Yeah maybe the style came first but the music followed. Most of these songs are pop/neo- punk. I think most ppl may think late 70s to 90 when they see the word punk. Well anyone my age lol. Maybe the younger ones see it differently. When I see punk I think of crass, gbh, subhumans, the exploited, the germs, black flag, flux of pink indians, etc

Mate, thanks for including the Sex Pistols, they came up with loads of good riffs on just the one album. It's the first album I bought when it came out, it was 1977, I was growing up in the U.K. and I was 12. It blew my head clean off, I'm still recovering from the chaos it caused in my teenage years, but I wouldn't change a thing. That opening chord sequence with a phaser really makes a statement that is the definition of punk.

Dut Nut it's pop PUNK, unlike your analogy with Kansas and metal, Kansas is art rock and prog rock and has few stylistic similarities with metal, with pop punk and punk, yes there are plenty of differences between the two, but they are still connected by punk, they share a lot similarities because pop punk, believe it or not, is a sub-genre of punk

but this video isn't called "10 pop punk or punk subgenre riffs" does it? it has punk rock in the title and when punk rock is mentioned I'm sure people are looking for actual punk rock riffs. also even though "punk" is in pop punk it still goes against everything the scene was about (not including the scene the sex pistols "started" because the pistols were fucked from the start).

Jesse B Are you kidding me? Bad Brains are one of, if not the most beloved and well known Hardcore band. You probably wouldn’t know about them otherwise, I certainly wouldn’t. They are mainstream, not that it really matters.

First wave punk is interesting, in some ways the least punk while also being the most punk because they were the first bands in a genre defined by doing what you want, so the music was really varied. There werent really any predecessors of punk so these bands just made what they thought was punk and didnt care what others thought, listen to The Rezillos, X Ray spex, Crass, Magazine. Listen to the Buzzcocks spiral scratch, considered the first DIY release ever.
