About number 7. It actually happened, granted not that often. There was a law in Japan that forbid drawing a sword in palace or in front of imperial or shogun representatives. There was only one punishment for that and it was death, so he as a bushi (warrior class) was aware of that. In the account of 47 Ronin daimyo (lord) Asano was forced to commit seppuku (specifically type called Inseki. It was seppuku for taking responsibility for ones mistakes) and end his bloodline because he was provoked in drawing his sword.

The 70-year old treaty that Blackthorne referred to is the Treaty of Saragossa (1529) rather than the Treaty of Tordesillas (1494). The 1529 treaty reconfirmed the division of lands between Spain and Portugal as stipulated in the 1494 treaty. The only difference is that the line was moved some degrees further west to fully incorporate Brazil in the Portuguese sphere and to make Spain give up its claim on the Moluccas.

I don't think you can say Blackthorne's and Mariko's is "wrong" since "Shogun" never claimed to be historically accurate. Clavell obviously based his characters on real people but the story itself is fictional. Therefore, it's not "wrong".

There's a couple of mistakes in the series, which I'm really enjoying though. John tells Mariko about his daughter. Later he explains that he had already left before she was born. In 1600 they had no tools to determine the gender of an unborn, so how did he know it was a daughter? No post services back then. Second, there's a lot to do about his ships documents and what he writes about what is basically piracy. Mariko reads them, father Alvito reads them, so we have to believe they were written in Portugees. But there's absolutely no reason why John would write them in Portugees, it would even be unwise to do, in case captured. 100% sure they were written in English,. That means abracadabra for Mariko and all the others that studied them. The guns he is carrying are from a different era, about 100 years later.

Well, in 1600 England wasn’t yet what it became. At that time the smart money would have been on Spain. England observed Spain and Portugal, learned from them, and didn’t repeat their mistakes. It’s an anachronism to project how it will turn out having an effect on the story at that time. While it’s easy for us to point out, in retrospect, how people might have thought and believed one can never forget that they didn’t know how it would end up. How all that happened fills libraries with history books. The Reformation and Counter-Reformation were in full bloom at that time and the conclusion was unknown (some would argue that it’s still not done).

There are no facts! Shogun, James Clavell’s novel on which the 2024 FX series is based, is a work of fiction, albeit loosely based on historical figures and events that took place toward the end of the Sengoku period in Japan. So there’s no such thing as what the series got wrong or right. Reason why the names of the characters in the series are not the names of the actual historical figures, I.e., Yoshii Toranaga is based on Tokugawa Iyeyasu.

And this was said by another senior japanese vassal after the death of Oda: "A black slave is an animal (bestial) and knows nothing, nor is he Japanese, so do not kill him, and place him in the custody at the cathedral of Padre". This is just so stupid. This is a work of fiction using people with names different from real historical figures, so there can't be anything right or wrong regarding history because it is not meant to be history. Also Blackthorne was referring to Treaty of Zaragoza, not Treaty of Tordesillas (the story is set in 1600, and he said 70 years ago, not over 100 years ago when Treaty of Tordesillas was signed).

How is that the narrator can properly pronounce the names of all of the Japanese characters and location names but still manage to butcher Toranaga and Mariiko? Japanese is not a particularly hard language to speak s far as pronunciations go, even without knowledge of how Japanese is pronounced, all you have to do is pay attention to just 1 or 2 episodes of the show to know how the names of these 2 characters are pronounced.

Mariko will die in either the last or second to last episode, she will go to Osaka castle to confront Ishido that will result in him being forced to release all the family members of important daimyo that he is "holding hostage". Ishido will hire ninja to kidnap her and she will commit a form of seppuku to avoid being captured. Fujiko will commit seppuku at the end of her 6 month contract to serve as Blackthorne's consort. Yabu will be ordered by Toranaga to commit seppuku for treason. He's the one who let the ninja enter the secure Toranaga wing of Osaka castle. Omi will be one of those who gives Toranaga the proof to sentence his uncle Yabu. Toranaga will also burn Blackthorne's ship (of course Blackthorne won't realize this will assume it was either the portuguese or the jesuits who hired ninja to do this) to convince the powerful christian daimyo like Kiyama that he is no threat to the church. But this is also a way to save Blackthorne's life as the portuguese and the christian daimyo want Blackthorne dead, so burning the ship will make them think that Blackthorne is neutralized. It's a plan that Mariko and Toranaga conspired together. Ishido used ninja, why shouldn't I? But I hired one man and succeeded. Ishido failed. The first time I saw you, I said "There's no excuse for rebellion" and you said "There's one- if you win". Ah, Anjin-san, I bound you to me then. I agree. Everything's right if you win. Mariko-san, it was your karma to die gloriously and live forever. Anjin-san, my friend, it is your karma to never leave this land. It is mine to be Shogun.

Oh take your white savior bullshit and shove it! It's not a Japanese story. It's a story about a British Sailor who ship wrecked in Japan and then was kept there by the Shogun so he would make ships for the Shogunate. Without Blackthorn there is no story. Until he shows up the Portuguese are lying to the Japanese and trying to take over. The real history of the story happened the same way with William Adams washing up on the shore of Japan and then staying there for years and becoming a very respected man there. What's "white savior" about that?

Do you believe that the Japanese lack the ability to produce historical dramas without the cooperation of whites? Already in Japan, there are too many dramas about their history. This is only one of them for them. I guess if they don't like it, they can opt to watch other dramas. Anyway, I send my gratitude to you for getting angry on our behalf, from a less developed region, Japan.
