    Tucker Stackow Also, wrong on two counts. Metroid was released in 1986, but for the Famicom Disk System in Japan. Where it _did_ have saves right to the diskette. WatchMojo is talking about the NES release which did not have saves and instead used a password system, which was released in mid 1987. So they are half wrong about the year and about it not having saves depending on how you look at it.

    That's most likely because the people who made this video, weren't even alive in the 80's. AKA no real concept of how games actually were, therefore making a proper "poorly aged" list, is impossible without being 100% subjective. I can think of 50 games right now that aged worse than all of these games combined.

    Eric Durant You're basing all of what you just said on a "most likely". And even if it were true, it isn't very difficult to find and play these games to _become_ 100% subjective.

    A lot of people don't understand this list. Saying a game aged poorly doesn't mean to say that it's bad, it just means that developments within the industry mean that it's not as mind-blowing now as it was when it was released. I still play GTA III from time to time and find it fun to play, but I still acknowledge that it certainly hasn't aged like wine. It was already looking dated when Vice City launched a year later, it was practically prehistoric by the time San Andreas launched, and comparing it to GTA V is like comparing a GameBoy to PS Vita.

  • @chesspunk489

    I think most people do understand what the list was trying to go for. However, saying that a game has aged poorly is a subjective opinion. Many people don't share the same opinion as watch mojo so they feel the need to speak out.

    But picking games that were a first in a series doesn't really make sense because the sequels improved on the orignals in most of the cases. So to say that the original game didn't age well is disingenuous. For example, after playing Mortal Kombat 2 or 3 made it hard to come back to part one because of how limited it is when you go back to it. ex.. 1 fatality and 2 special moves per character vs. double or triple the amount in the subsequent games. If this is the criteria, then you could add a lot more games to the list that were a first in the series, that after 2 or 3 iterations of it, the orignal is now antiquated.

    "ambiguous puzzles" had nothing to do with age. You're basically saying the puzzles are too hard. Most developers today treat gamers like dimwits. Big fat arrows on screen showing where to go at all times for example. Hardest puzzles today are where you find a big cilinder shaped key, and 5 minutes later you find a door with a square shaped hole and one with a cilinder shaped hole. Thankfully some developers still expect gamers to figure out stuff for themselves and figure out what's happening by using cryptic details and their imagination. You know what game I'm talking about here. Any other modern games do this? I'm curious.

    CeetjeBeetje There's a difference between games that challenge the player with puzzles that test their wits, and puzzles that test their patience. While the latter is still common today, it's less so now that certain gameplay elements such as in-game maps, checkpoints, and internalized checklists have become standard. Basically, anti-frustration features. When creating puzzles, you need to answer one important question to determine if your puzzle is hard, or just cruel: "With the clues and tools present in game, is the player able to figure out the solution?" Requiring the player to do homework to figure out how to progress further in the game is a good way to lose their attention, so balancing "frustrating" with "difficult" becomes key. And then there's the whole can of worms of 90s Moon-logic puzzles that cropped up due to a combination of developers running out of new ideas and limitations on game systems.

    wolvesleather I honestly can't agree with your Oblivion statement after all the times I've talked to an NPC only to have the camera forcibly zoom in on those overly shiny, chubby faces with zombie eyes. At least it was better than Morrowind (talk about horrible aging) and its origami stick-figure residents. Who turned Vivec City into Silent Hill? Spending half the game walking around was bad enough even before realizing the horrible fog made it impossible to get my bearings. Metroid Prime was released the same year as Morrowind, on Gamecube no less, and to this day still looks amazing.

    Samniss Arandeen GTA 3 is horrible. Crash bandicoot is still good and oblivion is amazing still. The detail in a lot of the textures isn't that bad and just throwing on a simple lighting mod makes it look better than skyrim and for that matter there's full model re-placers for much better characters and bam you have skyrim but a million times more fun and less gray.

    It certainly is. That fact that most of the game still holds up is probably why it's just an honorable mention and not on the list. The 1st game was the only one without analog support, which was a problem with the boulder levels. You had to keep jumping in order to move diagonally. I'm guessing that's the main reason they mentioned the game at all, as there is nothing wrong with the graphics, and the rest of the game holds up fine.

