I definitely felt bad for Pepa on having to control her emotions, but it being a vicious cycle of constantly worrying about it and that worrying making things worse.😥 Also, I love that the movie showed characters that are complex and more than just one trait/characteristic.😊(One of the reasons I felt bad for Luisa too since she only thought of herself as strong because that’s all that people needed of her 😞).

And kudos for Mirabel to recognise that in her sister and acknowledges she takes on more than she should. Luisa is sensitive and takes her duties seriously and works hard. You mentioned 2 of Hercules' labors from Greek mythology, but everyone seems to miss a third reference. Luisa is asked to reroute the river right before the guy says that the donkeys got out again. The First Labour of Hercules was to clean the Agean Stables, which were said to house so many horses that it was filthy again before anyone could finish cleaning it. Hercules solved this problem by rerouting a river to wash out the stable.

Yeah. Also I hate that people always says that the references of greek mythology are to the movie of 1997. That Hercules movie wasnt even accurate and only by checking the real mythology people can understand better. The last labor he did was to take out Cerberus out of the underworld so the reference could mean in this like she always feel that she has to do it no matter how hard or dangerous it is. That no one else can so she has to do it. Since the labors for Hercules were so he could be forgiven for killing his sons and wife, they were imposed and were putted by the expectation that he die doing them. With Luisa could just be more like no one actually cared that they were hurting her with all that pressure.

An adult joke I noticed is that in Columbian culture, when someone says it looks like rain to someone on their wedding day, that means you think their going to get divorced. Bruno meant it as a joke, but that's why Peppa got so upset. Another detail I noticed, this one about Camillo, is he genuinely is a nice person, but he doesn't do many things by himself, except for when his parents are around. Like, he only really does work when asked, and then only as someone else, because he's been taught the only thing about himself that is useful is his gift, meaning he's not useful, the people he shapeshifts into are the useful ones. Like, even on their family tree you can only see his head, because he's swishing his yellow cape thing.

As an adult, I was quite pleased with myself for catching a LOT of the Encanto details mentioned here. But not all of them. I caught Peppa's quirks right away. She openly displayed quite a few characteristics of people with chronic anxiety. She strokes her hair over and over. She repeats a mantra ("clear skies, clear skies") whenever she starts stressing out. She gets angry if you bring attention to the manifestation. I know people with severe anxiety disorders and I recognized this right away the first time I saw the movie. But I didn't get it all. For example, when Augustin said "Miércoles." When I heard that I immediately looked it up, so I knew he said Wednesday, but I sure didn't know why. Now I know, thanks to MsMojo (Thanks!), why he said that. It's like when the French say "sacré blu!," which literally translates to "holy blue," which doesn't make any sense. But at one time (and I'm not going to look it up for this comment) one of the French Kings made taking the lord's name in vain a capital offense. So it became illegal to say "sacré dieu," which means "holy god" like you might say in the heat of the moment when you smash your thumb with a hammer or stub your toe. People caught sating it would claim that they were NOT swearing using the name of god but the name of the king's dog, Blue, instead.

The donkeys always get me. They're adorable and so chill and I love their expressions. Lusia just picks them up and throws them around and they're fine with it. Like it's been happening for years. No doubt Lusia has been carrying donkeys around since she was five and received her gift. At the end of surface pressure they even line themselves up on a board so she can throw them up in the air and catch them all at once. At first it's cute and funny. Likely the donkeys are used to being beasts of burden themselves and enjoy someone else carrying them around for awhile. But then you realize that the town sees Lusia as their beast of burden and it gets sad. She's 19 and got her gift at 5. That's 14 years that she's had to do this job and no one has bothered to train the donkeys, train a herding dog, or fix the damn fence. They just figure Lusia will do it. It's sad. I have to pay more attention the next time I watch the movie but I can't recall anyone saying please or thank you to her. Yet someone said to me that what if she was made to have Antonio by Abuela considering Mirabel's gift ceremony went horribly wrong and she didn't want her eldest to have another child in case the next one wouldn't have a gift but had Pepa have another to keep it going on.

