TOP 10 Low Light Houseplants + Understanding Low Light In Your Home 🌿

Ойын-сауық

I've made videos about low light houseplants before, but there's a few areas that I feel often get ignored when it comes to actually growing HEALTHY plants in low light. In this video I take you through 10 of my favourite plants that are not just surviving, but THRIVING in low light in my home. I turn off the lights and take you round to them in order to show you exactly what low light means and how I've applied it to growing in all areas of my home. I really hope you enjoy it!

I know it's not that important, however there are actually plants, that can survive without any light. They are called mycoheterotrophic plants and don't have any chlorophyll because they live in a symbiotic relationship with mushrooms :)

A friend of mine has a golden Pothos in her windowless bathroom, the door is always closed so that it‘s pitch black in there. She doesn‘t even dust the leaves, last time she watered the plant was over a month ago and it‘s growing like crazy. No idea how, but this plant is unkillable 😂

Oh Claire, this is absolutely wonderful! Thank you for taking the lead in realistically demonstrating the lighting conditions (within your environment) and touching on key points. It's helpful that we take a step back and evaluate our environment to determine if a plant we desire will thrive and survive in our space❤🪴👏👍🫂

I was so excited that you mentioned the ficus Alii because I have never heard anyone else mention it. I've had one for many years and it grew so large that I put it in my back yard patio in a pot; I've propagated it and stuck the cuttings in water and had so many root. Unfortunately when we had that big freeze in Feb. 2021 here in Houston, TX the large mother ficus succumed to the freeze because she was so large in the pot, I couldn't bring it inside. I tried covering it but it was such an unusual bitter weather, it couldn't handle it. Thankfully I had many cuttings from her and the young-ins are doing great and thriving.

Lucky bamboo can handle low light like a champ. I've been neglecting mine FAR from my grow light for over 2+ years & it continues to grow tall & wild. I've had many days where it had absolutely no light & still shows new growth😅 I have it in leca so there's ZERO pests & it's such an easy yet fulfilling plant to keep. Just be careful when adding fertilizer since they're pretty prolific growers😂

I'm a huge fan of Aglaonemas and also Pothos. Golden Pothos along with my curly Spider plants) grow in very low light and I use them in darker areas of my home with no problems. I'd say the Pothos have been the most adaptable to low light in my experience - they just love to grow!

🇦🇺 Well! Someone had fun videoing and editing this segment 😂. I can't tell you how much I like seeing your 'mess' it brings a sense of natural genuineness. As does your playfulness - reminds me so much of Sandra Bullock and Genna Davis - I find their acting to be very realistic. The way you demonstrated low light made so much sense to me, I now finally realise that my plants are better off than I think they are! 😁 I never thought I'd like a Ficus but I love the Alli and the umbellata 💕 and I've found the Alli easy to look after. After seeing your aglaonema in a previous segment I knew they'd be perfect in a ceiling hanging planter and they are! Thank you. Brilliant segment Claire, thank you so much.

@@Silly7852I’ve had a gnat problem for a while and found out 3 days ago one of my roommates plants had fungal gnats. We figured out which plant it was by getting some little sticky gnat traps on sticks you can stake in the pots, and within a couple hours we found the culprit plant because it was the only one who’s trap had a TON of gnats while the others had maybe one. She took it outside and repotted the plant with fresh soil and cleaned the pot and they’re almost completely gone now 3 days later! We left the other sticky traps in the pots to catch any strays, but overall it was a fairly simple fix in this case.

For the darker corners of my flat, I would like a maranta lemon lime, a Calathea makoyana, and an Agleonema orange flame. I do have grow lightbulbs, but haven't found the right fixtures for them yet. I am VERY picky when it comes to interior decoration. Great vid!

Diffenbachias but not them. They are so easy! Their leaves never brown thry always look great. Much easier than my 24 different prayer plants and 12 Alocasias!! Aglaonemas are such beautiful undemanding plants.