    TheMadisonMachine I had a similar reaction... I don't get why it was even an honorable mention, it couldn't be the gameplay, as that has aged wonderfully. It couldn't have been on there because of its graphics as they aren't as bad as a lot of other classic, old games.( For example. Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Smash 64. This isn't saying that any of the aforemntioned games are bad, just that they had arguably worse graphics than Crash Bandicoot.)

    Pokeplayer I really don't get why it was there either! I have 1, 2, and CTR on my ps3 and they really do hold up. A friend of my mom's has a 10 year old, and he really liked 2. The gameplay is still fresh, and some of the later levels of each game still hold some challenge in them, even though I've played them all over and over. Crash 2 really has amazing graphics, due to the art style, AND the soundtrack, while definitely dated, is still really well written. (Thanks, Mark Mothersbaugh!)

    ***** I dunno, much as I actually enjoy Final Fantasy VIII, much of its gameplay involves drawing magic from enemies, which can slow the pacing down and the Triple Triad game can get frustrating at times. On the other hand, I enjoyed the character dynamic around Laguna, Kiros and Ward. The material system of VII allows for great customisation of character abilities. I'm back playing VII again and I still find that the gameplay is still fun. But that's my opinion.

    The thing is, the focus was not on the games' gameplay and/or contents because as he said, the games were not bad games. The games were fun back in the day, and surely they would be 'fun' today. Though, because of those technical limitations, they aged badly in terms of the graphics and controls. Today's games are often more fluid and more immersive because of how much the graphics have improved. If the games were remastered, they would be more fun for today's generation, because of how used to we are to good graphics and fluid mechanics. Nostalgia aside, these games did not age well.

  • @MarkusReese

    @MarkusReese

    +ELVISFX and to the others, I didn't think it was really that click bait... Purpose of it really was what games were absolute top end winners when they came out, but if we play them today, we hate them. Many of these games were like that. There are a good many classics I still play going all the way through to some of the first NES games and early computer games before that. Goldeneye and resident evil for example from this vid fit perfectly for what they are trying to say. Who knows how much I played these when they came out? But now, the controls and cheesiness is apparent. Little to no enjoyment is felt. FF7 I did not agree with. The scenes, music and story are still very well done and moving. Most players don't even notice or care about the model differences and primitiveness. the cutesy/quirky non combat/cinematic style actually adds a bit of fun to it and mood.

I immediately thought of FF7 when I clicked this video, but I didn't think WatchMojo would have the balls to list it. Most of the games on this list I've thought didn't age so well. The only ones I wasn't too keen on was Metroid and Mortal Kombat (moreso Metroid), as I believe 2D games tend to age FAR FAR better than 3D games, especially early 3D games.

    Roger Haywood There was Shattered Memories, but I guess that was too much of an overhaul to be considered a remake? And yeah, there's an HD collection, but it just has poor ports of 2 and 3 (no 1), and the graphics are unimproved (just rendered in 720p). You *can* use an emulator to play the original (from a file or from the PS1 disc) in HD, however. You can add texture filtering to reduce the pixelation, and the "PCSXR" emulator even lets you tone down the PS1's inherent shaky polygons.

    +TheTRUE BAUSE I agree that they talk a bit too much about graphics, but the comments about other dated aspects (like the lack of map in Metroid and the bad voice acting in RE) are still valid. Goldeneye, for example: although it could be called innovative at its time, it got completely outdated after Perfect Dark, that has its same qualities, but with a lot more content (but also has the awful framerate and controls for today's standards, although the N64 controller is more to blame than the game itself)

    +TiodaniPKM How can a game age badly? Specifically these games? Aging badly would be several sequels looking worse than the original imo. Who would be dense enough to compare new generation games to ones made in 1996 (RE for example)?

