The worst part is that since Chuckie's mom left a diary for him, noting that she would be 'leaving him behind', that meant the show tackled another hard point; our own mortality from sickness. She had something terminal and knew her time was up. We can only assume it was likely cancer.

As a kid, I started to wonder why doesn't Chuckie have a mom like the other Rugrats babies did and where is his mother. Then one year when a Mother's Day episode came out when I was twelve, I just had to stay tuned and watch that episode. That episode had the answer to my inquiry: his mother passed away from terminal illness. Ouch 😭. In a warm flashback in the Mother's Day episode, before her passing, she picked up baby Chuckie, told him he was okay and to not be scared. So cute and adorable scene. I think her passing might have something to do with why Chuckie was scared of everything and worried about things possibly going wrong when his friends were up for an adventure. Mama's no longer here to reassure Chuckie that there is nothing in this world to fear. Chuckie's father is just as much as a worrywart as him so he's unable to assure and show him that things he fears like clowns and the funny guy on the oatmeal box is harmless and won't harm him. Chas is just as deathly afraid of clowns like Chuckie is. So he wouldn't be any help in helping little Chuckie overcome his fear of clowns phobia. Or have anything to worry about.

I always remember one episode that when Didi was trying to discover her ‘inner goddess’ she was told to forget being a wife and mother. Instead she proudly stated she was a woman, not a goddess who loved nothing more that being a wife and mother, and it was great! Also, I love that Lucy is a doctor and a great mother and showed that a woman can have a career, hobbies and be a great mother all at the same time.

My Mom was a teacher when I was growing up. She found time to help me with my homework/projects, do laundry, cook a meal for supper, tidied the house, make my lunch, take me to piano lessons or Youth Club, ensured I took a bath/brushed my teeth before bed, read to me before I went to sleep, gave hugs/kisses/tucked me in, made sure I had a clean outfit to wear to school the next day, etc. all before doing her lesson plans for school and correcting her students' papers!

I will always love rugrats! As an adopted Asian female, seeing Kira and Chaz together made me so happy. Especially when they adopted each other's kids and everyone was loving and accepting. I feel like rugrats always handled topics so well.

I loved what Rugrats did with the blended family The episode where Kira accidentally step over boundaries with Chuck but apologizing was nice… Too bad all grown up ruined that by introducing Kimi’s biological dad and him showing up with a new baby.. I mean the guy clearly didn’t want nothing to do with Kimi when she was literally a baby what make you think he going to be there for the new kid?

The fact that Susie taught the babies how to unionize is beyond hilarious to me

Rugrats was a classic show. I loved Chucky's arc from learning about his deceased mom and then Kira adopting him. Nobody deserved someone in their life more than he did. Chaz too.

I distinctly remember owning the Rugrats in Paris music tape and, whenever that song played (I think it was "I want a Mom...") I lost it. I still had my mother, but it always got to me and I would always go find my mom whenever I heard it.

On a deeper note for the anxiety. Chuckie is the only character who lost a parent early which could be a reflection of traumatic events triggering anxiety responses.

@@tierefuerimmer9635 Actually, while it may be true that he cannot remember her-- if you look into the scholarly literature, it's more common for children to show increased anxiety and depression even when the parental death occurs during infancy.

The Mother’s Day episode definitely had some things that flew over when you were a kid. Like when the other babies talk about when they were barely a year old. Phil and Lil say that the first gift they gave their mom was laughter. Looking further into that scene, Betty might have had postpartum depression. So that laughter really helped her. Tommy says he just knew who his mom was when he was in a “fish tank”. Looking back the fish tank was actually an incubator. Meaning that Tommy was premature.

I always loved the Rugrats . Espeially the one with the one where Chaz tells Chucky about his deceased mother too . Especially cause I just lost my foster mother due to a stroke and I been going through a lot with it

Another serious issue: It’s revealed in the Mother’s Day episode that Tommy was born premature. I guess this is why he’s so brave

Beautiful in every sense. Rugrats definitely was ahead of its time, especially with the holidays. Totally miss this Nicktoon. Life lessons and serious issues were pretty much the order of the day for me just watching it. ❤️

It’s back with a new reboot on Paramount+, with the OG writing team. Alternate continuity, but it beautifully respects what the original brought to the table, but revamping constituents to appeal to young and old alike.

