RIP Joey. When I first got into metal, I mostly listened to NU metal, and definitely hadn’t heard deathmetal/deathcore/metalcore/grind/etc. drumming and tbh didn’t appreciate drums much. I mostly just loved the riffs. But after hearing Joey’s drumming in Slipknot I started to really listen to the drums. He was probably exposed more people to blast beats then anyone else, but also had a really cool sense of groove.

He was so easy to spot when you heard him, not many drummers have that kind of distinction. A very punchy and aggressive sound that was very clean and even groovy. Along with his crisp and powerful snare drum that he always incorporated in ways that most drummers would just fill with the kick drum or one of the toms. He will be missed in the metal world and indeed the drumming world.

By playing fast isn't everything when you are a drummer, speed is not the only thing. Very important to know the timing, the rhythm and keep on time than going fast for the sake of drumming and Samus did take a lot of practice from starting slow and after multiple practices he worked it right up to where's he's at. Like them Samus is a totally different drummer but I do love hearing different drummers with what they got with their skills.

This closed that gap between sub-genres in metal and in my opinion, opened up many doors and pathways for other bands to follow.
