My two littermate brothers, tabbies have completely different voices. Flearoy has a soft little voice, he calls to me to scratch him while he eats or to refresh his kibble. He never gets loud. Lynyrd must have meezer blood because he hits just about every vocalization possible except for chatter. AND...he never stops lol I recently took on three siblings from a neighbor, a ginger Tom and his two tortie sisters. They purr like cold diesels but have the tiniest sweetest high pitched voices! I swear they are part bat!

Oh yeah, neither Lynyrd nor Flearoy purr. Lynyrd does get a pyramidal ridge down the length of his back when he is exceptionally happy. I've never seen anything like it and I've been around a lot of kitty faces in my 67 years.

One of my 2 cats has me trained, she calls me when she has used the cat box. I once heard her call when she used the box and I cleaned it right away, that’s all it took for her to decide that I’m expected to clean her box as soon as she calls me. I’m well trained!

One of mine wants company while he goes to the litter box. And since that was cute I started to get up when he meowed to join him in the bathroom. But he started to meow for getting candy, cuddle or play and since I work from home I can't always drop everything and play with him or go and cuddle on the bed even if I wanted to so I stopped getting up unless he was sitting near the bathroom... He quickly learnt that so he started to sit outside of the bathroom and call for me, and when I got up he ran to the kitchen or the bedroom 😆So I soon caught up on his plan so I started to only get up if he actually was in the bathroom... So he started to go in to the bathroom and meow and then run to the bedroom or kitchen... So now I started to only get upp if I heard him go in one of the boxes.... (he always digs a bit before he does his thing so I usually hear that...) But he understood that too and started banging och the box and fake dig sitting outside of the box just making sounds so I would come and then he ran off to the bed or the kitchen🤣. So I had to start ignoring that too🙁. I just couldn't dropp everything while in a meeting to go and cuddle even if I wanted to... So now I ignore it unless I'm off work so he stopped doing it daytime and only does it if I'm in the soffa... Now he can wait for me to stop working or for my partner to come home and demand that we walk him to his litterbox and then when he's done he runs to the bed or the kitchen :-) And if he has to go but no one joins him he always comes back meowing very low and grumpy like he's talking to him self muttering about the bad service.😂 He also calls for you when he's hiding under blankets and things like playing hide and seek... he goes hiding and then he wants me to find him. His brother on the other hand is much less vocal. He can sometimes call for attention or food and candy but usually he chatters... when there is birds outside or if I have candy in my hand and are about to put it in one of his activity boxes :-)

I have a rescue feral colony. My fur kids are humane society "working" cats, fixed and vaccinated but not considered adoptable It was so interesting that they were so silent. However, one of them has bonded with me and he has started meowing when he sees me and now the oldest and the most feral cat has started meowing to me too. We have spent several years getting them to trust us through the "kitty kiss-slow blink" lots of treats, catnip, fishing pole toys and respecting their boundaries.

Isn't it interesting how the yowl is used for both the pre-fight psych out (seemingly trying to avoid a fight by being perceived as the tougher cat by the other) and as a mating call? What I noticed is that the pitch of the mating call is slightly higher than the psych out. Also my one cat used to talk to me in long "sentences." He would string together 15, 20 or more tones while looking at me. I get the impression that, as I talk to my pets in normal speech and not baby talk, he picked up that this is how his human slave communicates, and tried to do the same. Finally, when the one cat would come into a room I was in, I would always ask, "How are you?" Eventually, he would walk into a room and go "wah-ohh-wah." It hit me one day that he was replicating the sound of the interrogatory "how are you." He wasn't doing the words, obviously, but the sound and pitch of it. He seemed to understand it was a greeting. What we can learn if we just pay attention... Take care.

I have 2 Maine Coons and they have a language all their own, something I haven't heard before in a cat. Not a meow or a hiss, they have trills or tribble sounds that are as long as some sentences. Very, very talkative they are, usually when they walk into the room, kinda announce their presence, they might interact if they are so inclined to jump up on my lap 😹

I'm allergic to cats, unfortunately, and a friend of mine used to put her cat, Pongo, in the basement when I would visit. One time my friend went to the bathroom before she put the cat away, and as Pongo walked past me, for some reason I purred, just on a whim. Pongo was almost out the living room door and immediately turned around, ran to me, and leapt up into my lap, purring! I realized he had taken my purring as an invitation to be petted, so I petted him, until my friend came. I had to. I'd inadvertently made a kind of promise! Then I washed my hands.

My cat lived to 20 years of age, I grew up with her many different sounds and had a good idea what she wanted (more often than not attention, she was always picky with food and she loved being handled). She would occasionally catch mice, and she used to yowl once she entered the house with a mouse. We always knew when she'd caught something because she used to yowl; she didn't mind us taking her prey and would stop vocalising once we approached her to dispose of the mouse!

