Top 10 Shows Cancelled After 1 Season

My completely biased and subjective list of top ten 1 season shows. Enjoy.
Be sure to list your favorites too as I'm always looking for more great shows to watch and am definitely not up-to-date on TV shows.

Everyone forgot Brisco County Jr. With Bruce Campbell!

Henry S OMG yes! Thank you for saying that, I had totally forgotten about that show until you mentioned it. I watched that show when I was a wee lad and freakin' loved it! Bruce Campbell rocks, and The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. introduced him as an actor to me. Perhaps the show was a bit corny, but as a kid the corniness is not something that you notice. Primarily, my memories of the show are those of adventure and a captivating story. So sad that it lasted only one season... THUMBS UP!!!
Longstreet (ABC, 1971-72) James Franciscus played Mike Longstreet, a New Orleans insurance investigator blinded in an explosion meant to kill him. He goes on with his career, with help from assistant Nikki Bell (Marlyn Mason), colleague Duke Paige (Peter Mark Richman), a German shepherd guide dog named Pax, and (in an occasional role) Bruce Lee as Longstreet's self-defense teacher Li Tsung. Generally well-written and always well-acted, it includes frequent scenes of Longstreet relearning how to do things for himself. I think this might have gotten a second season if NBC hadn't moved the similar "Ironside" against it.
One one-season show I fondly remember and miss is "Space: Above and Beyond," which told the story of U.S. Marines in space fighting against an alien invasion.
If there was ever a show that deserves to be on this list it would be American Gothic. The show was ahead of it's time but would have thrived on HBO or Showtime. Gary Cole was one dark SOB and a stellar cast with acting chops to spare.
Why isn't "Police Squad!" on here? It was the basis for the ZAZ Naked Gun trilogy. It had Leslie Nelson in it!

+Lucius Dark The pre-cursor to the X-Files. Darren McGavin was in a couple of X-File episodes probably as an ode to the Night Stalker. I think the problem with the Night Stalker was that it had a new creature/villain every week without having a bigger "series" story arc to break up the week to week creature feature. So, at some point it would run out of creatures/myths to use.

What about The Jetsons. It was revived over 20 years later, but a lot of people forget that the original show only lasted one season (1962-1963).

Actually it lasted for eight though many parts of the country pulled it before then.
I just stumbled upon this while doing some random youtube surfing. I'm so glad to see Crusoe make your list. I was working for Power Television, the company that produced and distributed Crusoe, doing international sales, and it was a big hit for me/us. It's a shame it didn't get picked up for any more seasons after the first. I think the time slot on NBC was terrible, and it was run in the U.K. all within a short period, rather than letting it build an audience. The production values were outrageously good - the show cost a fortune to make. In any event, nice to see that some people remember it fondly.

The tomorrow people was another reboot, the original might've been a bit cheap in the British 70's style and a bit cheesy but it did run for years. They rebooted that for two seasons in the 90s too before the Americans got their grubby mitts on it.
"Odyssey 5" was a good series that had me sucked in at the pilot. It centered around 5 people who witness the end of the world and are sent 5 years back in time by an alien being in the hopes of stopping it. The acting was good, the premise was original and interesting and I thought it was terrible it only got one season.

Joseph Posavac I once met William Windom, who starred as a fictionalized Thurber in "My World and Welcome To It." Sad how it only got one season, but he showed some fans a photo from a one-man off-Broadway show he made afterwards called "Thurber." I also met Anne Francis at a media convention. She explained why "Honey West" wasn't renewed. Tight-fisted ABC thought it was smarter to import "The Avengers" (John Steed & Mrs. Peel, not the Marvel Superheroes) than renew an original series with so-so ratings!
I loved Planet of the Apes and I didn't think the costumes were rediculous.
the Original " Battlestar Galactica " was a blast and forget that "Galactica 1980" garbage , and "Police Squad" the funniest show ever

both two seasons. "Alias S & J" was successful, but then Pete Duel killed himself during season 2 & the show ended. "TR" & "The Paul Lynde Show" were both ratings disappointments, so ABC thought they could salvage ONE of them by having Lynde replace James Whitmore for "The NEW Temperature's Rising". Didn't work

Flashforward. I was sooo into that show and was very upset it was canceled. Good plot, good script.
Here are a couple. Bridget Loves Bernie: from what I've read online, this was the highest-rated network series ever to be cancelled after one season, mainly because of the hate mail received by CBS. It was a family favorite, though - very funny. An Irish girl marries a Jewish boy, and the comedy ensues. Police Squad!: A Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker production starring Leslie Nielsen; need I say more? It was a travesty that it only lasted six episodes. The show has reached legendary status, and led to the three very popular movies featuring Frank Drebin.

