Exactly! No artificial gravity (beyond inertia), realistic physics, it's a joy to see the details they include. I know you were being colorful in the vid, but it bugged me when you'd say things "interstellar" or talking about the whole galaxy (minor nitpick).

@@vonfaustien3957 , whilst that is true, it only augments the story, as the show establishes real world physics, lulling you into a false sense of security, only to add the ring builder stuff, defying expectations. And they don't screw it over after the reveal, it's not something that the crew learns about in 5 minutes flat, throughout the series, it stays a (mostly) mysterious force, which adds some new consistent in-universe rules.

I got another reason; Errinwright is such a good opponent to Avasjerala. He was a "villain" that could at some level be understood; IMO, it is easy to dismiss someone like errinwright as a warmonger, but paranoia between nuclear armed super powers is a very real phenomena and he was a very well made personification of that problem. But also, Errinwright was a real force to reckoned with and displayed such good acting skills all the way along.

Remember when Sadavir Errinwright turned super villain at the end of Season 2? Or the fact that he totally vague about his motives to going to war for Mars even with his clear connections to a corporation? Remember when even Chrisjen Avasarala defended corporations? Even that one of them open the Pandora box and created a conflict at the solar system scale? That definitly ground breaking.

I think another reason the Expanse is so good is because of the heavy use of real life physics when it comes to space. Obviously the Epstein drive and the high G juice is a plot device but it is still all based in real physics when it comes to ships traversing the solar system. It is by far the most realistic sci-fi show when it comes to internal ship layout, use of inertia to provide artificial gravity when in flight, the concept of flipping and burning to get where you need to go and a bunch of other really well thought out concepts they included in the show.

  • @frederickweaver2691

Real physics makes The Expanse stand out from the crowd. My first exposure to the show was a clip of the Battle of Thoth Station in Season 2. It was stunned by how epic, tense, and thrilling a fight between two spaceships could be. Another plus is The Expanse doesn't get bog down in the science. It's believable that character in-universe wouldn't offer a dull lecture on how an Epstein Drive creates gravity. The characters view an Epstein Drive as mundane as an internal combustion engine. As a result, The Expanse can focus on compelling stories.

I am actually really surprised this didnt make the list. This is easily one of my favorite things of the show. That scene where youre on the asteroid with the detective and he watches the bird gliding around flapping its wings like a 3rd of the speed you would expect was a really nice touch. Same thing with the flip and burn maneuvers to slow down, and the unconventional ship layouts by scifi standards to take advantage of the acceleration of the engines to great faux gravity. Icing on the cake was the realistic space battles where high speed debris from damaged or destroyed ships is lethal if you are too close

@@frederickweaver2691 Great battles, the only thing that is implausible from a technological PoV (not a physics PoV) is the consistently through-and-through penetrations of projectile weapons. Terminal ballistics is a rather complex field, but suffice to say that even in modern times, there are a variety of different ammunition types for different targets and purposes. You don't want to waste most of your kinetic energy having it blow out through the back of a target, and yet you also don't want to fail to penetrate against harder targets. Against a softer target like the Rocinante, her opponents really ought to be loading something like SAPHEI-T/SD or something.

I only discovered this series last week and finished Season 4 yesterday. This was the biggest surprise to me. I started off interested, then liking it then completely loving it by the end and left wanting more. Hands down this is the best Sci-Fi series I have seen in probably decades. There are a few qualms I have with some of the plot points but they are so completely overshadowed by what I love about it that I don't even find them worth mentioning really. The character development is superb and they don't rely on retelling the same story every season. Every time I think they must have gone as far as they could go with the story, they introduce another path and off we go again. It's so refreshing to see a real Sci-Fi show again. I can't believe it took me so long to find it. This should be on every Sci-Fi lover's watch list.

On of the directors who was new to the show, ask why Eros looked that way, it wasn't right - then someone pointed out that the picture of eros he was looking at was a REAL picture and that Eros was a real place - and that's how it actually looked. Would have loved to learn his reaction. This basic grounding in reality is one of the things that make it great!

