    There was an episode where Joey had Chandler visit the tailor he had been going to for years, and the guy fondled Chandler. When he mentioned it, Joey thought it was normal. He had been molested for years and apparently it was passed off for laughs.

    You think so? I always found this hilarious. And I and the younger sibling of my family and I get why it was turned into a joke. My feeling is that they take common situations and family stereotypes, and make them extreme for that reason. I will say, I love the episode, where they finally realize that Ross is not perfect and him and Monica go back-and-forth tattling on one another lol.

    As a gay man and Friends fan myself, I don't think Chandler was necessarily homophobic towards his father; it was mostly his coming out that ended his parents' marriage when Chandler was a child (during the family holiday of Thanksgiving to add insult to injury). That can be very traumatic for any child and some carry it for most of their lives before they can reconcile it as adults. And as a minor note, Charles Bing/Helena Handbasket (love that pun!) was never actually identified as a full-on transgendered character. There was no mention if he switched his pronouns or gender and he was mostly portrayed as a drag queen. Granted he was played by a cis-actress so perhaps it was left to our imagination. Furthermore sitcoms and series of the past are a reflection of their eras and show what the world was like in times gone by. It's really no different to comedians making jokes about the issues of today at the expense of various members of their audience. Instead of overly criticizing these sitcoms, maybe we can just appreciate how much the world has improved. I really worry that cancel-culture may be getting a bit out of hand these days. It's like no one is allowed to enjoy anything anymore...

    Friends has a perfect representation of a Healthy relationship (Monica & Chandler) Toxic relationship (Ross & Rachel) and Platonic relationship (Phoebe & Joey). Although Ross is THE worst character, David Schwimmer is the best actor of the bunch, his delivery was always excellent 🤌 Ross had some good qualities, and without Ross being the worst, we wouldn't have had those teachable moments (although not hitting on family members, should have been a given 😅)

    Chandler and Monica are not a perfect relationship, but a toxic one, as Monica is always belittling Chandler as a man and she is abusive for only allowing her opinions to count in the relationship, when in fact it is a two-way street. And the WORST CHARACTER is Rachel who is only funny when she has other characters to push her, not Ross who is a human being who actually makes mistakes, besides being very funny and a person willing to help everyone.

    For me he most unforgiving moment is Ross's refusal to divorce Rachel after Vegas. Him asking Rachel to stay his wife - not because they can give it a try, or that they'll be good together - just because he didn't want another divorce! That is his only argument. And after, staying secterly married to Rachel, lying to her about it, was also very stupid. At first it was funny, but now - rewatching it 10 years later - I find this situation deeply disturbing... Plus, Rachel, thinking that Ross "took care" of things, and that she didn't sign a paper - was also very stupid. And how they both dealt with inevitable divorce - childish.

  • @kirjoittajajenni
    @kirjoittajajenni Жыл бұрын

    Okay, so Ross dated a student. So did Monica and Rachel (well, briefly, but anyway). I never thought that Chandler's father's storyline was bad. Any child would have difficulties dealing with parents divorce and understanding why dad likes now boys and dresses like a woman. But Chandler wanted to learn and forgive, and invited his father to his wedding and even called him beautiful. In my opinion that was a perfect way to show that their relationship was healed. Ross also attended Carol's and Susan's wedding, and showed some growth there dealing with that stuff. There are of course problems on this show, but to make a show interesting and entertaining characters have to have flaws and they have to make stupid decicions, because perfect and vanilla characters aren't interesting. And if you start to look at these over 20 year old shows too closely from this day's perspective, everything can start to seem wrong, even the smallest jokes.

    Not the same. The issue was Ross dating his own student, on his work place, which is pretty unethical and against their code of conduct. Monica's was bad, but not because the guy happened to be a student, but because of his age (I'd have included that on the list tbh, the age thing was pretty bad). Rachel dating some random college student was pretty inconsequential, a worse one for her would be her dating Tag, her direct employee, though at least he wasn't quite as young as Elisabeth. Though, really, imo the worst offender was Ms. Knight, who dated Frank, Phoebe's 18yo brother who was also her high-school student. They're a funny couple, but that storyline always creeps me out.

