Lorne Michaels hates adlibs, but maybe it's possible that some stage hands having a bad day might "accidentally" mess something up. I don't think it's intentional from the writers or actors. Some of them might have been "sabotauge".

  • @cjwrench07

It wouldn’t be a conspiracy. SNL and the old Carol Burnett show are known for it. It’s just supposed to be controlled chaos, as Carol Burnett said in her book. The hosts breaking character is also attempted, because watching say Ryan Gosling break during the Alien Abduction sketch makes him seem more human and down to earth. That in turn will make you more likely to go see one of his movies, and enjoy it, as you feel you can relate to him more.

I am shocked that these two didn’t make the video: Dana Carvey’s fake head wound getting eaten by a dog. Chris Farley’s pants falling down exposing his bare ass. Those deserve to be on the list more than anything that actually is on it.

Nice call. I thought both would be on here too. When that dog starts ripping Dana Carvey's fake head off and Dana is trying to hold it on I almost cry laughing so hard. It's one of those scenes that I know it's coming but I laugh hard every time.

Breaking character was the whole point of the Stefon bits. John Mulaney is on record as intentionally changing the jokes between the dress rehearsal (which was planned all week) and the live show, so Hader was seeing the jokes for the first time. Also, where is Jeffrey's (with Sean Hayes) or The Love-Ahs (a recurring sketch that often went off the rails).

And this is such common knowledge now too, could've done one min of research to find out him breaking was intentional not an accident. The same with the dog court, wasn't a mistake, the whole joke was the wild unruly dogs lol

Can't believe Chris Farley's Motivational Speaker debut didn't make #1. That skit is a classic. No one else on the stage knew what Farley was going to do that night. The reactions of David Spade and Christina Applegate only add to the charm. They were not informed on what to do, other than deliver two lines of dialogue. When Farley smashed the coffee table, David Spade's horrified reaction is genuine. He nearly broke character to help Farley off the floor. The fact that this skit didn't even make this list is a damn shame. Granted, the character breaks weren't intensely obvious, but their were some genuine looks of surprise and attempts to suppress their laughter. It at least deserved an honorable mention.
