I had to laugh because I‘m a german speech therapist. When he said that germans must have a very strong tongue i think of the kids in therapy. Some have do do „tongue training“ because their tongue is too weak to pronounce some sounds 😂

INF2401 A Tongue has several muscles just like any other body part. And when a person doesn‘t train the tongue muscles, they degrade. Most of the time kids have this problem, but there are also adults. Sorry for my bad english 🙈

Und genau deswegen hatten wir in der alten deutschen Schrift (u.a. Fraktur und Sütterlin), die die verdammten Nazis 1940/41 abgeschafft haben, ein langes (ſ) und ein rundes (s) "s". Ein bekanntes Beispiel diesbezüglich ist auch Wachstube, was einmal Wach-Stube oder Wachs-Tube sein kann. Dadurch, dass wir nur noch ein "s" haben - abgesehen vom ß - werden Worte und Sätze missverständlich. :/

But thats not true at all. "Ei" is a different vowel than both "i" and "e". And its not true the other way around: "ie", eg in "nie" ("never"), is pronounced as a long "i", nog as "e"

​@@mariadaveyan1778 Logisch, es werden nur zwei ff gesprochen, also Schiffahrt, in einem durch. Es gibt in der Aussprache keine Trennung der f wie in Schiff-Fahrt. Das ist eine der unlogischen Akademikerregeln in der staatlichen Rechtschreibung. Sie wurde sogar vom Rechtschreibrat mathematisch begründet: 2+1=3. Für eine natürliche Sprache ist das Schwachsinn.

Seit der Reform der Reform darf man wieder beides. Sinn macht für mich auch eher Schiffahrt, weil man es auch so ausspricht. Bei Schrämmmaschine (hätte man vorher nur mit zwei m schreiben müssen) macht das schon eher Sinn.

Das sind die Momente, in denen ich froh bin, Deutsch als Muttersprache zu haben ;))

Eher Chinesisch als Japanisch. Das Wort Eichhörnchen hat nämlich Laute die im Japanischen Alphabet nicht vorhanden sind und die Japaner auch nicht erst aussprächen können

Ramiro Mayorga well both are technically correct. the throat-y kind (which sounds similar to the french /r/) is the one used in standard german. but the trill (so the rolled one) is used in some varieties/dialects of german, so it’s technically not wrong either. i hope this helped!

I'm just pointing out when Evan said that German number were like French where you say 4 and twenty, you don't do that in French because then you'd be saying 80.

Sorry , for all of y’all commenting that the sentence is a bit weird ; it might just be because I’m American and we use a bunch of slang rather than the proper British English you learn in german schools... ( I’m just guessing you’re learning because you’re using biG woRds ThaT IvE nEvEr lEarNt in aMericAN schOoLs 😅😪😂)

i feel like a lot of people struggle with the formal version of the word "Hello" in Russian which is "здравствуйте" (zdravstuite) but natives usually shorten it to "здрасьте" (zdraste) in verbal communication. i think Russian in general is harder for people whose native language is English or French since those languages are kind of soft and easier for Germans.

In Austria (Tyrol) we tease foreigner with the word "Oachkatzlschwoaf" which means squirrel tail.

Mein Lieblingswort ist immernoch Erdbeermarmeladenglasschraubdeckelverschluss....

My friends cat is called Zwetschge and I love making people who aren't native German speakers say this word. By this point this cat doesn't give a fuck anymore and just listens to everything that sounds remotely close to his name. Love this fat cat.

@@snowiiiiie Wir hatten mehrere Katzen, die auf ihren Namen gehört haben. Eine davon hat sogar auf "Nein" gehört und es unterlassen ihre Krallen auszufahren und erst einmal den Untergrund, in diesem Fall meinen Bauch damit zu bearbeiten. Die war auch sehr gesprächig und hat miaut, wenn sie etwas wollte oder man etwas von ihr wollte, womit sie nicht einverstanden war.

Ich spring mal auf die Katzendiskussion auf, bin nämlich etwas stolz auf mein Katerchen. Er hört auf seinen Namen (& diverse Spitznamen), auch wenn man seinen Namen in einem Gespräch sagt kuckt er einen an. Außerdem hört er auf "Nein", gerade wenn es darum geht, dass er gerade nicht mit durch die Tür kommen kann, er hört auf "komm" und vor allem auf "komm rein", wenn er draußen ist. Außerdem hört er auf "warte". Und wenn ich "Frühstück" oder "Abendessen" sage, versteht er mich auch :D PS ich kannte mal eine Katze die "Ente" hieß und dachte das ist mein Lieblingsname für eine Katze, aber Zwetschge toppt das, der Name ist genial.

