To be extremely successful a high IQ is helpful. However, IQ is only one facet of a high preforming individual. Emotional intelligence, mental toughness, motivation, perseverance, social skills, as well as opportunity all have significant impact on success. I meet many a high IQ scientist type that were social blivits, tunneled in vision and utterly unmotivated. Moreover, being very smart, often you'll find the world and its social trends very disturbing.

I’m originally from Colorado and my hypothesis regarding IQ is that one has to be smarter to survive in a cold climate. In the south you can just lay around and fruit falls out of the trees. In the north one has to plan ahead for shelter, food, clothing etc just to survive the winter.

I suspect that a lot of innovative culture associated with Minnesota originates from WWII. The federal government started by tapping the milling industry to produce food for the war effort. Minnesota was safely inland and had access to the Mississippi River and the Great Lakes. Minnesota's role was expanded to include both light and heavy manufacturing for the war effort. After the war, Minnesota continued to host all kinds of research and development.

For the record, I taught civil engineering for 28 years at 2 universities. I’m also a licensed surveyor. I’m not at all smart… I was only persistent …. and I knocked up the College Dean’s daughter. I’m not smart, or have a high IQ. I was just good at doing what I did to get ahead of everybody else. By accident. And I have a PhD in engineering. The whole concept of “you need a high IQ to get into a university” is at best.. a myth. Or a downright ignorant thing to even think about saying. I’ve been married to the Engineering College dean’s daughter for over 40 years. I never had a high IQ my whole life. Terrible benchmark to judge IQ from. I know welders, landscapers and even janitors whom I feel have a higher IQ than I have.

@@carmenburnham1088 That’s funny! Thanks… no, I married the Dean’s daughter because she is so intelligent, elegant, regal and amazingly good looking. EDIT 15 minutes later - now that she isn’t looking over my shoulder anymore. I married her in SPITE of her being the Dean’s (my boss’s) daughter. Not all BECAUSE she was the Dean’s daughter. I love her freckles. She hates them.. so I couldn’t type that on my original reply. We laugh, and understand (forgive) each other for who we are. And she bakes amazing bread……. I’m still not very smart, but I’m still very happy! I consider that a big win for person with enough intelligence (and fortunate) to enjoy the previous 40+ years of my life.

No-one likes to feel stupid every time they turn around, or to feel like they spend their whole day instructing others about things they consider very basic. It's exhausting, actually. For high IQ people, it's like spending your time always surrounded by children. For low IQ people, it feels like you're always looking dumb. It's very uncomfortable for both groups, which is why people don't marry outside their range. People in the middle are probably most comfortable.
