Top 10 Poorest Counties in the US. (Poverty=Cheap Real Estate)
Do you know what the Poorest counties are in the United States? I have gotten a lot of requests about county videos. I talk about states, cities, and towns, but never counties. So, here we are. This video is just the counties with the highest median household income according to the latest American Community Survey from the U.S. Census Bureau as of June 2022.
Right now in 2022, the nation's median household income is right about $65,000. The median household income in the counties on this list is about half that.
When you get numbers like that you know a percentage of that county is hunting squirrel for dinner 3 nights a week.
So, today's video is a county you should move to if you are barely making it by and you enjoy a squirrel
Get it?
Got it?
Good.
Let’s take a look.

Maybe its my red kneck showing but some of those houses in Kentucky look pretty good. After living in the DC area in clusters and apartments and the only affordable homes are in the Blue ridge, that style of living looks good. In major cities, a six figure income gets you an efficiency apartment.

What some may consider poverty, could be blissfully happy and peaceful for these folks. Living in a high dollar house, making high dollar payments, and so strapped you can't put a picture on your wall, is not happiness. A lot of these folks have e everything paid for, eat well, and do not do without. You don't need a 7 dollar cup of coffee to feel wealthy.

I'd agree with you if you know how to be self-sufficient. These look like great places to have a little farm or homestead. They'd be great if you had a job you worked online. The only issue is, in poor counties, there's no tax money for the communities. You don't get your roads fixed, or a stoplight where you need one. You don't get schools with computers. You don't have hospitals, colleges, or airports. You don't get maintained parks or libraries. You might have trouble attracting good doctors to the area. You don't have high speed internet. Your fire and police are likely inadequate to handle anything big. If you can get state or federal government to cover some of the infrastructure, these places have a lot of potential. You just have to adjust your needs and your thinking.

You're forgetting an entire range of existence that's above dirt poor and illiterate. Most people don't care about "high dollar payments" and are just wanting more than minimal existence and survival. That's not hard to achieve. I doubt too many in dirt poor abject poverty are blissfully happy that way, mythology aside.

Not surprised KY is represented here. I expected to see Bath County, and a few others that may not be bottom 10, but pretty poor. You drive through much of eastern KY, and you wonder, just what is their economy? Because you see houses of various kinds, but very little farming, mining, very few stores, seemingly no other commercial buildings, so you surmise the leading source of income must be welfare checks. By all rights that's one part of the country that should have pushed hard for legal cannabis, but too many reactionary politicians and hucksters have sabotaged prosperity. And this isn't a hindsight assessment. I was saying this 25 years ago.

"poverty = cheap real estate" is ridiculous and pretty insensitive to the housing issues in the US right now. first, we dont need to be tipping off rich people on places to go buy more real estate so they can rent it back to poorer people for even more. secondly, the solution for not having proper housing in the first place shouldn't be to have people moving to poor counties. like wtf.

There is a lot of poverty and ignorance, but there are also educated, hardworking people who take pride in their possessions. These are the kindest, friendliest people I have ever met. PS: Yes, Taliaferro County is actually pronounced to rhyme with "Oliver". It was named after Benjamin Taliaferro, a scion of an Anglo-Italian family whose name pronunciation was altered by the same trend in English pronunciation which turned, for instance, Wymondham into Windham ("Windum"), Cholmondeley into Chumley, and Belvoir into Beaver, among many, many others. I'm not from the area and don't know anyone from there, but I've had a longtime interest in geography and language and I've learned some local pronunciations over the years (such as "Cayro" for Cairo, Illinois, among others). There is poverty here but also lots of old money. I’m originally from New Mexico and the poverty is very visible there, especially out in the country. In Alabama there is also visible poverty but also a lot of nice properties and nice big houses, Alabama looks a lot nicer than New Mexico does. Before I moved here I pictured a backwoods trailer trash don’t get caught in the country kinda town but I’ve spent a lot of time driving around the countryside here and it’s very nice, gorgeous properties and lots of land. A lot of it is clean and taken care of.

"Mobile homes" have evolved big time. They're more often called manufacturered homes now, but they aren't the little tin cans or cardboard boxes they used to be. Some legit look like a "real" house on the inside these days. I've seen some that legit look nicer than the highly overvalued houses built in the 50s that look outdated as hell but sell for like $500,000 because houses go up in value even if they are a dump.

I am from McCreary County, Kentucky..home to the big south fork, Cumberland Falls and also one of the poorest counties in the nation. Alcohol has only become legal to buy and sell.within the last few years, so no big restaurants wanted to come to our town and that is just one small part that has held my hometown in poverty. Lack of opportunity and jobs, teen pregnancy and a high rate of addiction has also played a part. Very sad. I saw myself moving back home to retire up until recently..now, not so sure.

Even in the poorest counties my income is seriously below the median. I have social security at $15,152 per year. I’m 73 and physically unable to work. I live in Dyer County, Tennessee and even my paltry income is too high to qualify for Tenncare (Medicaid) and SNAP is only $20 per month. I don’t even own a car.Where can I live comfortably, not extravagantly, with this limited income?

@@ArdillaINC yes. I pay $495 plus utilities. I have a bed that I bought from a thrift store. A kitchen table with two chairs held together with bungee cords, a couch that my landlord found for me and a nice recliner/rocker give to me by a former neighbor. I have enough but I would like to have a washer and dryer. I’ve tried to sell a guitar and mandolin for a year so I could either pick up a cheap car or move back to Alaska. No buyers.

You know honestly nothing in this video looks anywhere near as bad as lots of much more expensive places in LA like downtown, any place near a freeway underpass onramp or exit, Venice, Hollywood,... Where are the homeless encampments? Where is the graffiti? Not to mention the sales tax, the property tax, etc.

I think these 'poor' counties might be a better place to live if you are poor. The average income might be higher in Los Angeles, California, but what good does that do you if you are poor? With low home prices, these rural people need not be homeless.
