For this list, all contenders have to have been created for the stage production of any musical, and have to have been made famous through that stage production initially.

+AlejandroInTheTux I can't agree with this. Not because i think that phantom's title song fails to bring the house down, it does that and then some, but rather because I can't say which is better: Phantom of the Opera, or Music of the Night. Both are iconic and deserve this list.

I understand why Memory got #1, even if Cats isn’t the best musical, Memory pretty much is one of the most iconic Broadway songs of all time, probably right up there with One Day More, On My Own, Music Of The Night, Seasons Of Love, etc.

There’s a line or two that emphasize hope. “But still I dream he’ll come to me And we will live the years together” She’s hopeful during those lines, but when all is said and done, it’s really a song about how cruel life can be to someone.

Adri Mulet I get what you're saying, I definitely see it. Those plays are really good, (Heathers has a special place in my heart), but the reason these are so popular now is because they are so new. The classics stay the classics, but the new musicals deserve some praise too. It's hard to be original in a world where everything's already been thought of.

I was searching for a comment like yours. Finally someone who doesn't hate on the winner of this list... It's funny how basically everybody else clicks on a Top Ten video expecting his or her favorite song to be number 1. And then everybody gets butthurt and talks bad about "Memory" just because they wanted another song to be no.1... Why even watch the video if you can't respect other opinions, right? I doesn't help anyone to hate in the comment section...

I grew up with Cats, it was one of my first musicals (together with My Fair Lady) and the first I saw in theatre because it was child friendly. It will always have a special place in my heart despite me not being a big Andrew Lloyd Webber fan (I like Sunset Boulevard and Evita from him, Phantom - there I prefer the Yeston/Kopit version)

The Wizard of Oz movie did not use any of the music from the 1902 musical of the same name, which is why "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and other songs from the movie weren't considered. The 2004 movie version of Phantom pretty much is the stage show, only with a few better special effects that can't be done live. The songs are all the same. Probably it was easier for Mojo to get clips of the movies than of recordings of the stage productions for some of them, too. I mean, has anyone ever seen a recorded stage production of Rocky Horror?
