Whole heartedly disagree about The Fourth Kind, that movie put me to sleep in the movie theatre. Plus Mila Jovovich isn't very entertaining.
The Ring scared the crap out of me when I was about 13 years old. Never watched another horror film until I was 31 and my co-workers forced me to watch a bunch of horror films including Sinister and Hereditary which desensitized me into a big horror fan.

my Top 10 1 Zodiac 2 The Strangers 3 Exorcist III 4 The Exorcist(1973) 5 28 Days Later 6 The Ring(2002) 7 Contagion 8 Invasion of The Body Snatchers 9 Sinister 10 Misery(1990)
Absolutely agree with The Fourth Kind. Even I thought it was real footage shown. The last 15 minutes of the film were terrifying audibly. It still haunts me especially at night time. Other recommended horror films that genuinely terrified me as a child were Jeepers Creepers 1 & 2, 30 Days of Night, Insidious, and The Conjuring. The Conjuring especially is one of my favorite modern horror films of the 2010s. The haunted house feel to it was quiet dreadful.

@@JeffRauseo Update - I just bought the Fourth Kind blu ray from ebay. Excited to rewatch it!!
Paranormal Activity freaked me out. The Witch was great. Agree with you on Hereditary.
Now THIS is what I've been trying to find for years. I will definitely reference this list the next time I'm in the mood for a horror film.
Threads is very hard to watch, especially towards the end. It shows society collapsing in the aftermath, leaving people back in the dark ages. Terrifying.
Along with The Fourth Kind, I also enjoyed the movie Dark Skies. They don’t make enough “grounded” home invasion style alien movies.
Love the changes to the channel and the fact we're getting more content. You should make a video of your favorite comedy movies that you keep going back to for a laugh. Also the original Halloween movie is terrifying. Mainly because of the music
Glad to hear that Lake Mungo shout-out, Jeff. I found that to be a really unsettling movie.
I feel like I’ve been a horror fan ever since, I could walk. Here are some of my favorite horror movies. The Shining, Jaws, Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (1978), Poltergeist, Ravenous (1999), The Haunted (tv movie), Eden Lake, The Strangers, Ils, Martyrs, It Followes, Aterrados, Talk To Me, Hereditary, It Follows, The Chainsaw Massacre (2003), Evil Dead (2013), Exorcism Of Emily Rose, Deliver Us From Evil, Asylum Blackout, The Amityville Horror, TheDescent, and so many more 😊
Poughkeepsie tapes! No spoilers for those who haven’t seen it but the final interview is horrifying. It played on my mind for a long time
Nice, 4 new horror added to my queue. Thx Jeff!! Love this new take on recommends vs reviews! This new format rocks great idea my man!!!
So glad to see "The Dark & The Wicked" on here. More people need to see it as I feel it's an overlooked gem. A bit of a slow burn movie, but worth it if you're patient and paying attention.
Love coming here and seeing your content. I've seen the majority of what you've mentioned in this video, but I always find something I haven't seen yet and I add it to my list. I'll be watching The Descent. I haven't seen that yet and it's streaming on Hulu it looks like.
Not really the “scariest”, but my favorite horror movie is jacobs ladder

I watched that movie when I was younger and it scared the crap outta me. I watched it again fairly recently because even though it scared me, I still really enjoyed the movie and sometimes when you watch something scary when you are younger, it might not be that scary when your older. Not in this case, some scenes were still terrifying to me. One scene for me that was always burned in my brain was when he is almost hit by a car and watches it drive away and you can see a figure through the back window of the car. Straight terrifying, lol. But I do love the movie. Great choice!

Glad to see Threads on the list! Love that film but it still scares the shit out of me! They made us watch it in Highschool which I still can’t believe!
Contagion is terrifying and brilliant
I’m not a huge horror fan, but loved this video. Also enjoyed the format hearing your personal feelings on these movies. Looking forward to more.

