Having some relatives there I have seen it change through the years. It is beautiful, but flights are prone to cancellations due to the harsh winds and ocean currents. There is a small hurdle to flying there as well, unless you live in Iceland, Norway, Scotland, or Denmark. A lot of the hikes now require payment, the cheapest (and only one I know of) being $10, others are $30, and some requiring mandatory guides, which can range from $80 to $400. I hear legislation is working towards increasing prices through establishing mandatory guide requirements for a few specific trails. Trails can get extremely muddy so you need to be ok with possible mud running up into your pants or your shoes. Lastly, like Iceland and other Scandinavian countries they're not really known for food, besides seafood and lamb. Some notables for traditional Faroese cuisine are Whale blubber, whale meat, and dried fish and lamb. You can expect to pay around $25 for a burger. There was a Michelin place but they relocated several years ago, and they are now in Greenland. Traditional fare is more expensive and mostly accessible only through group settings where you pay for a family to cook for you. Overall it is still beautiful but I would not make a specific journey only to come here. The exceptions being you already live in the 4 countries with flights here, or you will be able to have enough time to spend 5+ days here accounting for weather/how much of their nature you want to see at a reasonable pace.

Thank you very much for your clear insight. This place is certainly not suited for mass tourism and "check the box" tourists. Everybody who wishes to see this beautiful part of the world should think it properly through and visit it at a reasonable pace (as you wrote). ✌
