When I was a kid I used my dad's CB radio to listen and talk to truckers. I can't believe how many times I told them there was a smokey hiding around the next bend. Smokey for those that haven't heard that term was a cop so truck drivers would warn other truck drivers when the saw one so they would slow down. Alot of truck drivers back then would get fuzzbusters (radar detector) so if a cop was setting a speed trap the fuzzbuster would ping if the truck driver got scanned by a radar gun. Then the driver would tell other truck drivers about the "smokey". Anyways so in my Dad's garage I would randomly warm all truck drivers about a smokey I "saw". I'm pretty sure my 8 yr old voice never fooled anyone but they happily played along and thanked me for the warning. Not a scary radio story but relative to the topic.

Radio enthusiast here. The Gong station was actually an East German numbers station, it didn't originate from the USSR/Russia. For those who don't know, numbers stations are radio stations believed to be utilized by military spies stationed outside of their home countries. These stations consist of broadcasts where automated or live voices read out strings of numbers; assumably these are encoded messages meant for the spies to receive. Some stations even use an "interval signal", a bar of music or signature sound also often used by big commercial shortwave broadcasters such as Radio Romania International, The Voice of America, China Radio International, and others to both serve as a form of station identification and to let listeners know that they will be broadcasting shortly. The gongs station obviously got its name from the interval signal that it used...gongs. (Most numbers stations that are heard by the public are given nicknames based on their interval signals or call signs, one famous example would be the Lincolnshire Poacher and its sister station Cherry Ripe, which both used English folk songs "Lincolnshire Poacher" and "Cherry Ripe" as their interval signals. The Poacher broadcasted out of a Royal Air Force Base in Cyprus and Cherry was traced to Australia. Many people believe these stations belonged to England's version of the CIA, MI6. )I'm certain y'all can find the full recording of one of the station's broadcasts on KZread somewhere. We also know it's German because in the final broadcast that the station ever made, (which can be found on the website Numbers & Oddities, they're dedicated to documenting funky radio broadcasts like these and have a whole catalogue of numbers stations recorded that you can listen to) men can be heard speaking and singing a nursery rhyme in German. I hope this explanation is helpful to anyone interested in numbers stations!

What the presenter totally got wrong is that the gong does not play Russian chanting at all. The clip played was in German and this was the last transmission from the Gong before German reunification. The operators sang a nursery rhyme called "Alle meine Entchen" (all my small ducks) instead of numbers to say goodbye forever. A conspirancy goes like that the message was coded to alert spies. The lyrics "Alle meine Entchen, schwimmen auf dem See (2x), Köpfchen in das Wasser, Schwänzchen in die Höh'" (All my small ducks, swimming on the lake (2x), heads in to the water, tail goes up) mean that all the GDR spies, spying around, go into hiding, get a fake identitiy.

Gongs were not used for this sound, it was a recording of chimes from an old clock. These strange chimes are used a lot in Germany. Door chimes, theatre chimes and even chimes at school.