Good list and I’m glad you mentioned Lake Mungo! I’d love to see a “10 horror films you felt most let down by” list. Can we talk about Antlers? Oof. 🤦🏻♂️
Love this but the Descent is definitely one of the best horror movies of all time as far as scaring you. Claustrophobia definitely plays a part but that is definitely not the scariest parts of this movie. One of the best jump scare movies. Everything in pitch black, can’t see your surroundings, while you are being hunting, with no escape. The best and saw this when it first came out before it blew up. So happy that movie got to the place it should be at the top
One movie for me that scared me was Lake Mungo. The scene near the end genuinely terrified me, I got chills and audibly gasped, lol. It really stuck with me for a long while after watching. Great movie!
The Killer wearing that plague mask in Poughkeepsie Tapes always freaks me out
Lights out was so good. Me and my daughter watched it bc you recommended it. She slept with the lights on that night. lol. Great channel! You popped up on my instagram feed. Me and my daughter love horror movies and you have some awesome recommendations. So glad we found you!
Whatever one thinks of the end, “High Tension” had me squirming in my seat through every frame. V/H/S is pretty damn scary as well. There’s a segment called “Second Honeymoon” (directed by Ti West) that is pure nightmare fuel. It’s the only horror movie where half way through it I turned it off and said, “Nope, I’m good…”. Perhaps some day I’ll watch it. It will definitely have to be on a bright, sunshiny day with the lights on and all the windows open.
Great list. I would say the movie Gattaca was far more indicative of my pandemic experience than Contagion was, but that is a movie discussion for another day.
The changeling is it still my favorite scary movie period to this day it still gives me chills
The omen to this day is the scariest movie I've ever seen. I've seen the exorcist numberous times and while I respect it, it never scared me as much as the omen did. Other movies that definitely terrified me are, the fourth kind, the first strangers, the decent, and pet semetary
@user-xi4dr7jp2q

Agree. I could not fall asleep after watching The Omen in my teens.
For me the only movies that really scared and stuck with me were Fire in the sky and Jacob’s Ladder.
The Strangers is one that also stack with me. The knocks on the door and where and how they did that sound truly frightened me.
I watched the poughkeepsie tapes on a flight back home. I was amazed as to how good the movie was. On the other hand, the people sitting around me were terrified, and they actually believed it a documentary. Probably thought i was the killer 😅
I highly recommend the French horror film THEM which is a fantastic home invasion thriller with atmosphere. It focuses on the audio design as the bad guys communicate in scary noises. The reveal of the intruders is scary as well and the whole film is a great ride.
The Exorcist is still more terrifying to me than Hereditary.
As a teenager the original Xtro freaked me out and gave me a lifelong fear of clowns. Just left me with so much disturbing imagery burned into my brain.
Great video and great pick off scary movies need more ❤❤❤❤🎉😊
'28 Days Later' freaked me out - and I've seen more than my share of Zombie films...
Baskin is something else, man. That movie stuck with me for a while.
Hey Jeff, in terms of the “home invasion” movie genre I think it’s hard to beat “Funny Games”.

I’m glad you liked it! I’ll be doing a lot more like this
You’re right I could never looks at owls the same after the fourth kind
Threads did indeed scare the crap out of me. Nuclear annihilation is my irrational deep fear. I'm glad I was not in Hawaii back when they got that false nuclear attack alert. Contagion was also really good. I laughed when you mentioned being afraid of a dark corner after watching Hereditary. But that also reminded me of a scene in 'A Dark Song'. Not super scary IMO but still worth checking out if you have not already.
As an old bloke (50+) and life long horror fan I rarely get scared now like I used to back in the 80’s (The Exorcist, Evil Dead , The Burning, Last House on the left ) . These days gore is just not scary and it’s more the jump scares. I do like the Insidious and Conjouring movies , they have jumps and eerie foreboding. The Evil Dead 1st remake also was shocking . Things like The Babadook and Mama and Sinister get close to that creeping fear feeling . I’ll look up the ones you mention that I haven’t seen - Baskin and two others. Great video.
Very good list. I would have added paranormal activity, the exorcist, bone lady, conjuring, and insidious. Hereditary and sinister my top 5 for sure
If you are claustrophobic, the movie buried with ryan Reynolds is absolutely terrifying
lol I haven't seen Sinister, but I remember first seeing the trailer years ago and thinking to myself "Oh, this is Slipknot the movie"!
I like your list. I would put The Day After for my nuclear war movie. Martyrs scared me just because its ending was crazy. Hell House LLC was one of my favorite low budget films. Amityville 2 The Possession scared the crap out of me when i was younger.
My brother took me to see the fourth kind in theater. Easily the most scared I’ve been while watching a movie.
It was the woman being interviewed that scared me so bad in Fourth Kind, she looked uncanny but reminded me of my _almost_ catatonic depressive episodes. I also thought it was a documentary and made my friend turn it off. Ugh.
Lake Mungo scared the hell out of me especially in that one scene towards the end
Just wanted to point out in the Strangers they absolutely haven’t lost their minds, they completely and logically know what they are doing. And that is much worse. Being actually insane is much rarer than most would imagine.
If you liked, "The Dark and the Wicked" You need to see "Relic". It is in a similar vein about taking care of a parent who is changing into someone else because of demetia. The horror is to be taken as allegorical but it is deeply troubling and heartbreaking.
@JeffRauseo