Rugrats will always be a soft spot in my heart.❤

The I Remember Melville episode was one of the best episodes written to explain death to children. It was beautifully well written and Tommy took the lead as always but what I liked best about this episode was that no adults not even Angelica were in this episode. I love how they wrote Tommy as a mentor to Chuckie. The Mother's Day episode hit home for me as I lost my Mom on March 31, 2007. I love how Chaz eventually softly and gently told Chuckie about his Mom

It not only shows how the children deal with it, but that adults deal with it as well. And maybe it takes some time to explain to a child what it is, and talk about their emotions. It's hard to tell a child their parent(or anyone close for that matter) had passed away.

Ugh. That Angelica would have probably been coldblooded about the whole thing and dismissed Chuckie's feelings and says it's just a dumb old bug. Even worse, as evil as she was, she probably would have tried to smash Melville.

I never realized how realistic the Lemonade Stand episode was Though I do love when the babies go on strike and chant ‘We Want Dimes!’

It's interesting and consistent to have Tommy experience PTSD about a bleeding injury in Rugrats and then again just a few years later up until he's 10 in All Grown Up about being under water because he almost drowned.

Tommy also experienced PTSD from being kidnapped. As he cried after Didi showed him a squeaky banana.

I wish they still had shows like this today to educate the next generation of children.

As a kid watching this, I never really understood these lessons, but now I see what they were saying and I understand them. This was my favorite Nicktoon as a kid and now I know why. Now that I have the whole series, I can look at they lessons anytime I want. Rugrats is a classic and will never be forgotten

Growing up with Rugrats is the best way to help someone be a good person. The lessons and very well done ways they addressed topics that, especially nowadays, are extremely important, are one of the best courses to set someone on the right path in life

Rugrats was a big part of my childhood😊Even when I’m 33 now, I’ll cherish the adventures of Tommy, Chuckie, Angelica and the rest of the gang😊

Rugrats is, has been and always will be a heartwarming series!

It's also interesting how, even though Tommy is essentially the lead character, the tougher issues almost always revolved around his friends rather than him.

I watched Rugrats a lot as a little girl- it was one of my favorite shows to watch with my cousins. My dad died when I was very little, and the episode dealing with Chuckie’s mom had a special place in my heart.

These serious issues are one of the reasons why Rugrats (original NOT the reboot) is one of the best cartoons of all time.

This isn't to say anyone is at fault for not liking the reboot, but I think it's by large too overhated by the internet. And I believe it's because that many don't realize it's an alternate continuity reboot. We had gotten very little information prior to the news breaking out that it would find a home on Paramount+. During the course of development, and production, many expected it to be either a soft reboot, or at the very least a continuation. The limited traces of information has left people either confused or angry about the changes made to say, the adults, Susie and Kimi (Which are not what they've made out to be either) in particular. If more people knew ahead of time what type of reboot it was, if the interviews with the showrunners explaining the context of these changes gained more traction, or if people knew that the person running the new show was a writer of the original show (Or that most of the writers working on the new series worked on the original), I think more people would be welcoming towards it. It's a shame, because as far as reboots like this go, it is competently made, and remembers to stay true to the premise, and vision of the original, but modernizes handpicked characters, and aspects tethered to the 90s to make it appeal to a new generation, and the original audience, and actually improves on some characters, making it's existence rational and justifiable. And who's to say the new series won't tackle serious issues? The original didn't take them on until like, Season 2 or Season 3.

The women on Rugrats were definitely a highlight of the series. Betty being my favourite of these characters. It’s a shame Howard isn’t in the new reboot however.

If there's one episode from Rugrats that EVERYBODY knows, it's the episode with Melville. Also, "Angelica's Birthday" tackled the subject of the fear of growing up.

When it comes down to Rugrats. That show is AMAZING. Entertaining and caring. Open minded and understanding. It showed us all that even though we were different, we really weren't. Miss this show.

There’s a reboot on Paramount+ which carries that tradition. If you loved the original, you will love the new series, provided you know it’s an alternate continuity. Most of the original writers are back, too.

I'm surprised how much of this show stuck with me over the years... not just Charlotte's comment about self-esteem, but the episode about Chuckie's mom. Beautifully done

That mother's day episode hits HARD. I lost my mother at a young age. It took a lot of convincing from his friends for Dad to talk about her for the same reasons. He was afraid it would hurt me.