Before I let my cats outside at all, they had a certain set of sounds. Then, when I let them outside, they picked up "alley cat". It was a harsh and vulgar language. After a few days of not going outside, the would go back to gentile language. I have always been sceptical about cats not vocalizing to each other when meeting other cats because I saw this pattern repeated for years. When we moved from the city to the eastern shore of VA, I noticed that they started immitating more bird sounds. It is especially obvious when mockingbirds are vocal which is when the birds are training their young. I wish I could record it but I never know when it is going to happen. They are Maine Coons and once they started talking, they never stopped and the cognitive range is amazing. Below in a response I descibe that mine, too, lets me know when he needs to "go".

I am also skeptical to the idea that cats never vocalize to each other (I'm writing this as I'm listening to my British Shorthair making all sorts of noises because he has slight zoomies and is playing by himself lol). I had this cat who was completely silent until I got another cat that was very vocal and it was only then he realized he could also be vocal. Also, as I wrote, they often seem to make a lot of noise all by themselves at no particular person or thing and you got to wonder what this communication is meant to serve since it just seems to be them talking because they can. They obviously do it because they know someone is around to hear them but it doesn't seem to be directed at anyone in particular outside of them potentially communicating some kind of general "this is what I'm doing/thinking/feeling right now".

Some cats also purr when hurt & scared, as if to say to another cat, "please don't hurt me." Goes with the "I'm no threat to you" thing too. At least in my observations of my many kitties over lifetime (7 currently - rescues find me). Have seen it most after spayed or other surgery ~ they're kinda' helpless & in pain & are pleading with us, or another cat, that they're hurting & please don't hurt /touch them right now.

My cats also do the 'worry'. We have a large compound, which is their private kingdom. If someone comes to the gate, I know before they knock because the cats give a little growl, like guard dogs. If the person comes into the compound, they do a very comic slink away, worrying. It's kind of like a high-pitched 'ow' sound. Like, 'sorry mum, you're on your own.' As soon as they recognise the person, they come out of hiding. They can be extremely affectionate, but I'm glad their first response is to leg it. Keep themselves safe. They also chatter a lot. Usually very relaxed with small birds, and I do think it’s to try and lure them closer. But I’ve also seen them doing it to great big kites, twice their size, with their tails all puffed up like they’re afraid, but they were edging closer not away. 🤔

I have a boy and a girl that I adopted as kittens at the same time. Both 1 year old now. My girl tries to speak human to me. If she wants favorite (wet food she LOVES) I’ll ask her if she’s been a good sweetie. She understands good sweetie and no no no sweetie. If she’s been good she says Myaa! If she’s been naughty she ignores me lol My boy does this thing he’s been doing since a kitten where he hides around the corner and meows ONLY to get my attention. The second he hears me move because he knows I’m going to go to him he makes this happy little trill sound, tail up, trotting over to me. It’s like a game we play. Lol My girl does this other thing when I hide around the corner and peak at her I swear it sounds like she’s laughing and she comes running over to me tail up. It’s so cute 😀

One of my cats, Josie - one of two sisters - and will sit at our glass door, looking outside - and chirp and chatter. Once Josie get locked onto something, I can get her to really get vocal about it by chattering at her. We'll take turns chattering, while she locks on something outside. But, it's now taken to being in the house, too. Josie has anxieties and very skittish - even with us. My daughter and Josie have a strong bond and me and Josie have a strong bond, too, but not quite as strong as the bond with she has with my daughter. When Josie is in my daughters bedroom - either on her bed or in her lap - and I'll walk by. We'll start chattering at each other. She'll see me and chatter and I'll chatter back. And then she always jumps down and comes and rubs around my legs. I was surprised to find all the advice is about cats chirping and chattering as a sign of fixating on their pray. I mean, she does do that 100%, too. But when she and I are chattering and chirping at each other, nothing about it feels aggressive or hostile. It's like a special conversation between us. We often joke and say she doesn't like "being caught" with her tiny hooman by her big hooman. Like she's afraid one of us will get jealous. Or that she has to reassure me that she loves me, too - because she always jumps down and comes and rubs against my legs.

I love learning stuff like this. My kitten just woke up from his afternoon nap, looked at me and said "brrrrrp!" He walked up, said "brrp" again and then jumped into my lap and started purring. Seems I have a happy boy on my hands. :) I agree that editing some vocalizations in would be helpful. I don't entirely understand all of the sounds you're describing.

Loved hearing this . Just wondered about the death growl which my cat gave me two years ago just before she passed over. I think she was making sure I would go ahead and let her go, which I did. I know humans sometimes make a sound before they pass and I am sure she was telling me not to weaken, it was her time. She had had s stroke.