    A game that aged badly is one that that have flaws or gameplay aspects that were overlooked or considered normal at their time, but would not be tolerated today. Graphics can also contribute to show a game's age (one of the reasons why early 3D games are said to age worse than 2D games), but graphics alone doesn't matter too much. An example of a game that hasn't aged at all for me is Super Mario World: it still has super responsive controls, good visuals, good amount of content, and still offers a great and fair challenge. It could have been released today as an Indie game and anyone could have a blast playing it, unlike, for example, Doom, that, although being one of my favorite games, wouldn't please someone playing it for the first time today as much as it pleased 20 years ago, since modern FPS players don't have the patience to deal with the maze-like design of the levels, having to search for keys, and stuff (not to mention that it only used keyboard controls, while everyone today is used to mouse + keyboard for FPS)

    ***** "Doesn't hold up well" is a stupid thing to say. The games haven't changed. Your perception of them is different than when the games came out. People loved these games when they came out. They saw the charm in the awkward 3d block hands (chibi sprites on the SNES weren't any better in that regard.) The difference is that you hold it to a higher standard subconsciously. The problem is your own vision. This is why people who have played a game for more than a decade (like FFVII) don't see it the same way people who have mostly played modern games. They don't nitpick the graphics. They are able to be immersed by them to a large enough degree to waste many hours playing. Graphics should never be part of the "hasn't aged well" category. Graphics like art do not have an expiration date. It's a shallow consumer mentality to treat them like they do. Gameplay and frustration should be the only things to consider, and even those just point out how babied current gamers are with their piss easy games.

    iovandrake i agree with you in almost everything you say, but i disagree in the regards of FF VII blocky ugly look, its not great now, sure i can play the game with no problem because i played the heck a lot of that one game but it has age poorly atleast in the character blocky look, the background looks good and the music is still good, the gameplay is still fun and the story is still great. Look Sprites age better than 3d ugly polygons, why do you think almost no one complains about chrono trigger, perhaps the best JRPG of all time? Because it does everything almost perfect. ( well for me is not that great but i have to admit that the game was a Blast to play, sadly it took me 20 years to give it a try)

  • @iovandrake

    @iovandrake

    9 жыл бұрын

    Sprites "age better" (getting sick of this notion, they don't age, they are inanimate objects with digital data on them, YOU AGE) because they are more like a cartoon. They are not representing a 3D space to you. This tricks your brain which is used to cartoon like art into finding it acceptable. The closer to the quality of cartoon/animation the sprites are the better your ability to accept it. A 3D image though is moving into the realm of what you see around you with your eyes in reality. Which raises the bar substantially for 3D polygonal images. What's different between FFVII's characters vs FFVI's? They both have deformed bodies with exaggerated or cutesy bodies. They both have simple color schemes. They both represent bodies in similar ways. Lastly they both have higher detailed versions of the characters in battle as compared to out of battle. With all these similarities what's the difference? The difference is that you view FFVI as a cartoon and you view FFVII as a virtual reality that is failing to live up to your standards for virtual reality. What's ironic about this whole thing is that I know a LOT of people who would consider FFVI to have "aged poorly" as well. Simply because it isn't 3D, has slow plodding action, static enemies in battles, and a plethora of other reasons. I don't agree with them (I play games that don't even have any graphics at all), but that's the way perception works. You perceive FFVI's graphics to be good. They do not. You perceive FFVII's blocky characters to be bad. I do not. Perception, not imaginary expiration dates. For that matter people joked about FFVII's blocky characters when it first came out. There was no age necessary. It all depended on perception.

  • @iovandrake

    @iovandrake

    9 жыл бұрын

    I don't prefer them, but I have enough of an imagination to not be bothered by them. That'd the difference I was trying to explain. Perception makes the difference in how you view different visuals. As far as nostalgia I've never heard ANY Final Fantasy VII fan say "man I sure love the way those blocky characters look, I'm glad they don't look real." It isn't nostalgia making them like the characters, it is them liking the game that makes the look of the characters not matter. That player sees them more as characters/people in a story than block things. Their immersion is deeper and thus their perception of the way it looks is different. Are they ugly as far as representations of people? Sure. As far as stylized representations of characters in a fictional story? Their look is serviceable.

    Now I don't agree with everything on this list, but many of them are spot on. For a game to truly age well, it has to be timeless. "Playable" just isn't going to cut it if you're building a true list. Look at the early iterations of Halo, Counter strike, COD, and Half Life. They're all over a decade old as well.