Thank you for this video and showing your beautiful plants. I would reall love a part two of this. 😊 Do you have a luxmeter? It would be so interesting to know in numbers how dark it really is, so we can compare in our homes. As for the plants: Calatheas are my favorite type of plant. They are so beautiful. I keep mine in my office and when they start to put up their leaves, I now it's time for me to finish work for the day 😊 I have normal household humidity and never had any problems. What I have found though is that they love being shoved into corners where there is little air movement. They grow happiest there for me. Also they tell you when to water again or when something is not right: they don't move their leaves in the evening. When I see one not moving, I check the soil and then water

I have a very large fycus tree of the variety you showed in this video. It has a single thick trunk and looks like the Truffela trees in the Lorax story. It stands about 6’5” tall and is aptly named Truffela ❤. We have named all the plants and trees. Their names match their make… the fiddle leaf fig tree is named Newton and so on😂.

Your maranta (I call it a prayer plant) might be having problems on account of the soil you’re using. I’ve found that they grow best in either only water, or a really simple soil mix like coco coir and perlite. The long stretch between leaves suggests insufficient light (despite them being a low light plant). I suspect lowering it from the ceiling by a foot will resolve some of those issues.

Ctenanthe lubbersiana is an absolutely gorgeous naturally variegated (yellow) plant that's the absolute easiest prayer plant relative I've ever had. Mine is happily living in 30% humidity (Canada in the winter...) and doesn't seem to care. I suspect that Ctenanthe in general is the easiest of the bunch. (Mine was sold as a Calathea Pilos, and I bought it figuring that I'd murder the pretty little thing, but it's thriving and popping out a leaf every 2-3 weeks. The best sort of surprise!)

On the window sill of my home office (southwest, but with balcony over it and tree in front of it) I collect my Dieffenbachias (4) and my Zamioculcas (3). Also, I placed a Darcaena fragrans there to slow its growth. Same for a Ficus elastica, which I want to keep small without cutting it too much. Moreover, a Codiaeum variegata is growing quite happily there. The depth of my living room is still unpopulated and also the ceilings are free of hanging baskets, so plenty of room for expansion with light/humidity zones, cabinets and moss poles. No plants at all in my windowless bathrooms and the bedroom and the dark hallway. With grow lights, I am planning to extend my collection into the hallway. The majority of my plants are paced in front of the south facing window of my living room and the floor-to-ceiling balcony front. But I am still in the double digits with my collection. The next genera to branch into are Aglaomena, Epipremnum, Peperomia, Marantha and Calathea. For the time being, I shy away from Anthurium, Alocasia, and Philodendron, mainly for space reasons.

I have found that self watering pots work best for those prayer plants and family. Otherwise it is a frequent watering situation... which I don't mind. I think this is why semi-hydro works because it is essentially a form of self watering system. I find these are thirsty-thirsty plants. It's missing a watering session that can prove detrimental.

I really struggle with this here in Mexico. It seems I either have full, direct sun which is too intense even for tomatoes during the summer months, or my cool rather dark house. I have installed shelves on the East facing windows that get morning sun, but houses here are largely built to protect the interior from the hot sun. I almost have killed a jewel orchid which is so beautiful and supposedly likes very dark forest floor type environments. I switched it to chunky bark and perlite, but just moved it to my patio to get a bit more light. Anyway, more very low light plant suggestions would be welcome, though I think I need to get some grow lights.

Just curious: Are the leaves in your P. Dean McDowell facing the opposite side of the window naturally or do you rotate it ocasionally? My gloriosum is near a East facing window and all leaves try to face towards the window (and against us people :') )

I noticed a climbing plant with leaves shut in a door. What is it and does that bother you?

How do you water the hanging plants without water going everywhere? All of the pots have holes in the bottom and aren't in cover pots

I thought the same! I suppose she takes them off the hook, water and re-put them back, a bit time consuming