I noticed how cartoons were back then and it was a strong and great way to teach people what is right and what is wrong. We need cartoons like that now!

@@consumeroftoons2119 the reboot of Rugrats got rid of a lot of the spirit of the original series and chose to follow stereotypes. Look at Phil and Lil's mom, she was strong and confident woman that was happily married to Howard and in the reboot they chose to portray her as a Lesbian stereotype because of "reasons". Grandpa Lou was turned into a new age hippie. Didi became a mommy blogger/influencer as opposed to how she originally was a teacher. Let's also not forget that they canned Kimi and Kira despite fan backlash because the creators felt that in the original series and the All Grown Up spinoff, they felt that they made a mistake with the 2 characters.

​@@idkalan00 Most of these reasonings are stretched too thin, but also tap into how premiering at the height of the culture wars, and getting little information about the reboot before it was announced to premiere on Paramount+ have colored people's perceptions. I know there's backlash against forced diversity in recent years, but the writers (And I do know them, so this isn't an assumption) didn't change Betty to be "woke". The consensus between some writers of the show (Who also worked on the original, and some thought this at the time), and even fans (as far back as the 2000s) was that Betty was secretly lesbian, but they just had to hide around it, because in the 90s, society was more conservative, and most LGBT representation of any kind on a kids' show would have gotten the writers into serious trouble. Many Rugrats personnel wanted her to be LGBT in the first place, but wrote her the way she was, to nod at the idea without saying it. I would see why it comes off as the writers following a harmful stereotype, but they're just confirming what some crew members already implied. You have to take into account that some of the people who do work on the reboot are LGBT themselves. If they thought confirming Betty as a lesbian would add to the bigoted stigma of lesbians, they wouldn't have pulled thru with the idea at all. The show never makes any mention to it, beyond Betty making a casual remark about having an ex girlfriend in the first episode. It was more the media that made a stink out of it, than the people who work on the new series. There's a reason they changed the adults: They're starting over. It's supposed to be a reimagining set in the 2020s, so they had to change the parents' personalities, because in the original, their personalities were built around 90s parenting archetypes, and that satire, while funny, would be seen as the show being trapped in the 90s. It would be amusing, but when rebooting shows like this, you have to take into consideration the new generation, as well as the fanbase. It was a good payoff, because you have the familiarity with the series, but enough changes to make it work for both demographics. Kimi and Kira appear later on in the first season, and Kimi appears prominently in the Season 2 trailer, and they've hinted at bringing back Dil. It has to be reiterated that this is not a continuation, where the show resumes from where it takes off, so they're not going to introduce everyone straight away, but gradually.

Acorn nuts and diapey butts is honestly my favourite episode of the whole show. The changing of the seasons and how it set everything up for the Paris movie too was icing on the cake as well.

That nightmare Tommy had kinda freaked me out as a kid. The way the stitches on his leg ripped open and there was a never ending stream of fluff coming out kept me up at night.

I do enjoy these "serious issues" episodes, these are shows I watched growing up and never fully grasped the issues they were tackling until I was older! I would love y'all to do a "Top 10 Time's Hey Arnold Tackled Serious Issues"

I would say the constant relying on the doctor would be one issue brought up. Also, they show Tommy is a premi in the Mother’s Day episode and that Betty breast fed at the start then switched to bottles showing “fed is best”

Even Didi relying on Dr Lipchitz makes sense, as Tommy was a preemie. There would be a lot of uncertainty around making sure she did things right. I seem to remember as time went on she relied less on the doctor which was her confidence growing

Thank you for making this video, and this is why I believe Rugrats still holds up beautifully and proceeds to be popular to this very day. It took on mature subjects, and delineated over them in a beautiful, and honest tone. It’s more than just a show about talking babies, it’s a show about growth and family. I hope the new series, if it ever decides to take on the subject of Chuckie’s mom does it in a way that does service to how the original handled it.

Seriously love this series and its characters, grew up watching this series as a proud '90s kid. And it handling such deep issues and other topics most other series rarely touched upon or didn't even attempt to do, with the upmost respect and grace, not to mention treating the target audience with respect as well, never once looking down on them. Makes such series truly timeless and classic!

