I fell in love with Navy movies ever since I left the Navy (CVN71) I seen them all except the cruel sea. I agree that Das Boot was number one.

An absolutely essential film nobody ever talks about ever. “Harms way” is probably one of the greatest navy films I’ve ever seen in my life. The director was a total ship nerd. There are all kinds of great shots of ships of all kinds big to small. It was filmed shortly postwar and as such all of the ships look amazing. Check it out.

@@etvconnect I would agree with Lew. Adm. Bull Halsey is a figure worth watching in naval warfare. Not a lot of shoot-'em-up, but a very gut wrenching, quasi-documentary in many ways.

How did you forget MIDWAY ? Probably the most decisive battle of the Pacific Campaign in WW ll. Harms Way and U571 are a couple of others that should have made this list. Original MIDWAY. And other folks here are right about Sink The Bismarck. Should have been included for sure.

There are many REAL historic events which would make good movies or we can't see because this list is mostly anglo biased. Where are the movies from other countries and their history .Here are a few to include 1)The Battle of the Leyte Gulf , where a little fleet of 7 small destroyers + 6 escort carriers face a huge powerful Japanese fleet. 2) a better movie about the Bismark , 3)Napoleans navy and England , 4) the Battle of Jutland ,5)Battle Tsushima, 6) Spain +England, battles of the Armadas, there were three , 7) CSS Shenandoah last ship to stop fighting, 6 months after the civil war

There are a lot of great movies that could have been on this list. Crimson Tide is one I felt was too contrived to be a top 10. Still good but not top ten great. How do you figure which is number 10 through 2. Consider Das Boot as a no brainer for number one. I would replace Crimson Tide with one of the followinga: Task Force, Action In The North Atlantic or The Gallant Hours. Oh, the movie Battleship is definitely not on my list of top ten naval war movies.

Cannot disagree with number 1 which does the best job of showing war but cruel sea should be a lot higher that film made you think of cruelty of war where he kills the survivors whilst hunting the u boat but all boats away was far better than crimson tide and there are lots of pacific based Hollywood movies that where better than the films you listed

When ranking these movies, I don't only look at what critics have to say, but also what the audience likes. Furthermore, general popularity of each movie may also impact the ranking position in this list. And not to forget, my own preference may also be playing a part.. That being said, making a top 10 list that everybody likes is impossible ;-)

"Tora tora tora" higher!! WAY higher! "Master and Commander" higher!! MUCH higher! How did "Crimson Tide" and "Red October" make the list? Both are star vehicles; the plots are crap. "The Caine Mutiny" is also a star vehicle, but the power of Herman Wouk's story lifts it above the stars. Audiences still had WWII fresh in their memories -- when the necessities of war saw the promotion of many flawed men to command positions they were unfit to fill: men suffered, men died. "The Enemy Below" sentimentalizes war. The Battle of the North Atlantic was a lot of things, but sentimental it wern't. Down several notches.
