The Calatrava is the only Patek I like, but I would have gone for the Vacheron Fiftysix instead. All the heritage at less than half the price.

The 56 finishing is closer to a Rolex than a Patek though. Patrimony traditionnelle is the real answer. However, these days I'm no longer into watch investment. I bought two homes, one in Malibu and the other in California, spent a total of $24 million, and the return on investment is crazy-far better than collecting watches for me.

Nice list! For JLC, I think the Polaris Memovox would've been awesome. For A. Lange Sohne, I think some version of the Lange 1 with its iconic layout would've been a better choice. And finally, some brands I'm sad to see didn't make the list: Zenith, Breguet, and Blancpain.
Longines - good choice. Moon phase nice, but my suggestion is the 1946 Chrono. A lovely "retro" dial, and the case is beautifully finished/polished. It is very "handsome", as they'd probably say in the late 40's. The Monaco is certainly worthy of your choice. Again lovely looking, beautifully finished. (The Seiko "Monaco" from the early 70's is also a really nice chrono. NOT in the "luxury" category, but a very, very good watch.) I wore mine from 1975 every day until 1978, when it was replaced by another (totally different) watch.
Andrew and Tom, such lovely repartie and script - brilliant , and a helpful video
Took one of the Omegas from you guys earlier this year, love, love, love it! Grey dial, looks great when im in a suit or scraggy jeans... stunning 🙂
Owww.... that Calatrava. So much elegance, so much understatement. Great list!

I'm not from Mars but from a nearby planet in the unfashionable end of the western spiral arm of the Galaxy and have to agree with Tom's list. So many great watches but so few wrists. It's great to see the Longines Moon phase there, it's quite an understated watch that looks great in the flesh. I could mention a few others from the brand that might also fit but I won't bore you more than I already have. There were a couple of other surprises in the list as well. A JLC that wasn't a Reverso but the cracking Polaris and the Calatrava and not the usual ones from PP. The only other surprise was that the Submariner was the classic no date version. Well done Tom.

Like many I suspect, I began my horology journey with the generic option. The pre ceramic Sub, which I adored totally. Over time, tastes change slightly and you dive head first into the realm of brands you had never heard of to begin with but my Lange sits happily with the RM, Breguet and others, that mean just as much as the Accurist, my late father gave me when I was young. Buy the piece that makes you happy when you see it on your wrist, never when you see it on someone else's. Namaste all.
I'm glad that i at least own 3 of the 10 brands mentioned. Yay approval and justification! 😅
Spot on
VC traditionale the one with that dial you know the one Cheers!
I love the Patek.
In no particular order: 1. Omega Speedmaster 2. Rolex GMT or Datejust 3. Patek Philippe Calatrava 4. Jaeger Le Coultre Reverso 5. A. Lange & Sohne Datograph 6. Grand Seiko Spring Drive Snowflake 7. Cartier Tank or Santos 8. Vacheron Constantin Overseas 9. Audemars Royal Oak 10. Breguet Classique I own only the Speedmaster and don't have an interest in the majority of them. But they are icons nonetheless.

I'd definetly add one of the new electrostatic Accutrons. They are still first gen tech with all that brings with it (servicing only in Japan, ginormous size dictated by the movement being made up of technology never thought possible at the size, strict (though arguably innovative) power management, ...) but they look truly amazing and if we consider Spring Drive the next step in the evolution after Mechanical and Quartz, I'd argue that electrostatic is the step after that. The silky smooth sweep (I have yet to see one next to a Spring Drive but as it stands I could be convinced that it is, as unbelievable as that might be, slightly smoother than the already amazing tech by Grand Seiko), the electrostatic turbines generating power via movement, that electrostatic motor, all put on display with no attempt to hide it are pure poetry. It is nerdy, but in the best way, not just pushing the envelope of what was thought technologically possible, but also celebrating it. The second they get one even close to wearable for my tiny wrists, I will fork over the cash. Also, hard to say whether this still constitues your definition of Luxury in the watch space, but maybe a Junghans Max Bill, just for being, as far as I am aware, the only watch currently in production that doesn't just talk about being "minimalistic" and "bauhaus-inspired" but has actual credentials dating back to that art school/innovation factory/never ending party. Minimalism is often adopted, both by new up-and-comers and established players, but most just ape it without understanding the minutiae. The Max Bill, in my humble opinion, does this better than anyone else, most likely simply due to the architect and namesake behind it.

