You didn’t mention the OTHER reason Greg Louganis’ ‘88 win was such a big deal. Come to find out in the ‘90’s he was HIV positive at the time. When this came out in the ‘90’s people were mad because he had bled into the water that other divers went in. But the size of the pool & the chlorine meant to risk to the divers. The only actual risk was to the doctor that stitched him up but no one caught it. Greg was also on medication at the time

A torn ACL cost me my shot at the Olympics for the 2016 games in Rio. I know the feeling of seeing your dreams you have worked so hard for evaporate in an instant. It was my 3 time tearing it in 6 years and the second time in less than 6months. I wanted it so bad that I thought I could fight through the pain and I would get better. I wanted to believe the doctor had been wrong when he told me I wasn’t ready to come back after only 3 months of recovery. I couldn’t admit my dream was probably over. I then walked around on it for 4 years without telling a soul. When I finally got it looked at the surgeon (who was a family friend) just shook his head and told me I had caused so much damage it would take years to undo. I had to relearn how to walk basically. That day I walked out of the office with a full brace that went from my mid thy to my mid calf and I wore it everyday for close to four years. The doctor made me do a full year of physical therapy to strengthen the muscles around my knee to prepare for surgery. My insurance was forcing him to repair it rather than replace it. He appealed it twice and they denied it. I’m 2017 he finally did the first surgery with a full understanding it was temporary and he was only buying time to improve my quality of life. He had no doubt it was doing to tear again we just didn’t know when or how I would do it. In December 2019 6 weeks after I got married I went to sit down at a Christmas party with friends and felt the worst pain of my life. I knew exactly what it was the second I felt it. When they did the MRI right after New Years it showed a complete blow out of the ACL, MCL, and all of the ligaments. It was basically a complete catastrophic blow out of the knee and anything that could tear…did. My knee was so compromised from the prior surgeries and walking on it for untreated for so long basically left me with a ticking time bomb for a knee and the slightest shift of movement in just the right place was going to set it off. It took another 3 years from the first appointment after the four years of doing nothing to the final surgery which finally replaced my ACL. My husband calls it my zombie leg. I spent over half my life battling an ACL injury. Since my last surgery I have gotten so much of my life back but it’s still not what it used to be and it will never be 100%. But after having a knee that was functioning at maybe 50% on a good day to close 85%-95% with I’ll take it. I will eventually need a knee replacement once I’m older but because of my age the insurance would not let my doctor do it because i would need to have it redone every 15-20 years. So for now i have a zombie leg and it seems to be functioning very well. Thankfully I haven’t had an cravings for brains but who knows that may come later.

I feel like most of these athletes didn't have a choice but to continue injured from the pressure of either coaches or their country. Kerri Strug had no choice but to vault injured. If Bela Karoli told you to do something then you did it no options. Thats just how gymnastics was even in other countries. If you look upnthe story of Elena Mukhina who was apart of the Soviet Union had a broken leg and her coach made her take her cast off early and push her into performing a Thomas Salto(which is now banned) very dangerous move she told her coaches she was afraid of doing it and two weeks before the Moscow olympics she landed on her chin and snapped her spin.

Kerri Strug should have been pulled out by herself and coaches before her last vault. They still would have won without her vaults counting based on the scoring system then. Her health was and is more important than a gold medal and tv moment

You should have included 2020 Tokyo's Men Long Jump Final. Silver and Bronze went to a pair of Cuban athletes (Echevarría and Masso) who got injured after making their winning jump at the beggining. They had to forfeit the rest of their jumps and pray for no one else to make a better one. And they almost did, but a Greek athlete (Tentoglou) managed to equal Echevarría's mark. He then tried to jump with his injury as he only needed to surpass Tentoglou's 2nd best jump, but failed to complete the jump because of pain, effectively granting Tentoglou the Gold Medal.