I just bought that the other day!
Great list
Really good list. For me some of the scariest were Shutter (the original), Martyrs (the original), Hereditary, The Descent, Ju-On the grudge, Insidious 1 and Come and See (for me it is definitely a horror movie, it’s even scarier because you know these things happened).
I still don't understand the love for "Hereditary." I was so underwhelmed by the movie. To me, the scariest movie I have seen was the 2003 remake of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre." I saw it in the theaters and was so on edge for the entire movie. My heart was racing when I left the theater and it took me almost thirty minutes or more to calm down.
I'm Irish, and I noticed the American love of slasher, home invasion horror movies. The fear of not trusting fellow humans is very cultural and maybe generational. The Irish love to put a candle in the window, so people know they are home, and helps friends, family, strangers in need, find there way home. I get very scared by things you cant see. A good film score can get my hair standing on the back of my neck.
As almost 50 year old Ive seen a lot, and agree with the 4th kind and strangers. However the recent movie that did it for me was the possessor.
"The Decent" looks like a Good Film with a descent Story & has great reviews. Just a Heads up...... The UK version is "uncut as Standard" but US version is not unless it's a special edition which includes both theatrical & uncut. (Obviously your link is the uncut version which is great 👌but just thought i would include other versions so no one gets caught out when purchasing it on sale somewhere else) Im purchasing my copy shortly. Cheers for the Great Recommendations 👌🍻📽🎞🥤🍿
Ffs I genuinely thought Baskin was based off carol Baskin from tiger king, that's why I've given it a swerve until now!
Hostile really creeped me out due to the plausibility factor.
When I was a kid the first movie that creeped me out was Curse of the Demon (1957) then I saw Alien and Halloween. The Howling scared me too. The first Scream movie got my heart going too. Current movies that scared me the only 1 I can really think of is Smile.
@JeffRauseo

I don’t know Curse of the Demon - I’ll have to check it out!
For different takes on scary / disturbing try Possession (1981), Society (1989), missing (1982)
A great series that's in no way a horror, but deals with real life horrific events, is the 2019 HBO series Chernobyl. Before I watched it, I thought I knew what happened at the nuclear plant in Kyiv. After I watched it...I realized that I had NO IDEA what happened in Kyiv. It's a terrifying situation. And it's one that makes you really feel for the (reportedly) 30 people who died and the 350,000 who were affected or who were displaced, all because of the ambition of a few and a blind eye turned by a prideful government. Not to mention the profound environmental impact, the loss of infrastructure and the cost of the cleanup and ongoing site study. It's absolutely insane and existentially dreadful.
Session 9 and In The Mouth of Madness. Both are very underrated!
I remember being 9 years old watching The Day After with the whole family because it was this big TV event. As an 80s kid there were three things that scared the crap out of you. Acid Rain, Quick Sand and Nuclear war. That movie gave me nightmares and is still on my list of scariest films I have seen.
Is that a Talk to Me hand in the background?!?! ❤
For me the exorcist of Emily Rose was the scariest movie I seen. And most disturbing was. we need to talk about kevin. Really hits hard
Gosh, I wish saw what others see in Sinister. Scott Derrickson in general tends to always drop the ball in his films.
I really like this list because it strays from films that are identified as "horror." Impetigore and Exorcist would be on my list, in place of Strangers. I also love Paranormal Activity 3, but if you have to choose the third of anything, it probably shouldn't make the list.
The fourth kind is probably the scariest pg 13 I've seen. Terrified is very scary, it's a Spanish film from the same creator of when evil lurks. It is probably on shudder but I have the blu ray and I highly recommend it, perhaps the scariest movie I've seen ever.
Sinister is one of my favorites from your list. I enjoyed all of them....twisted & all
I think one that should have been on this list was "dark skies" as it was well put together, not overacting, and twists you weren't seeing happen.
The fourth kind. Oh yes, creepy stuff. Nobody talks about this movie, but i still remember how much it scared the hell out of me. The kinda documentary style makes it much more realistic and therefore more impactful. Well deserved on that list 👍
@JeffRauseo