One season in prime time. The reruns went on for years on Saturday mornings, much the same way "The Jetsons" & "Johnny Quest" did (they each lasted just one prime time season as well)
I am surprised a Max Headroom reboot was never done. I know the show had more than one season but it was also ahead of it's time.
Good list. One show you might have missed is "The Immortal" (1970), starring Christopher George. A man with special blood that cures all disease - including old age - is on the run from nefarious billionaire who wants him all to himself. kind of a cross between The Fugitive and the Six Billion Dollar Man. I only saw it because AFN Europe used to run it on occasion. Good show for its time.

Interesting fact:- Jon-Eric Hexum, who played Phineas Bogg on "Voyagers" was part of another one season show "Cover Up", which ended for more tragic reasons. Hexum was playing with a prop gun during filming and accidentally shot himself. The injuries were so bad that he died. They recast his role, but it lasted three more episodes before being axed.
I would like to add Terriers and The Adventures of Brisco County Jr to the list.

Police Squad. 'Nuf said. It came out in 1982, and today, it is still light years ahead of most comedies of today. The opening credits alone are about the funniest minute in the history of television.
Wow, I really enjoyed this. I would watch you on TV and listen on the radio. You are an upcoming star. Did you have a script? It was flawless!
I never even heard of "Awake" until now, but that sounds like an amazing premise. Gotta go try and find it.

Awake is on Netflix.
Good list - in 2009 there was a good sci-fi on ABC - Fast Forward, I think it was called. Cancelled after 1 year and on a cliffhanger! Very frustrating.
Let me guess you got the idea that that pocket watch thing translated every language into english from Doctor Who, didn't you?
'The Flash' from CBS in the early 90s.
Does anyone remember Tim Daly in The Fugitive? it ran for one season from 2000 / 2001 .Tim Daly did justice for David Janson's character.
My pick: Police Squad! After seeing the show when it first aired in 1982, I could not take any TV cop show not named Hill Street Blues seriously ever again. Lasted only six episodes but at least it led to the "Naked Gun" movies.

#1 When Things Were Rotten. Mel Brook's 1st foray into the Robin Hood tales. Should have become the hit that another comedy (Welcome Back Kotter) of that year became.
@TheREALSofaKing0306

It had a great cast: "Get Smart!" alum Dick Gautier & Bernie Koppel, Dick Van Patten, Misty Rowe. I still remember the episode with Harry Morgan as an abbot & Van Patten's Friar Tuck introducing him - "Heyyyy Abbottttt!". There was also a Robin look-a-like episode where Gautier's "twin" character had a heavy beard - Sheriff: "Take it off.... take it ALL off!" & Gautier rips it out to "The Stripper"
You left off "When Things Were Rotten." Funnier than shit.
@alfrediceman9506

Oh yes... that was a fun show
Wow, this was a great idea for a top 10 list. I remember every one of these shows except for Awake. If I were to add one, I guess it would be Something Is Out There, but that would be strictly on the basis of the show's *potential* since the episodes themselves weren't that great (except for the miniseries).
The Trials of O'Brien (CBS, 1965-66), starring Peter Falk and Joanna Barnes and supported by Elaine Stritch and David Burns, was the most sophisticated comedy show to come out of the '60s, bumping the Dick Van Dyke Show down to second most sophisticated. The trouble was, it was not a standard sitcom, but a one-hour character comedy masquerading as courtroom drama. As such, it violated the rule: comedies are either half-hour sitcoms or one-hour comedy variety shows (Carol Burnett), not one-hour fictional series. Another comedy show that broke the rule and died was Fair Exchange (1962-63), a one-hour series about an American family and an English family that exchanged their oldest children -- student exchange sort of thing. It gave her first U.S. exposure to Judy Carne, later the Sock-It-To-Me girl of Laugh-In. Steve Bowell
If I knew Joe Flaherty was in "Freaks and Geeks" (he played the father in this), I would've watched it. Flaherty was great in SCTV in the late 70s and early 80s.

Glen Slater -Don't ya also hate it when the great Eugene Levy is referred to as the "American Pie" dad?? Makes me want to scream!
@glen4338
7 жыл бұрын
Yes, it certainly does! And the same thing when people refer to Steve Martin as "star of the movie "Cheaper By The Dozen" and things like that! i I mostly think of him as the wild and crazy comedian that all us high school kids used to love so much! In my opinion, Martin's great comic talent is wasted in such pedestrian family comedies such as that. Its sad that Levy, who was the most underrated member of the SCTV cast, is remembered for mediocre shows and movies. People who missed out on SCTV missed out on a lot, but luckily many of the old skits and episodes of the show have been posted on You Tube.

