To be extremely successful a high IQ is helpful. However, IQ is only one facet of a high preforming individual. Emotional intelligence, mental toughness, motivation, perseverance, social skills, as well as opportunity all have significant impact on success. I meet many a high IQ scientist type that were social blivits, tunneled in vision and utterly unmotivated. Moreover, being very smart, often you'll find the world and its social trends very disturbing.

I’m originally from Colorado and my hypothesis regarding IQ is that one has to be smarter to survive in a cold climate. In the south you can just lay around and fruit falls out of the trees. In the north one has to plan ahead for shelter, food, clothing etc just to survive the winter.

I suspect that a lot of innovative culture associated with Minnesota originates from WWII. The federal government started by tapping the milling industry to produce food for the war effort.
