You forgot the most important knife in existence that must be immediately moved into the top three. The humble Mora Companion. Not because it is the best, but because everyone has one. After the apocalypse there will be one on every lifeless survivalist you stumble over.

Mora is great. I will tell you tho unless you get something like the Garburg its not survival ready... I used and abused a companion and the rat tang finally gave out after a few years of light to moderate use... a garburg tho 100% should have been on the list, I think the boys love their toys and perhaps forgot in a survival situation they prob wont have a few Japanese wetstones with them lol

Architect manufactures knives almost identical to the GSO (the ARCHITECT FIELD BUDDY 6.5 or AK 6.5) with complete customization of the knife. It seems to me that they go through the same company for their heat treatment and their knives are now available in Magnacut (even if they are out of stock at the moment) and above all, no need to wait 3 years to receive it. On the other hand, I don't know at all if it is as good as the GSO but most of the reviews on the internet are very positive.

I have the architect 6.5 and it's great but grind is less precise, so thicker behind the edge. And the factory edge was fat and uneven albeit sharp. Fit and finish isn't quite gso level. But besides that, pretty much a cheaper GSO, and I absolutely love it

Collected Knife Tips : 1) You can attach orange paracord to your knives and other equipment so it on't get lost easily. 2) You can make a paracord lanyard to use put though the hole in your knife handle so your hand won't slip while chopping. 2) You can avoid beating on your knife (batoning) by using a folding saw and ax or hatchet. You can also fashion wooden wedges to baton instead. Normally, you'll find enough deadfall that is useable for fire making without the need for batoning anyway. 3) You can uses hockey tape or other wrap material on your knife handle to improve your grip. 4) If you choose a big survival knife, you'll still be able to do fine work with it. Anything a small knife can do, a big knife can do but a bushcraft knife should be chosen for appropriate size, blade width, grind and comfort. 5) There is a point of diminishing returns in knife toughness. Often, a knife is rugged enough that it won't break even without the thickest blade or toughest steel made. Weight may matter too. 6) Leather handles may absorb animal blood when used for hunting and can get to smell bad. 7) Before using a knife for food preparation, wash it with dish liquid such as Dawn to remove germs and residual non-food-grade oil. 8) Gloves are often a help in gripping knives, can prevent irritation from the handle and enhance safety especially during sharpening. 9) Accidentally driving your knife into dirt or muddy logs will dull it fast. So will accidental contact with rocks. One way to keep your knife safe and sharp is to always have it either in your hand or in its sheath. 10) The quickest knife to bring into action is a fixed blade knife. If you aren't happy with the sheath, you can buy or make a replacement. 11) A knife maker's reputation can tell you more than a set of specifications. The type of steel used, its thickness and type of grind may be less important that the maker's heat treatment, degree of hardening, quality control, fit and finish. 12) If you don't baton, throw, pry with or otherwise abuse your knife, it may last a lifetime and delight your heirs. 13) There are some inexpensive but good knives such as the Mora, BPS and Beavercraft lines. There are more expensive knives from KaBar, Cold Steel, Tops and Esee that are also well worth the money. Avoid gimmicky, fragile, no-name, novelty and cheaply-made knives ( and anything from China ) . Put your money into quality knives with good sheaths. 14) It is ideal to handle a particular type of knife in person before ordering one online. Ask friends what knives they have for you to examine. 15) Hollow handles that contain survival goodies are to be avoided. Full tang construction is ideal for strength. House survival kis in a pouch on the sheath or, better, in a separate belt pouch. that way, your small kit can hold more items and will be there when you need it. 16) It isn't normally good to use your knife as the tip of a spear but you can lash it to a pole to reach food, game or other things that are otherwise out of reach. 17) If you luck into an "Old Hickory" brand butcher knife, keep it. It can be used as a bushcraft knife either stock or modified. The brand was made by Onterio and is no longer produced. 18) When walking, a knife's lanyard can catch on branches and drag the knife out of the sheath. Consider that before using a lanyard. 20) If you want a defense knife, look at the Cold Steel Drop Forged Wasp, which is reminiscent of the Gerber Mark II. Otherwise, for EDC, get a Colonel Blades Lo Vix fixed blade. 21) Be extremely careful with folders but get a Victorinox Explorer and a Leatherman Wave.

For me a 'survival' knife is indeed the one you have with you or as I call it the 'just in case' knife. It's the knife that you can manage a lot of tasks with but not a dedicated knife to any specific task. It has to be the knife you throw in your day pack on a dayhike or in your backpack on a longer hike or backpacking in far away countries. So I have some criteria like: lightweight, compact, stainless steel, plastic (kydex/zytel) sheath with good retention. I prefer an overmolded handle but nothing leather. So my top 3 are pretty similar exept for price. 1. Fallkniven R2 Scout (Elmax steel). 2. Mora Companion HD in stainless. 3. Mora Basic 546 or Hultafors RFR (both are stainless).

For my top 3: 1. Extrema Ratio Selvan - tough, chops, carves, stainless. Best all-rounder! 2. Autine Leuku - I would not be afraid to baton such a well made knife. I have plenty of Leukus that have gone through plenty of use and abuse that aren't nearly as good as that one. #2 for lesser corrosion resistance 3. Bark River PSK EDC - Small, light, always on you, tough, great edge retention, and near completely stainless. Stainless is important to me who spends alot of time in tropical jungles and in/around the sea! Magnacut is capable of being used as a dive knife even, I'd probably have #3 with a kydex sheath even if I had #1 or 2 already

Have you guys ever got your hands on the American Knife Company Denali? I don't think you can buy it anymore, but you would both LOVE it. It's the best large knife design ever in my opinion with the exception of the steel (A2) because of its balance. It's literally like a Bark River Ultra Lite Bushcrafter (my favorite knife ever) and a Fallkniven A1 Pro in one knife. Happy to send mine over to you to check out if you want, as long as you don't break it and sharpen it for me before you send it back.