That particular Steve Martin stand up act was one of the first comedy albums my older siblings owned. I remember that as I grew up many of the jokes that I was too young to understand on first listen became clear. Like when he has a joke for the baby in the audience. "Two lesbians walk into a bar..." Now I have to explain what a comedy album is.
My #1 didn't even make the list--Square Pegs, only 20 episodes in the '82-'83 season. Great cast and writing.

Odyssey 5, Crusade, Threshold, Space: Above And Beyond, Now And Again, Earth2, Alcatraz, Invasion, Wonderfalls, Caprica, American Gothic, Surface, Dark Skies, and I'd like to give a special mention to two-seasoner that was cancelled way to early as well: Carnivale.
@evanhammerman616

Thunderbear69 Problem with Carnivale was that most people were too impatient for story arcs that spanned tv seasons. I loved it!
👍I remember Fish. Blood and oil looked good but was gone before I could watch it. Hong Kong phooey, glad someone remembers that. Loved the theme song. The Practice? Loved it but was on for many seasons. Remember the final scene with Bobby just sitting there, firm disolved, trying to figure out what to do? Miss those characters. That's My Mama brings back good memories and was a catchy phraise. Hardly any blacks on tv at the time. Opened the doors for black sitcoms IMO. Also do you Remember Room222 with Karen Valentine and Denise Nichols I think?
Excellent list! One show I really got into was Nowhere Man, I think on the old UPN network. It was only on one season. Bruce Greenwood was the lead.
Hi, interesting list - I am from the UK, so most of the shows are unknown to me, but I grew up in the 60s watching Top Cat, and never knew it was a one season show - by the way I think it is deliberately based on the Phil Silvers Show, with TC as Bilko, and the other characters as rough equivalents of the rest of the platoon (particularly Benny the Ball).
Firefly was a quality show. Another Fox show I remember is "The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.", which lasted only one season, IIRC. A sci-fi western (!!) starring Bruce Campbell, how could you not love it?
The Dana Carvey show and that sketch with the dogs : Holy beep, what was he on?!? :)
Here's a couple. 1998 Beau Bridges "Maximum Bob": en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maximum_Bob Darin McGavin's 74-75 Kolchak: The Night Stalker: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kolchak:_The_Night_Stalker
It's funny how I've never heard anyone use Fez's actual name. It's always "Fez, from that 70's show".
I was hoping "Action" (1999) starring Jay Mohr would be on here. It truly deserved another season at least and has an 8.1 rating on IMDB. It had phenomenal writing with a great cast and superstar cameos. It was cancelled because the network execs thought it was too racy for television. However, it's available on DVD. You should really check it out!
@thelastpitboss

"Action" had a lot of inside jokes about the movie industry that went over peoples heads, i think. It was hilarious. I watched the whole series on Hulu plus a few years ago, they might still be streaming it. Jay Mohr also stared in "Mafia", a spoof of "Casino" and the Godfather movies. That was hilarious also.
I definitely agree with your #1 (and also liked many of the others that you listed), but my personal #2 would have to be "The Middleman" that aired for one short season (minus one episode) on ABC Family. A few others that immediately spring to mind are "The Fantastic Journey", "Logan's Run" and "The Invisible Man" (the 1975 one starring David McCallum). They were really cheesy (much like the "Planet of the Apes" series), but lots of fun to watch (when I was a kid anyway). And lastly, in light of the new "Flash" series that's premièring on the CW next month, there's the 90s version of "The Flash", starring John Wesley Shipp as Barry Allen (The Flash). Incidentally, he plays Barry's father in the new series. Oh, and also, did you know that "The Tick" is coming back? and that Patrick Warburton will be reprising his role as The Tick?
Freddy Kruger saying power glove makes it seem like he's talking about the power glove.
There have been SO MANY, just in the last 10 years but, the biggest one that comes to mind was "Journeyman"
I forgot about "Awake"! I was really into that show. You're right, it just worked.
More recently, 2014, a very good show was cancelled called Stalker. it actually was very good and I have no clue why it would be cancelled. Such a shame.