My almost 2 year old girl kitty uses the high trilling sound a lot , especially when she wants her supper . She rubs against me while trilling to get me to feed her. She is a talker too! If you talk to her she talks back, we carry on conversations all the time and I’m the only one she does that with, makes my husband jealous. She’s a “Torbie “ and I have been told they are big talkers! My senior boy kitty is very quiet and only meows if he wants something or sort of “yells” at me if I’m not paying attention and he really wants something.

My 12 year old cat will sometimes at night make a sort of mournful cry that sounds like a baby crying. She'll be in another room and suddenly start doing it and it goes on for a minute and then she stops. She doesn't seem in pain. I can call out to her and she'll stop. It's the loudest noise she makes. Even her meow is a silent or very soft meow. This baby cry sound will echo in the apartment quite loudly. At first I thought she was looking for our other cat, but she just sits in the room and doesn't go searching. Our other cat doesn't do this, nor does she respond to the first cat. She only does this at night, usually after I go to bed. And she isn't shut out of the bedroom. She can come get on the bed any time she wants. I don't know what to make of it. She's been doing it several years (I adopted her from a shelter when she was 2.)

My cat tends to make a yowling sound, usually at night, often when the lights go out or almost exclusively if we are not in the room with him. It is exceptionally loud. He is an elderly deaf cat and I think he has poor eyesight, he also appears to be a bit socially-inept. It appears to happen when he is looking for us. Usually, when he does this, we will go to the room he is in or pat him to show him we are there, if we are behind him or surprise him with a pat, this usually turns into a trill. I presume much of this is because he is sensory deprived. We adopted a little sister for him a month ago after his big sister died last year (although his big sister never took to him) and he no longer yowls as much, if at all, he just chirps / trills for her when he wants her attention and she will come running. There is a lot more trilling going on in this household at the moment. He loves his little sister

You can make the sound by starting with a b then roll the rrrs and roll up to a high pitch t. He seems to always be happy when he makes this noise. Out of our 9 cats he's the only one that makes that sound. One of the others just makes little adorable meep sounds. We've heard her give 2 sad little meows when she really wants something. Her meeping also appears to be a happy sound.

My six year old male American Shorthair, Widget, is an in-and-out cat. When he comes in he trills up a storm without the slightest hint of a meow. He keeps that up until he finds where I am in the house. When he's satisfied I'm somewhere inside, he stops trilling and goes off to do some cat thing - usually checking out the food bowl but also sometimes just flaking out on the floor away from me. I always interpreted what he was telling me as a question: "Are you here?" And then when he sees where I'm at and stops vocalizing, I think he's telling me, "OK, just checking."

This video was very informative. I adopted a kitten back in October and he meowed a lot. He doesn't do it as much but he still meows obviously. Haha My kitten does the "greeting" meow all the time. Hahaha and the meow that you roll your tongue with. The one meow he does, I have no idea what it means. It sounds like, "eh!" but in kitty form. He also purrs a lot. He's such a happy kitty. I think the other sign he shows he's happy is that he rolls on his back a lot. Hahaha Like dogs do in the grass but he does it on the floor. lol My only complaint is that you didn't use audio for the cat meows. It would've been helpful. Other than that, this video helped a lot. I just wanna speak cat so I know what he's saying. lol

I have a really big black cat. I should have named him Bob, after silent Bob. He does not like being picked up and has the tiniest mew, you would think it was a kitten. Then there is the growl of disapproval which is for the trash truck, the mail person and construction noise. That's it. I've had a lot of cats but he is by far the quietest cat ever.

My late Burmese used to "woof" - she would open her mouth and make an abrupt "oof" sound by forcing air out of her lungs with a contraction of her diaphragm, so that her whole upper body jerked forwards. This was only ever in response to humans talking to her, so I think she was trying to talk back! Several of my cats also made the "Hey, look, I caught a prey animal" sound, which is a deep meow/yowl, slightly muffled by having a mouse (or small toy) clamped in the cat's jaws 😂

Now, when we’re at home… he only make like a very small whisper and he rubs against my legs and do that.

I have two female cats (sisters) which were born from a stray mother at a farm. I got them because the farmer did not want more cats. Every day, when they come home to my house, they meow until we greet or walk to them. After that, they rub against our legs and purr. When we pet them, they purr longer and louder. When I make the food for them, they are waiting without a tone, but when the meal is ready, and I pick up the bowl and bring it to its place on the floor, they make the murmuring / chirping sound. I love that sound so much, that I mimic it and get my cats to do it again 1 or 2 times. I really can hear their joy that it is feeding time. I love them so much. They are now 6 years with us and I hope that they will have a long and healthy life.