Longines could do better but I suspect they're kept on a tight leash by Swatch Group so as not to upset the Omega brand position, Their recent Ultra-Chron diver reissue is amazing value for the money. A wide range here which in some case only just makes it to luxury in the accepted sense, but if funds are low a Seiko 5 is a luxury. I'd have included something from Cartier with their resurgence in sales and the JLC should have been a Reverso.

I must be one of the only people who don’t like rolex … even the famous submarina… I went for the Seamaster 300
“The Speedmaster has been sullied by a bunch of plastic replicas lately” hahaha I die
Breitling Navitimer over Chronomat. Also No.2 the Lange movement finishing is better at the entry level compared to No.1 Calatrava which is sort of entry for Patek? Rolex GMT is also iconic, 1st GMT watch that is the "blueprint" for GMT watches if I am not wrong. The Glycine Airman predates GMT but its just a 24 hour hand and dial. Lastly the Daytona which demand for it is just crazy.
I have both the 2022 models, the seamaster 300 black on rubber strap and sub date. I cant say which I like more. They both compete for wrist time. Omega is more fun and dial is something to look at, Rolex has a bit more elegant look. Omega is extremly accurate, rolex just really solidly made with great strap. Every one has its own advantages. I really loved the first watch in the video, the Longines, lovely dial and amazing price.

Accuracy is overrated. My most accurate watch is a Mido Commander 1959 Chronometer. I have set it 8 days ago and still shows the same time as the reference.
Andrew, do an expose on Titoni watches. Another channel featured them but as I tried to look up this Swiss watch company, I couldn’t find anything. They seem like a more polished Tag Heurer but without the heritage :-)
1815 chrono. Black dial. The end.
Zenith Defy EL PRIMERO 21 should be at top of this list
A dream list! Though I would include cartier santos in place of the tag, and either master thin / reverso in place of the polaris. O man all beautiful pieces why are we in this stupid hobby!
When will Omega get rid of the awful Helium escape valve? I don’t know how they would come up with it in the first place. It totally ruins their watches.
To be honest, that moonphase longines looks cheap, because of the dial patterns. I really don't like it. the blue dial looks nice tho
Grand Seiko has been up and coming for a long while now. Grand Seiko can no keep making the mistakes and ride on this narrative given some of their shortcomings in the brand. Fix those bracelets and give us a proper extension for example. You are no longer young and upcoming now that you are middle-aged!
"The Omega Seamaster is good...in comparison to the Rolex Submariner." That says it all...🤷♂️....awesome video!
A Breguet grand feu or an A Lange & Sohne Copper blue would get my vote...

Yeah but Tudor is a bit soulless. Longines is great, I think the problem is they don't try to pretend they are precious. Any airport has a Longines store (or a Swatch store to be precise with a Longines section) unlike say Omega. This makes the brand feel more accessible. However lets keep some context, they are still $3-4k watches and that is not peanuts. Still for the top 0.01% (or even less).
The omega coaxial 8800 movement is pretty much bomb proof, I've had it in my little aqua terra for a year and a half and it's still going strong... 💪basically idiot proof

I'll probably get some ire here, but - as much as I like clean design and minimalism - the Calatrava did age, and not that great. Movado Museum is so similar, even has the same proportions - and pulls of the look well, because if you do minimalism wrong it ends up simplistic and flat.

Like that JLC and the Monaco are here. The Rolex should have been the Day-Date. Fifty-Fathoms or Odysseus could have replaced the Submariner or even the BB58 really. Not that the Sub isn't a better watch than the 58, but it just seems pointless at this point. I wish Breguet, Glashütte and F. P. Journe would have made the list. Also Zenith instead of Breitling. Too many "celebrities"
Can anyone offer an informed opinion as to where Dubey Scheldenbrand falls in the hierarchy of laudable watch brands?
Will your wife come back on and do one for women? I usually just shop the smaller end of mens watches. But I'd love an opinion for womens watches specifically.

not disputing the prestige status, but i would rather leave patek off the list. i would have made a second list where patek ap and vc were all on the same list as they are widely viewed as the holy trinity brands that are always in the same conversation. maybe put a cartier santos, or some breguet, zenith, or a panerai. also i love longine but its maybe below these brands so i would have that switched out as well.
My favourite thing about this list is that there’s not a Tudor to be seen. Just as it should be 👍🏻 #alliswell #blandbay