    Technically Ross was right about Mark. Not for nothing he thought he was happily married until Carol cheated on him and left him for Susan. Rather then acknowledge what he went through as horrible they make fun of it. In the end his Friends wasn't there for him like he was for them. I'm tired of the Ross hate. Though the cousin thing I can never defend.

    Alot of people here saying how they hate Ross while I'm over here thinking that Ross is one of my favorite characters😅 Yes, he did things that were not okay, but so did everyone else. Rachel tried to sabotage all of Ross's relationships and then continued to not want to pursue a relationship with him. The Bonnie thing was ridiculous and then she had to rub it in his face that he was a cheater (have a whole other opinion about this situation) after reading the letter that she wrote to him. Why? Because deep down she always loved him. Phoebe didn't always treat Chandler right and if you wanna bring in cheating, she kissed David while being with Mike. Monica was fine at first with the OCD, but it got to be really bad, especially when she was in charge of Phoebe's wedding. And she wanted Chandler to spend all of his savings in a huge wedding that he didn't necessarily want. He wanted to be married to her of course, but he wanted to put that money towards a house for them. Chandler kissed Kathy while being with Joey (even though she showed interest in him) and fat shamed Monica in their early years. And yes, Joey is a beloved character, but he was a player. There were a few women who wanted him to call back and he never did, making it seem like it was their fault. And as far as the list goes, Ross was dumb to write it, but the guys shouldn't have encouraged his to compare the two in the first place. But guess what? That's what makes the show so great. Every character has their own flaws because no one is perfect. The show would have been too damn boring if everyone was perfect and there were no flaws. I'm not offended by anything these characters did BTW, I was just pointing out that they have all done things that weren't great. I love the show and agree that some concepts wouldn't be allowed today. Thats why I'm glad it was made years ago😂

    It may be abhorrent, what Paolo does, but that’s kinda the truth in our history. I don’t think the writers did anything wrong really. He was gross and they gave it a light humorous spin while also personally calling him out on his behavior. Unfortunately, that’s kinda the truth on how we had to handle it for so long. It may be handled differently today but writing it into a lighthearted sitcom was simply just true to form for our recent past. Things like that were so common and we just had to accept it, while it’s not ok and not funny anymore in current TV sitcom humor it’s a good reminder of how casual and common it was.

    So ross is stuck between two women, he has to choose one, and because he decided to weigh his options it's unforgivable? Everything he said about Rachael was 100% true. How about Rachael basically sabotaging every relationship Ross had? How is that not even referenced? How about the Friends cast trying to push together a ridiculously toxic Ross/Rachel romance that would be always doomed to fail? Screwing over people's lives? That's not an issue. But they made a joke about someone who's not even trans! That's worse than death

  • @GreyWind1988

    Oh and I'm not done. Insurance fraud. Rachael tells Monica to commit a crime Monica sleeping with a 17 year old. Joey can cheat all he wants but with Paulo, a meaningless fling with a language barrier is worse? Ross staging a fake memorial service for himself after posting fake pictures of chandler having sex with men? But don't worry. Transphobia is worse. Totally Chandler lying to Janice, effectively screwing her out of a good house in a good neighborhood? That's okay but heaven forbid you make a fat reference. Let's play Chandler's smoking addiction for laughs, but let's not say a man who is boring without his drinking is boring. Constantly lying on your resume? Yeah that's fine

    I disagree with the fat shaming one, as someone who is fat trying to lose weight (3 stone lost in the last 6 months) it feels good to lose weight, hearing people say it's fine to be fat disgusts me, it's not healthy, it really is better to be getting thinner, sometimes people do need a kick up the backside to start losing weight. And I laughed and still laugh at the fat jokes.