I was basically raised as a rugrats kid (even though I was born in the late 2000’s) and before you say “your too young to see rugrats” Dvds and reruns exist

I think it's awesome that kids are still watching and enjoying Rugrats. I hope it continues to be watched and adored for decades later.

Rugrats, Sesame Street, Arthur and even South Park are very similar programmes. While all four are popular cartoons, although South Park is adult themed and they obviously provide entertainment, they also simultaneously provide Aesop's and tackle real life events we must face or accept. For example Kyle and sometimes Stan in the early seasons of South Park break the fourth wall by saying what they learned from the events of said episode. And things like dangers of drugs, saving the environment and cancer are tackled in South Park. Arthur and Sesame Street tackled things like autism and Asperger's.

I turned 6 in 1990 and Rugrats was the first real exposure I got to Jewish holiday traditions. I had no idea how uncommon that was at the time... now I guess people would cry about that being "woke". 🙄

I'm glad to have had a show like this growing up.

I love The Rugrats. Everyone deals with a little bit of serious issues at times. I have a disability and my last job with my supervisor or whoever it was cut my hours because I was getting in an argument with her because I didn’t agree with her about some thing I can’t really exactly remember so she got mad at me and and cut my hours and it pissed me off

... this actually made me tear up ... like wow, I can't believe how long it's been

I miss this show so much. It was a crucial part of my childhood. I'd gladly watch it again as an adult, no shame

I never realized how progressive the show was. Heck, one of my favorite episodes was the one where Chucky and Phil wore dresses.

Wow as a kid I never really thought that deeply about it but I do now. Some of these hit very close to home I suffer from anxiety and PTSD and have survived some major losses throughout my life. I feel lucky to have a best friend like Tommy who allows me to cry on their shoulder and they cry on mine and we depend on each other through the good times and bad.

Sigh... Tommy as Moses is literally too wholesome to process. RAMJELICA! LET MY BABIES GO!

The first movie could've been added to this list as that movie was about what a lot of kids think when a new baby arrives...they think they will be replaced, yes this issue was tackled with Angelica's nightmare but in the movies case it was the main focus until tommy realized that dill needs him just as much as he needs dill...also I can heavily relate to the one that started this list..I feel like everyone in my family would be better off without me..seeing Chucky go through that made me connect with him even more

The Mother's Day episode has always made me breakdown and cry. Really beautifully done for a kid's show.

I always identified with Chuckie the most when I watched that show, maybe it was the common anxiety disorder, but the scenes with him dealing with serious issues always seemed to stick out the most for me even if I didn't have to go through all of the same issues

Obviously I couldn't articulate why he was my favorite at the time, but I remember Kimi being one of my first imaginary friends because I loved the idea of Chuckie finding a new parent and getting a sibling. (Here's a public apology to my mother for blindly making her take me to see Rugrats in Paris in theaters and making her relive that grief 😬)

There’s one, facing fears. One of Tommy’s Toy soldiers went down the drain of the tub and he had a fear of getting sucked down. Didi cannot find out what was going on. But, he later faced the fear and had a great bath.

I always thought that the episode that Chuckie of all the characters was the one that helped tommy get over his fear of sharp things given that he is afraid of nearly everything

I wish people could watch this show again and really pay attention to the episodes of the show.

I would honestly love to see them show 10 Times Foster's Home fir Imaginary Friends Tackled serious issues. Since it is kinda slice of life-ish they may be able to find some.

Someone actually did a video called Times Hey Arnold Got depressingly dark.

This version (2D) of the Rugrats will always, ALWAYS! Be a winner in my book. The reboot can take a hike off of a short pier.

There was another issue this show tackled and that was addiction. In the episode 'No More Cookies', Angelica falls ill from eating too many cookies so she tells the babies to promise her never let her eat any more cookies and throughout the episode, she starts suffering from withdrawal and comes up with ways to find the cookies before the babies intervene. It's interesting that this episode tackled addiction by showing Angelica as a cookie addict much like that of a drug addict. Much like drugs, when it comes to cookies, just say no.