When I bought this game a few years ago and played it I said "this game looks like shit, and is a piece of cloud's shoulder missing? and the backgrounds are horrible! why do people love this game so much? sure graphics aren't everything but there is a boundary" after a few years I played the game again and the game still looked horrible but I soldiered through it and got engrossed in the story and loved every single second of it, but what would happen if someone else bought the game and stopped playing it because they couldn't look at the HORRIDLY aged graphics? They would just write it off

    I suppose all those dislikes doesn't heard the first thing they said about games which were good but compared to today's standard and appeal to their nostalgic feeling of "oh, don't you talk shit about (insert old game), boy!" Granted, it started as a possible countdown of games which does not look good or don't have the gameplay of a varied mechanic but ended as complains of the bad stuff about them, mere critics, instead of the main reason of the video. But face it people, when you have to buy or convert your pc or mac spending thousand of dollars to retrograde your machine or installing software to slow down the system enough just to play a game which probably only you remember and your kids woulnd't even try by themselves? that's a fine example of games that aged badly.

    Not really. Super Mario Bros 1 has an art style that complements the graphical abilities of the console it was on and its gameplay is still tight, responsive and fun. It's essentially timeless. Many of the games on this list are clunky and difficult to play by today's standards and their art direction is either ugly to begin with or really wasn't appropriate for the era. Pretty much anything that tried to look realistic from the 5th gen and before.

The control complaints are invalid because of the option to use the analogue stick to aim, leaving the c buttons for digital control of forward and back, and strafing, which is no different to WASD controls on PC. Still play Goldeneye multiplayer with friends, where the tremendous balancing and a dose of nostalgia still generate fun and laughs. Still enjoy the campaign too actually. Plus in single player there is a control scheme that allows you to use two controllers for dual analogue control, which works surprisingly well.

Super Mario World, Street Fighter Alpha 1, 2 and 3: King of Fighters 94 - 2000, Flashback, Blackthorne, Starcraft, Sonic 1, 2 and 3; even some 3D games as Duke Nukem 3D and Serious Sam. Street Figther EX and Xmen vs Street Fighter are from the same year, if you understand where I'm going... The problem are the games of early 3D times. Most of them have horrible controls by today standards, or graphics were ok for the time, but now are really old.

    Yeah but you gotta admit that the part when they mentioned Tomb Raider and complained that it didn't have analog support, when the analog controllers (I say that because there was a PS1 controller with analog sticks before the Dualshock) weren't even a thing when this game was released (It was even admitted by the bar when that appears at the beginning of a part of the video, as if they didn't know that). As far as I know, it's really more or less opinion. Also, these games are near and dear to these people's hearts, so it's somewhat understandable that they complain when this happens. Lastly, I'm pretty sure that it doesn't count for a game to age badly if they aren't possessing the same standards we expect from modern games, nor does it count if they do something that was revolutionary for the time, at the expense of something else because of technical limitations (Yes, those aspects were perfected by other games of that time, but only because they didn't have anything that caused other problems due to said limitations). Then probably every old game would age badly.

    Jake Murrin Presentation-wise, SA2 is a step up. Gameplay-wise, however, even in Sonic & Shadow stages, took step backwards. I'll just say every homing attack from SA to 06 was flawed since a lot of the time it won't home into the enemy. But one my biggest problem with SA2's speed stages is the flat, linear, hallway-like level design. In SA, the levels felt grand & had multiple paths you could take to get to the end, even rewards you for being curious & exploring the level, such as items & paths that aren't noticed like jumping off the building in Speed Highway to skip all the way to the helicopter part. The game felt like an actual adventure. In SA2, I don't get adventure vibes from SA2; I get 90s action flick. I took the time to actually explore the levels, God-forbid, & there were rare occurrences where there was a path that strayed away from the normal that actually mattered. You're given that path & that's it. On top of that, a lot of the levels felt copy & paste with the same part of the level you saw earlier in the level. The other problem with the speed stages is the action button. I don't know what Sonic Team's obsession, fetish, whatever you want to call it, with putting multiple attacks on one button. I'll admit the Light Speed Dash is more convenient than in SA. Problem is when you put it on the same button as the Somersault, you either Light Speed Dash or Somersault to your death because you were just one little step off from the trail of rings. To make matters worse, you get the Bounce Bracelet later and now that's on the same button. So if you need to Light Dash in the air, chances are you're going to die because the game registered it as the Bounce Attack. The funny part is you don't really need the Bounce Attack if you want to beat the game unless it's that one part where you find it and even then it's possible to skip it.