I so identified with Luisa, especially Surface Pressure - I've started singing it at karaoke. I've always been the one to help people, I DO NOT get help. Then in 2020 I had to have my foot amputated, and suddenly help is a lot more helpful and necessary, and I am FAR less capable of helping. It's been quite the upheaval. I feel for Luisa, and I just about cry when the song ends and Mirabel just hugs and understands, something I never get in my life. I note that decades ago, the movie would have ended with Mirabel finally earning her gift, one particularly great since she was denied for so long, like she had to earn it first. Today's hypersensitivity means instead we get a message of acceptance (which the main character didn't need to learn, the rest did), a much less satisfying message. Nothing REALLY changed. :) Come ON, she couldn't even get a real room of her own? Even without a glowy door? She's stuck in the nursery she's way too old for? Maybe she could have bonded better with the 3 other unpowered individuals - Abuela and the two husbands (and Abuela even gets a magic door). BTW, I have a theory: I think their powers are related to their personalities. (I forget most names so I'll reference their powers). Kid Dolittle, Mirabel says beforehand he likes animals, I think she gave him a stuffed animal as a comfort thing in case he's denied like she was. His brother Metamorpho - he's SERIOUSLY supposed to be OLDER than Mirabel? I'd swear he was younger, between size and personality - probably had a talent for acting and imitating people/voices. The Listener was probably a terrible gossip, always eavesdropping (which is how Mirabel and her dad KNOW they're in trouble when she hears them). SuperBabe was probably an extra attractive child who developed an interest in flowers as an "appropriately" girly appropriate thing to like. Luisa was probably particularly active. And the original 3, Mirabel's mom was probably particularly caring - like taking care of injured birds and such. Pepa was probably particularly emotional, probably prone to wild emotional swings. And Bruno was probably so perceptive he seemed psychic.

How long does Encanto take place after the sinking of the Titanic? The Titanic sunk in 1912. Encanto took place at some point in the 1950s. (Look at the technology, with the camera and the phonograph player the rats are running on.)

One thing that most people don’t catch is that because Mirabel wasn’t given a gift, she doesn’t actually have a room of her own. She sleeps in the nursery with Antonio until he gets his gift, leaving her to be alone again until the next child is born. She doesn’t even have her own space like everyone else does.

In "Waiting on a Miracle", Mirabel sings that she "will move the mountains" - and she does, with the earthquake that opens up a crack in the mountains isolating the Encanto. She "will make new trees and flowers grow" - and she does, by freeing Isabella from her perfectionism. She will "heal what is broken" - and she does by accepting Abuela's pain. She will "show this family something new" - and she shows them how to accept themselves, and to accept that Mirabel really does have a "special gift". It is great foreshadowing.

The 'bad word' it's filling in for has the same first two syllables, so it's a really obvious evasion for the bilingual.

Oddly I connected most to Camilo for being a jokester but cared for my family and others. The other I connected to was Bruno by being outcasted because I am such a jokester. So I can imagine everyone can connect to one or two of the characters in the movie.

Fun/random fact: if you don’t speak Spanish or read the captions the song that plays at the river is translated to “two caterpillars” (side note it did make me cry 7 times in a row) is saying “Two caterpillars cant hold on longer you must break apart and build your own future” I did forget a bit of the lyrics so uh yeah -_- but I don’t think many people would have noticed this but the scene is meant to show the two characters as the caterpillars and they must break apart to build a future even if it may not include the other and that life will still be fine when the lyrics “miracles are coming” and I’m pretty sure there is a reference to the metaphoric cycle for butterflies so yeah, then in the song it also said that they were “always hungry” which made me think that they had poor living conditions but tried to make the best out of life

Everyone made a big deal about Mirabelle not having a power, but Abuela didn't have one either. I always figured Mirabelle's gift was that she was the family glue. Casita didn't start to crack until Mirabelle started feeling on the outside of the family and was going to strike out on her own. I think she's Abuela's successor.

The details in Disney movies are absolutely amazing. I'm very proud to recognise almost all of the Only-Adult-Notice-Things. Mostly because I'm only 16 years old. The two I didn't knew were: The Football match (cause I was born in 2006, which is long after the match) and the Wednesday / We don't talk about that moment (cause I never learnt Spanish in school: I live in the Netherlands).

Yeah, Miercoles is used in many Latino countries. I'm Puerto Rican and it was used in my house ALL the time with the addition to MANY more like HP; Bronca (repeat it many times in a row and if you speak Spanish you'll get it), no chaves mas, que J, etc... I was dying laughing when it was said and astounded that Disney allowed it!!! Also I started drinking coffee (with A LOT of warm milk) when I was 7 religiously at 2:00pm!

i am not even close to adult age but i noticed something else when luisa was on the titanic, behind her the donkeys were playing string instruments, a reference to the titanic movie where a group of people played string instruments to calm people down. im not sure if this was also a hint that luisa needed to calm down or if it was just a fun little easter egg.

When Bruno saids " Their Love could never be", I also noticed when he said this Bruno: Well, because she’s his aunt and she has amnesia so she can’t remember that she’s his aunt. It’s like a very forbidden kind of .... then Mirabel cuts it off. I kinda had a bit of an off feeling when he said that especially saying this to his Niece after all these years.

The fact that Dolores fate from Bruno in "we don't talk about Bruno" she said the love of her life was betrothed to another. Well, he was. To Isabella. But then in the end they "broke up" and he was free to date Dolores. At least that's what I think.