I love how Chuckie is able to help Tommy deal with his stress, despite being insanely cowardly. Dude is a true friend.

it was weird that as a kid I thought this show was bad and weird cause it was babies but somehow always came back to it, because I thought it was for babies is why I didn't really accept it at first, but now a days I understand a lot of things I thought were "cringe" as a kid were just more ahead of what I knew and also generally things I thought I shouldn't have enjoyed or watch, now I don't care and understand that was also kinda the message some of the shows held in certain episodes, that normal things don't need to be your ONLY thing. you can always enjoy something strange so long as it hurts no one. a guy liking the barbie movies? perfectly fine. a girl liking fast and furious? absolutely fine. your still you, no matter what others or the general public say. guys can like girly things and girls can like manly things, adults can enjoy childish things (but most kids can't enjoy adult things with some exceptions like adult shows that have a child friendly version.) without needing to be embarrassed or ashamed they think it's cool. I miss this era and wish it lasted longer so I could have realized it before everybody else revealed I was looking through... I guess vomit tinted glasses? if there's a saying for the opposite of rose-tinted glasses, that's what I'm going for.

Even almost 30yrs later, that episode of Chuckie's mom still hits hard. The way it was presented was just.... perfect.

This is what the reboot lacks.

I'm trying not to give too much away, because of NDAs. But I do know some things about Season 2 of the reboot(The showrunner, Kate Boutilier and I are good friends, and communicate frequently on Instagram). Putting this into better context: The first season of the original didn't really tackle serious issues. Season 2 (of the OG series) is when Rugrats started addressing them, and Season 3 really went in all on them. There's many surprises coming. So, don't rule it out. ;)

I loved this show growing up

I don't remember waching the episode about Chaz talking to Chuckie about his mom that's why when I watched the Rugrats In Paris on the iconic orange video tape (that belonged to my 7 yr old cousin) several years later, I started to wonder but then there was a scene that made me cry.

I heard a good theory regarding the first one in why Chaz is such a mess without Chuckie in that in that world he lost his wife and his son. No wonder he's so messed up.

Clan of the duck is definitely a great episode overall! Especially the Scottish babies who saved chuckie and Phil at the end.

My defence of the reboot is that I think many complaining about the change in direction have a misconception of what the reboot is trying to do. It's not disregarding established material, or even continuing where the original left off, it's a start-over. It's a reimagining set in the modern day. It makes enough changes to where the show feels fresh, and contemporary, but also keeps familiarity and doesn't give the original vision a cold-shoulder. Many of the original writers (Something I don't think many people who complain about the reboot even realize, or know about) are working on it, and they've made sure only to change the conditions tethered to the 90s (Like the parents), and make changes that benefit certain characters (Angelica becoming front and center of the show, and having amplified character development, Susie still being the adversary to Angelica, but having extra layers to her personality, and Kimi, being a Lila Sawyer type, without the unlikability, or perfection, while still being spunky). I think people were expecting a continuation of the original, which is why they're thrown back by the changes made. It's an alternate timeline reboot. As much as I love the original, going this route was logical, because while the original didn't get a proper ending, 9 seasons was enough for the original, and that would require over a decade of catching up for a new generation. It would be seen as more pandering to nostalgia than trying to make a fresh start. This direction is a fine middle ground, because it doesn't stray too far away from made Rugrats what it is, but it makes enough differences that it warrants existing. It's better to see it as a refresh, than more of what came before.

Josh actually came back as a recurring character in the reboot. He definitely looks a little bit different but he’s still the same old bully from new kid in town.

Rachel Lipman, who wrote that episode, is co-producer of the reboot. Which explains why he makes more appearances.

I never noticed this when I was watching this as a kid. Good to know about this now than never.

This show is how I first learned about Kwanzaa, Chanukkah, and Passover. I love how they portrayed all of the differing cultures and holidays with so much love and respect, but also in a way little kids could understand and enjoy.

Chucky was always my favorite. He & his dad have glasses & (until Rugrats in Paris) it was just them. Similar to me & my dad. And he was always the nervous one wanting to stay out of trouble. Also me.

Is it bad that I teared up on #1? It reminded me of my brother and grandpa's passing (I was 15)

The holiday specials of Rugrats were so good I thought. But it definitely took awhile for the Kwanza one to come out. Basically soon after kimi came into the show.

I’d like to see you guys do top 10 times The Loud House, another great Nickelodeon hit, tackled serious issues.

I love when children’s shows tackle real life issues, and do it in a gentle way. Need more shows like this.