Seriously!? "FireFly" was canceled for more reality shows? Basic cable has that covered with a channel for each genre. I thought the misleadingly named reality tv would be a fad. Not that I imagined it ever going away, but I thought the fact that it seemed to be taking over would pass. We deserve to be headed for extinction.
Very cool list ! :D
It was on ABC, 2009-2010. The plot was that almost everyone on Earth passes out for 2 min 17 secs and has a vision of something in their lives that would 6 months in the future.IMHO it started out very well and then fizzled.
A couple people have mentioned The Dresden Files. I may need to check that out.
Odyssey 5, Space: Above and Beyond, Wonderfalls, Threshold, Alcatraz, Surface, American Gothic (1995), Dark Skies (1996), Now and Again, Harsh Realm. And a special mention to Carnivàle which DID get a second season, but was still cancelled way before its time.
I recently found out that "H.R. Puffenstuff" only went for fourteen epsiodes.
The Green Hornet was a one hit wonder, That should be in the Top Ten of All TIME !
Just as The Flintstones was based on The Honeymooners, Top Cat was based on The Phil Silvers Show (Sgt. Bilko).
Some of my favorites in this category include... Gloria (1982-Sally Struthers' All In The Family spinoff; premiered at the tail end of the Archie Bunker era, and was cancelled about the same time as Archie Bunker's Place) Princesses (1991-featured Twiggy and "The Nanny Named Fran") I'm A Big Girl Now (1980-Diana Canova and Danny Thomas) Finder Of Lost Loves (1984-Tony Franciosa, Deborah Adair, and Anne Jeffreys; I liked this show better before they replaced Richard Kantor with Larry Flash Jenkins) Golden Palace (1992-The Golden Girls minus Bea Arthur) Scorch (1992-featured Ronn Lucas's puppet sidekick from Match Game 90; also starred Rose Marie) City (1990-Valerie Harper's return to TV after being fired from her sitcom back in '87) Going Places (1990-featured Heather Locklear and Staci Keanan who starred in Step By Step that next season) Malibu Country (2012-Reba's sitcom attempt that was overshadowed in ratings by Undercover Boss)
What about the lighting point and Atlantis high
@BrianPicchi This is a great idea and your choices were interesting. I regret the cancellation of Square Pegs about misfit high schoolers and I loved that it starred Sarah Jessica Parker and a variety show What's It All About World?. I hope you make more lists.
My favorite one season show was Starman. It became available on DVD a few years back and I bought it but I prefer to watch it on youtube because the person that posted it also included the commercials.
Firefly!! Great choice!! personally I also miss The Class, Mortal Kombat series (I think it had 1 season too), Birds of Prey and Life on Mars.... also Heroes Reborn (technically Heroes counts as a different show)
Just about every sci-fi put out by Fox.

Alien Nation.
The plot device of having the pocket watch thing translating all languages into english was a good idea. It was used in both versions of the BBC show 'Doctor Who". They explained it by having the Doctors time & space machine, the TARDIS, telepathicly translant all know human & alien languages into english.
Like a lot of the shows on your list (and own many of them on DVD myself). Anyways some other 1 season shows I really enjoyed were The Flash, M.A.N.T.I.S., Robocop: The Series, the very short-lived Nearly Departed, Kolchak: the Night Stalker, Alien Nation, The Prisoner, The Time Tunnel, and Earth 2.

The prisoner and time tunnel? Were they cancelled or did they just complete their run? They both ended, which is 'more than i can say for most.
Correction the Immortal came out for one season in 1970, not 1971. In the pilot he doesn't even know that he is different from anyone else.
I thought "Awake" was one of the most ingenious shows in a long time. The writing and acting was superb! Why would you keep so many reality shows and not renew "Awake?" I believe the ratings were ok to good for a new show. At least give it another year!
The lead from Voyagers, John Eric Hexam, ended up shooting himself in the head with a prop weapon on the set of some soap opera in the 80's. He was only in his early 30's and just starting to get noticed when he died
"Angel" (CBS 1960-61). It was a sitcom about a French girl living in L.A. with her American husband. Jess Oppenheimer of "I Love Lucy" fame was the creator.

"Top Cat" was basically a cartoon version of "The Phil Silvers Show" aka "You'll Never Get Rich".

Sure agree with Top Cat. That was a super well done cartoon series.
"Kaz": Ron Liebman as an ex-con who becomes a lawyer and joins a top firm. The dialogue was terrific. (Asked why he doesn't work his way up from the bottom, he explains that it's so crowded there.)
great list, I have to add Freaky Links. I loved it and was so disappointed when they canceled.
Jon Eric Hexum, who starred in "Voyagers", also starred in another show which lasted one season "Cover Up", as a result of him accidentally shooting himself and later dying in hospital.
Two recent shows that got the axe way too soon were Twisted and Secret Circle. I think both were on ABC Family. I got hooked into both and was so disappointed when they didn't make it. Another Fox show from the '90s that should have been allowed to find its audience was Action, with Jay Moore as a Hollywood producer. Excellent writing on that show.
1600 Penn & My So Called Life - had no idea #6 only lasted one season, it came on alot when I was a kid #1 is always on lists of TV shows cancelled too soon
My #1 "one-season wonder"-how many of you remember this one? TV 101. Three of its young stars went on to greater fame: Stacey Dash ("Clueless"), Alex Desert ("Becker"), and Matthew LeBlanc ("Friends").
LOL! I was soooo ready to start screaming at you until you got to #1. We agree that Firefly should have had many more seasons. Hopefully there will come a day when all involved will also understand that and make another 5-300000000000000000000000 years of shows.!!!!!
