymerization are just able to change monsters in whatever way makes sense. So, just like how in D&D a player might not have a specific rule for a wall made of spiked blades, but could still combine a _Wall of Iron_ spell and a _Fabricate_ spell to produce one, Yugi may not have a specific card that says "Attack the castle's flight ring", but can combine a card that launches monsters with a monster skilled at aerial combat to produce that effect. In both cases, logic is applied to resolve what happens after that (probably adjudicated by some tournament official up in the control room in Yugi's case).

  • @michaeluhlhorn8418

    You could also add stuff about the battle with Dartz. He ignored the fact that Dartz broke the "rules" according to the TCG by summoning Divine Serpent Geh by sacrificing all his life points. Then when Yugi does the combo with the two atlantean knights, he creates the summoning condition for Timaeus the Knight of Destiny, which when summoned by this way has infinite attack. And when two monsters with equal attack battle, both are destroyed. Dartz lost because the only thing keeping him in the duel was the clause that as long as Geh was alive he wouldn't lose. As Geh was destroyed but the monster that Yugi was using with the same clause wasn't Yugi won.

    My excuse personally for all the season 1 shenanigans is just that pegasus changed all the rules to make it more like actual monster fights, like way back in ancient egypt days. Since he is rich and this is his tournament, and weevil does say there are new rules, I found it plausible. I don't know why pegasus wanted to do that (maybe since he wants millennium item holders it'd be easier for them to duel their way to the top in the style their spirits are most familiar with?) but it at least makes marginal sense, and why Yami Yugi knew the game so well.

    8:37 Tecnically is not a shenanigan, more like 4Kid's fault. It's exactly like Joy's shenanigan of summoning Flame Swordman, a fusion monster, like it was a normal one. In the original anime, that card was actually a spell card. It was later turned into a trap card and because of that, assuming that change was made before 4Kid started to dub the episode, they turned it into a trap card

    Some of these "screw the rules" moments were explained in the japanese version, such as in the battle city rules it was stated that cards that special summon monsters, with exeptions like monster reborn, can be used by both players regardless of who play it, this also allowed the pharaoh to summon red-eyes in his duel with kaiba, also in the japanese version light force sword is a quick-play spell card, not a trap

    I have a feeling that the majority of these 'shenanigans' is you trying to use the Yu-Gi-Oh! card game rulings and card effects to call out Yugi using the original cards in Duel Monsters. Which doesn't work, because Yu-Gi-Oh! is loosely based off the card game from the Anime and Manga. While the Anime depicts the manga card game more faithfully and has different rules. Also since cards exist in the Anime/Manga first, using the real life effect to contradict is faulty, because the real life effect isn't the original, it's an altered version. In other words, it's like saying someone's cheating because they don't play Poker with the exact same rules as Black Jack.

    But in the last episode of GX Yugi cheats on Jaden with that trap to summon slifer. He missed timing he said "It can be activated when you summon a monster" but Jaden already attacked before he could activate it. And all the rules in GX stay the same as the rules we play by now (besides draw 6 on 1st turn)

    Honestly, at the beginning of Yugioh duel monsters, i think the rules were "logic". If a card multiplies a card, go on forever. If moon is boosting the sea, destroy it, get rid of problem. Monster uses sword, Harpie can fly over him. As long as it makes sense in real world, it was a rule

  • @JCKane
    @JCKane2 жыл бұрын

    Well, I'm going to go through the points because there are a few that aren't exactly shenanigans. The biggest thing is that in the Duelest Kingdom arc, there were added some 'DnD' elements to it. Meaning it wasn't just straight dueling but things don't work exactly as you'd expect. So now each of the points. 10) Exodia Pull: as you said, it's not cheating. He just was SUPER lucky... that or like with Yugioh GX, his 'deck' is some kind of 'sentient' and gives Yugi the cards he needs, if he just trusts in it. aka the Heart of the Cards. 9) Multiply Kuriboh: This has to do with those 'DnD' elements. Multiply was already established to be 'infite' in an earlier duel so that was fine. So he didn't do anything illegal. ON top of that, if you think about it. The duel arena he was using would of had that type of move programmed in. Thus, if it wasn't possible, the system wouldn't of allowed it to happen. This is the case with alot of the DnD elements. 8) Dark Sage: Another of the DnD elements. As I read in this one forum, certain cards aren't actually physical cards. Fusion Monsters are one of them. So when you see them play a fusion monster, you see that the physical two cards that were fused are still on the arena. And even polymerization. The one that Yugi used was built into the system, not an actual card. Part of why knowing the rules of the game, not just the cards was a bigger importance (and made more sense) in the Duelist Kingdom arc.| 7) Magician Curtain: While I agree, it's another example of the Anime's card effects being different than real life. 6) 3 headed Dragon and a curse: Another example of the DnD stuff. Including how fusions work. You mentioned "Yugi just made it up as he went along" well, why would the system even allow it to happen if it wasn't a legal move? 5) Infinite attack: Yeah this one I can give you. True again the system allowed it to work, but it does feel more "This shouldn't of worked" unlike the other ones as I can understand why. 4) Attack the Moon: Another example of the DnD aspect of the game. 3) I agree, but if I recall, they did that alot, allowing trap cards to be played whenever you liked. 2) The blue eyes hacking: Well yeah, it was hacking. Granted the mystical elf part was example of the DnD stuff. But Kaiba's involvement is true, it was cheating. 1) Crumbling Castle: Another example of the DnD stuff. As even placement seems to have an affect on it.f