    Kyle Broflovski You still don't even understand the purpose of this list? Mortal Kombat *does* look like crap if you look at it today. It even had pretty sub-par graphics for when it was released. It is *not* a bad game, they specifically said so in the beginning. This list is about good games that are kind of bad when looking at them today/they were better before/they aged badly.

    In 007 Golden Eye, I customized my controls and made sure left and right steps were the left right yellow C buttons. So as I ran and pointed in any direction, I could also smoothly transition into running sideways and direct the camera as desired. When I got the hang of that mechanic, I quickly became the best 007 golden eye player I've ever encountered. Only a few other people really had side stepping down.

    +Remrie Arrie (Duckshorts) Whoever made this list was on point until his final 2 games. It is pure blasphemy to say GTAIII has aged badly considering it could be argued it's the greatest game of the series and possibly of all time. Goldeneye at #1 was complete horseshit as well, really lost all credibility for the list after that.

    i feel the need to point out that in golden eye i used the control style called solitaire which is basically the same as using the 'c' buttons as the second analogue and my friends used to get pissed that i could freely aim while walking. .. just sayin', that was an option.

    Wtf WatchMojo? You seriously trying to tell me that GTA 3 (an all time classic that has set the foundation for many games today) has aged worse than Mortal Kombat and nearly as badly as Goldeneye? As much as I like the PS1 GTAs, you should have put those on here instead since they are inferior to most other sandbox/free roam games at the time.

    Ian cd There is a big list out there of all the broken mechanics in RB, some of them are: -Focus Energy was supposed to increase your critical rate but it actually does the opposite of that -If you raised your stats too much (with Swords Dance or Agility) the stats would actually become negative -Psychic type is way too much broken -The Special stat was stupid -The AI is kinda dumb (but it is dumb even the new games so yeah) And it goes on and on...

    vgRealm How far are you? Any further than your last video? I'm long past that. I'd say the outdoor areas drag a bit, but overall it's at least made with love, if not perfection. I'd used the fixed camera, though. You can get used to it, as crazy as it seems at the start. I think the 'tracking' one cripples the game experience, at least for me. My other problem is you can save every five seconds. I've started limiting my saves to one per 'section', whatever I decide that is.

    Having to plot out my own map while playing Metroid was part of what made the game so amazing. The fact that I wasn't told where to go by a computer or a little blip on my display. The fact that I could actually get lost. The fact that the game wasn't just on the screen but also in my head to the point that I had to put it on paper, extending it into the real world. Call that a weakness if you want, but it made the game feel larger and forced me to... what's the word?... Explore.

    I honestly love how the old blocky graphics look. it's amazing what they were able to accomplish with only a few polygons. I never tire of those old blocky graphics, and of course I heartily disagree with this list. I think several of these games still look good today, just because the graphics are more basic doesn't override the fact that they are colorful, stylish, and best of all exttemely fun to play.

These games were great in their time .. but now .. anywhere from eh to eww.

    kyle wolman While Mario 64 at the time was a huge thing and made changes to gaming overall, it doesn't really hold up all to well. That is likely why they re-mastered it for the DS, which is also not aging too well, but not as bad as the N64 version. While my favorite game of all time, not being a N64 game but a Gamecube game, Wind Waker's cell shaded style seems to hold up quite a bit more then other games around the early Gamecube era.

    - Those Final Fantasy bulky characters made me remember games like "Ecstatica", where every character was made of spherical bumps - I think in GTA 3 10th anniversary they gave a map for the game (i don't remember if in GTA Liberty City Stories Rockstar made an ingame map for Liberty City) - Couple of years before i played Hitman Blood Money, so i replayed afer that Hitman Contract and after that Hitman Silent Assassin, and at last Hitman Codename 47. It's so incredible how different is Blood Money from the original game.