My friend and I stumbled across the Expanse when looking for sci-fi shows to watch, not having even heard it existed, sometime during the airing of Season 2, and now both of us have read all of the books. The Expanse, along with Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica, are by far and without question my favourite things ever. For anyone who hasn't read the books, has only watched the show, or just started watching, all I have to say is keep watching, things are going to get wild.

As a die hard Star Trek fan, who also watched Star Wars & Battlestar Galactica, *The Expanse is the best of them all.* It starts off with a lot of world building, which some may find tedious at first, thinking this is bathroom break dialog. Only to realize you need to re-watch those episodes later, after realizing this is a well written show, not filled with fluff, to satisfy subscription quantity episodes.

One of very few TV shows that I have rewatched multiple times. Bearing in mind how young it is that's even more a sign of the sheer quality and depth of it. It genuinely REWARDS rewatching. So much depth as well as utterly awesome characterisation. I love the fact that space actually feels dangerous and that the protomolecule is so alien. We are watching a true classic being made much like the protomolecule making the gate and who knows where it will take us?

The dynamic between them is 10/10 enjoyable in every scene they have together. They both have this super high intensity esp Camina that's really impressive and it translates well to the way they act out the characters. Amos is a close 3rd.

my major complaint with the show is more a quibbling over the fact that the aesthetic was altered in places here and there... mostly because they had to, I know.... The Belters' very obvious physical look was obviously going to have to change (I am assuming that Hollywood isn't busting at the seams with seven and a half feet tall emaciated people to play all the belters floating around...) Dominique Tipper is WAAAAAAAAAY too short to actually be Naomi, but since she acts THE HADES out of the role, I'm not complaining... just an example of how things had to shift. I felt like Holden and Amos were both aged DOWN from how the book described them, but I might not be remembering that just right. A bigger complaint again is the way the book sort of took a, I don't know, bottom to top approach, in showing the plot unfold which helped pace it better than the show pulled off... I think it's just a difference in medium playing out, but it's a major reason I like the book better than the show. Like I said, it's mostly quibbling, and understandable... every person everywhere should watch the show.

American Ben, Superb video. I was first exposed to the show when I saw a clip of the Battle of Thoth Station in Season 2. So, I decided to give The Expanse a shot, but was disappointed by a slow beginning in Season 1. However, by the fourth episode, I saw all the setup paying off and I was hooked. Thanks for the shout out to Nick Taraby, who I never heard of until now. What talent! I'm definitely following this guy's career. You also zero in on how The Expanse uses story to make the audience asks questions instead of being preachy. That's another thing that quickly appealed to me. Finally, the protomolecule is the most brilliant twist on alien tech and first contact with aliens I've even seen. So, welcome to The Expanse, and I look forward to more videos.

One option that most people immediately reject when confronted with interpersonal conflict is to pull out a gun and shoot the other person in the head. There are probably a lot of good reasons to reject that option, especially if you live within the strictures of a law-abiding society. Amos lived outside that society all of his life, and he continues to do so in the violent world of The Expanse where being part of a crew of a nuclear missile-equipped Martian stealth destroyer insulates him from the legal consequences of shooting people in the head. It helps with the "love Amos" ethos that he has not yet shot anybody that didn't need to be killed. We all love instant justice. It is heart-warming in a world where actual justice through the court system is either not obtainable, or something that takes years to play out.

I've seen the expanse seasons a few times. It is the best sci-fi on TV in a long time....

Just binged the first 3 seasons in a week. I'm hooked. Havent been interested in any sci fi shows or movies this much since B5 in the 90's or star wars. My mother enjoys it as well.

me too - only 3 or 4 episodes before I stopped for about two years. And this season got the most wows from me since better call saul or early GoT. It has very likeable characters and kickass action and narrative

It isn't woke and at the same time, have very badass and very well written female character that aren't badass because they are female but because they are really well written and played.

I agree and I would add... inertia. The fact that gravity and changes of direction have serious effects on passengers makes space so much more real, difficult, dangerous and exciting.

I was actually on book 3 when they announced they were filming season 1. They did an excellent job with it but as usual if you like the show you'll love the books. So glad Amazon picked it up after SYFY dropped it.

The Expanse is the most profound sci-fi ever screened. Aside from the realism portrayed in space scenes, the actors all seem like real people, with real emotions and motives.