    It's worth pointing out that several of these "rules breaks" are going off of things that didn't really work the same way back then. For example, Time Wizard actually aging cards (including his own Baby Dragon) instead of necessarily destroying them, or the fact that many cards weren't actually, well, cards. That last bit is important. Fusion didn't work the way it does now in the real game. Fusion cards weren't even real! You didn't have separate cards to represent a fusion, you just combined the cards' traits using a system that wasn't really explained in the anime but got decent lip service in the manga. It was assumed that any cards of compatible attributes could fuse, not just ones with a pre-existing Fusion card.

And at that time in my non-native English speaking country I was the only kid around who could read English text and the card effects... And boy oh boy, was I the king of games under these circumstances. I was basically altering the card effects to fit my needs at any given time. Oh man, those were good times :D And the even funnier part is that nobody even questioned the fact my cards were doing different things ever so often. Eh, in the end , couple of years after these events I was still mostly dismantling my buddies even in fair duels. So I had legit skill, but I'll never forget what it felt like to have that sweet plot armor on your side! :D

    My theory is the Millennium Puzzle allows its wielder to make up rules on the fly and brainwash an opponent into accepting it, much like the Jedi Mind Trick. No one questions that Pegasus has an unfair advantage with his mind-reading Millennium Eye, and the Puzzle is clearly the strongest of the Millennium Items, so it stands to reason that the Puzzle gives you an even stronger unfair advantage.

    Well "cheat" based on the rules Konami made for the game later on, but in terms of the story they make sense since it was playing based on logic. The moon controlling the oceans and destroying it would cause a tidal wave is a logical conclusion to come to. The whole Duelist Island concept setup the card game to be more dynamic, you weren't just playing with the cards but also taking advantage of the field that was generated by the cards.

    well when you think about it. the "duel monsters" the pharaoh is used to has no spells/traps you have to just summon monsters and make them more powerful with your own strength so maybe they "screw the rules" because the pharaoh isn't used to spells and traps so he has to make shit up like 5,000 years ago. And maybe the other duelists don't stop him because they also don't know if you can do that. So the pharaoh just keeps doing it because nobody has told him he can't do that.

    The Millenium puzzle supposedly grants him the ability to literally “will” cards to the top of his deck that he needs. The more desperately he needs the card, the better the odds he will get it.

    My theory is that Pegasus programmed the arenas according to the rules of the dark Egyptian game, but all the players were by sensible and reasonable rules, except Yugi, that was the only one who knew the BS rules.

    Technically, Bakura was the one who decided that Change of Heart didn't work (his soul was in the card, so he retargeted to his own monster), because he wanted Yugi to win.

    When some of my friends were over and we were playing together, one of my friends actually opened with Exodia. We were all floored when this happened, save for the friend who actually pulled it because they weren’t really into the game all that much so we had to quickly explain just how hard and next to impossible that was to do. Still we got a kick out of it. Now I’ve been playing this game for many years and I on occasion use an Exodia deck, and that has been the only time I’ve ever seen it happen myself. Even I haven’t opened with Exodia.

    David Vasquez Yes we did. Another reason we were all stunned by it. Though I guess you could say it wasn’t exactly their opening hand. They were going second, and when they drew their sixth card, it was the last Exodia piece. So kind of their opening hand, and kind of not. Really just how you look at it.

    Excuse me, the most "C"MON NOW!!" cheating moment in YuGiOh was Dark Magician Girl handing Anzu/Tea "Sage's Stone" & summoning Dark Magician FROM YUGI'S DECK 500 YARDS AWAY to beat Crump (Episode 103)!! I mean, she literally gave her a card that wasn't in her Deck!!

    I remember I watched the season with Noah and Yugi and joey were dueling the big five in Tristans body and yugi just straight summons Dark Magician Girl with no tributes or card effect. I rewatched that scene so many times but still couldn't figure how that was possible
