This list is too biased towards older films. Sure they did a great job at the time, but modern films like The Usual Suspects, Memento, Se7en and Zodiac ( and pretty much any other murder mystery film by David Fincher ) have all perfected the Murder Mystery genre.

I love Alfred Hitchcock movies! He didn't have to use blood, guts, & gore. His movies were all about the suspense & left more to the viewers imagination which was part of what made them great. Vertigo was his best, but my favorite Hitchcock movie was Rear Window with Jimmy Stewart & Grace Kelly because of the attraction between the two. They were both awesome actors!
"Dial M for Murder" has got be one of Hitchcocks masterpiece. Not mentioned on your list?
I instantly thought of Clue. I love the movie and game. Whenever I play I'm always Miss White and the killer is always Miss Scarlett. It's weird.

You are absolutely Right
this is your best list yet. looks like you did more research into the past. you have all my favorites in there, except for "Prisoners". my personal favorite is "The third man", because of the camera, music and Welles, especially his entrance. second favorite is "M", because of the camera, Lorre, the music he whistles and the portrayal of mass hysteria. I also have "Zodiac" in my top ten, because it is "edge of the seat'' all the movies you mentioned in this top ten are in my list for favorite 100 movies of all time (though none in the top 20, "The third man" is at 21.) and I own all of them. so kudos to mojo for a really good list.
So glad to see 'M' and 'The Maltese Falcon' on this list! I would also recommend 'And Then There Were None' (1945) as another great whodunit.
I can't believe you only did this now. That was the list I did not know I was waiting for for so long.
Clue is one of my favorite movies!!!!! I only wish they had filmed all the endings that they originally had planned not just the three.

Memories of a Murder should be on this list its fucking amazing. its so well made you are just left questioning the ending long after its over.
Just in case you need another top 10 murder mystery films, here's some more of my favorites: 1. And Then There Were None (1945 & 2016 mini-series) 2. Death On The Nile (1978) 3. Evil Under The Sun (1981) 4. The Last Of Sheila (1975) 5. Laura (1944) 6. Green For Danger (1947) 7. The Thin Man (1935) 8. After The Thin Man (1936) 9. Murder, My Sweet (1944) 10. Identity (2003)
Se7en and Mystic River deserves more then just honorable mentions.
Wow, good choices, Mojo! I would have liked Charade as an honorable mention, but I liked this list!
It's great to see Clue on this list.

Glad to see a list that acknowledges movies made before the 1990s/1980s. Kind of rare for WatchMojo or MsMojo.
How about Witness for the Prosecution and And Then There Were None on which Clue is bassed.
@danieloneill2726
4 жыл бұрын
Clue and And Then There Were None have nothing in common. ATTWN is based on the best selling book by Agatha Christie, while Clue or Cluedo as it is also known, is based on the board game.
Damn, this list contains some of the best movies ever made. Memento is probably my personal favourite. LA Confidential and The Usual Suspects are also pure brilliance, and the older films on this list are true classics, albeit a bit before my time. That said, I don't think The Usual Suspects quite counts as a murder mystery. It's more of a heist film. Also, contrary to many of the comments below, I personally am glad Seven was no higher than an honourable mention. It's a good film, but it's becoming more overrated by the day, it seems.
What about "Murder by Death"?

For anyone who likes this genre, I can highly recommend "The Invisible Guest", a Spanish film from 2016 by Oriol Paulo. It currently holds 8.0 at IMdB but is relatively unknown to the public probably because it is in Spanish language. - Oh, and thank for ranking "M" high up the list.

I'm all about Memento but you're a little fuzzy with its inclusion on this list. Yes, it's about Lenny's investigation of his wife's murder but no, it's not hardly covered in the flashbacks. Meanwhile, there's an onscreen slaying at the beginning and end (so largely even if you watch on forward mode) which are more focal to the plot.

"Vertigo" and "In the Heat of the Night" should've been #1 and #2, respectively. The former is considered one of the best movies of all time. And the latter won the "Oscar" for Best Picture. "M" should've been #3, and "The Third Man" #4.
One great murder mystery/comedy was Haunted Honeymoon with Gene Wilder, Gilda Radner, and Dom Deluise. I Loved that movie growing up, now I want to watch it again.
They must have noticed making this video that when discussing No.6 Murder on the Orient Express, the narrator says Ratchett must find the murderer when Ratchett has just been killed. He meant Poirot I think. It is a good job the narrator wasn't the detective or nobody would get caught!
How did Clue make the list above any of the honorable mentions?
The disqualification section of the narrator's intro made me think "Clue" would not be part of the list. Yippie! The movie has been included! It is the rare mystery story that is continuously entertaining during repeat viewings, despite knowing who is guilty.