It’s really underrated!
Most horror films do not scared me except for two. The Fourth Kind while yes should not been promoted as a true story, it still was spooky because of the imagery and hearing the alien's voices. Another for me was Poltergeist from 1982 because of you do not know what is going to happen if you watch the first time and though cheesy, Jerry Goldsmith's soundtrack really amps the horror vibes
The interviews with the woman who was rescued after being with the serial killer scared the absolute fucking shit out of me. Oscar level acting from that actor. I don’t know what it was, but it fucked with me bad.
I love Sinister. Whether it's truly the scariest movie ever made, I admit that, even as desensitised to scary films as I am generally, I was disturbed watching this film and loved it so much because of it. It's why I watch horror films, hoping for that fix that gets me high and is harder and harder to achieve! I'm also a huge fan of home invasion films, so Strangers is up there for me!
The fourth kind scared the crap out of me too!! How they have the interview footage and the "real" footage!! Also, the lady you showed is super creepy too!! Everything about that lady is off-putting!!😬😬
Threads has a lot of integrity because it backs away the lesst about the aftermath of a nuclear war. The Day After is a little tame but it also made the effort to not make a nuclear war the kind of walk in the park that other films do, as if the survivors can just pick up their lives like nothing has happened. Boomers lived through the nuclear age, I'm a younger boomer but fear of end of the world still exists in a tiny place of my psyche.
A couple of favourites of mine that really got under my skin was The Tunnel, The Autopsy of Jane Doe and my all time fav horror film Lake Mungo

Great picks!
i agree with the day after that movie scare me and left me thinking about it for days after i watched it.
Oh yeah. I remember watching the Day after when it aired. It really scared me at the time. I was 17 at the time. We really felt at the time we wouldn’t survive the eighties. We felt a nuclear war was imminent.
Poughkeepsie tapes is fu*#ed lol fourth kind got me back in the day too. Gonna check out Baskin thanks!
Sinister was horrifying. I was not expecting it to go the way it did. Still scares me. Lights Out I slept with the lights on for a week. Pissed my husband off lol. The grudge was another one that scared me. I still can’t sleep in the same room as a closet with a crawl space 🤣
To me, Outbreak is scarier than Contagion. The Descent is a great choice and definitely on my list. A couple others that genuinely scared me are the original Hellraiser and Fatal Attraction. For some reason, my parents took me to see Fatal Attraction when I was 10 years old. I have never watched it since and still remember a lot about it.
@christermyrberg3661

Outbreak is somewhat underrated
I've never been one who gets scared by movies, but I do have a couple of examples: 1. A Quiet Place. That's a movie where the horror lies in seeing it on a big screen. You're in the dark in complete silence, you're staring at a massive screen in front of you, you've been told the concept of the film, you lull yourself into a false sense of security AND THEN OUT OF NOWHERE AN ALIEN SNATCHES UP A HUMAN! Granted, this would only work for a first time watcher, but that can be legit terrifying if you're going in under the right circumstances. 2. The Nun. My wife is a horror lover and she dragged me to see this one. She was completely invested and she jumped out of her skin every 5 minutes. She was so confused when I was completely unfazed by it all. 3. War For The Planet Of The Apes. Technically, this one isn't a horror, it's a drama, but without spoiling, there are scenes in the second half of the film that are genuinely disturbing and terrifying because of how comparable they are to certain European events of the early 1940s...
If you liked Hereditary, I think you’ll like Rob Ager’s symbolic breakdown of the film. Just do a KZread search of the film along with his name or “Collative Learning”.
The Fourth Kind.....yes! I had chills so many times
I THOUGHT FOURTH KIND WAS REAL TOO! I couldn’t look out windows at night for a long time afterwards because I didn’t want to see lights in the sky or god forbid an owl. The session recordings shook me to my core.
Isn’t it funny how we want to be scared by movies. 🍿 great list by the way
As above so below is a great one and of course the Descent and Fire in the Sky
The Strangers for sure was one of the scariest movies I've ever seen, one of the few films that made me jump, I saw it on 35mm in 08, it was great.
When I was young seeing Patrick on HBO was really scary. I understood the medical themed plot and it remains my favorite.
"It" the tv mini series give me my first nightmare as a child, i know not a movie but had to mention it. "The hills have eyes" 2006 made me squirm most as a adult.
Contagion became the number one movie on Netflix during the pandemic lol
As a kid for me, "Fire in the Sky".