Because most people who want to learn German focus on Germany. "Zwetschge" is more common in Austria. Germans call it "Pflaume"

You can combine any German nouns, so for me that doesn't count as a normal word. And you stress the "Do" in Donau when pronouncing it, the computer woman wasn't right. xD

Just discovered the video (yeah, I'm early, I know) and just had to tell you that I think you both did a great job! It was really fun to hear the little mnemonic aid about "ei" and "ie" and reminded me of learning english in school. ("He, she, it, das S muss mit" - reminding us to not forget the "s" while conjugation verbs, and "A kommt vor P" reminding us that AM is in the morning and PM comes afterwards.) Since a lot of German words are "zusammengesetzte Substantive" (= "composed nouns"), which basically means you just take two nouns (not always, since it can be verbs too) and smash them together, "Rührei" beasically composes of "rühren" (= to stir) and "Ei" (= egg). So it's just a stirred egg. That is also why there is a small pause between the first and the second part of the word. (not every time though - we Germans LOVE having exceptions to our language's rules) Great example for this would be "Schneeule" (= snow owl). It used to be written as Schneeeule (Schnee = snow, Eule = owl), but was basically dumbed down to just having two "e"s.. If you were to read it without the pause between the two words it would sound like Schnäule/Schneule (eu/äu both sound like "oy"). Just keep in mind that German is not a very fluid language like French oder Spanish, which is why our language can sound sudden and jerky. We enunciate each word and almost never bind them together.

I would say that German is one of the easiest languages for native speakers of English to pronounce accurately. The distribution of vowels and consonants is similar and both languages have consonant clusters which speakers of many other languages find difficult

Personally as a German narive speaker I think that most english native speaker have the biggest problem with the R because there is no word in their language wich pronounces the letter R as we do for other letters like ö there is an example ,that he gave with earn

So I just tore Streichholzschächtelschen apart, and it combines, in this order "streichen" in this case meaning to spread (because you want to spread the fire), "holz" meaning wood, the plural form of "schachteln" mean box, and the suffix "chen" making said box small. Makes sense to me.

I know that video was shot a long time ago, but I think it's really pretty cool that you learned German as an Englishman. You can do that right and, because I'm German myself.Luke did that very well and I think he looks similar to Ed Sheeran.I love Great Britain ❤️🇬🇧 Best regards, From Germany

It is funny that you don't know what to do with Swedish but you can conquer German like a boss. I'm an English speaker that spoke french in high school and picked up Swedish and Danish in college. Easiest languages, they come so naturally to me and I'm grateful because I love them.

Just listen to the new song of Stefanie Heinzmann. It's a brilliant song, but she totally can't pronounce the 'th'. selbst mich als Deutscher stört das gewaltig! Man kann sich einen amerkanischen oder englischen Dialekt zwar antrainieren, aber grundsätzlich hören wir Deutschen uns für native speaker erstmal komisch an.

I think yeah bc we spell out every single letter which is not really important. Why tf am I talking english with a german xD Aber ich denke schon es ist auffällig. Wir betonen halt so gut wie jeden Buchstaben. Es wird einem halt so beigebracht. (in den meisten Schulen gibt es nur Englisch Lehrer, die nicht wissen wie man die Wörter richtig ausspricht lol) Ich habe Glück. Meine Lehrerin hat uns das aussprechen von Wörtern ebenfalls beigebracht :) (Ich weiß sowas erwartet man auch von Englisch Lehrern, nur entspricht dies in den meisten Fällen nicht der Realität.) Als wir die Austauschschüler bei uns hatten (Aus der Niederlande) habe ich gemerkt wie schlecht die Kinder aus den Parallelklassen Englisch sprechen xD würde meine Lehrerin das hören, würde sie denen den Kopf abreißen haha. Ich frage mich echt wie die eine Unterhaltung führen konnten lol

Many Americans and English speakers find Germans trying to pronounce the word “squirrel” hilarious. There are certain words or phrases in every language that will trip up someone who speaks a different language. Something about all the consonant sounds in “squirrel” is very hard specifically for Germans to say.

Pretty good! But the myth seems to be wrong, ch isn't the hardest German sound for you, it's the r! You don't even try to do it correctly because it's so strange for you. We mostly use What is phonetically called a glottal vibrant. Look this up and try to pronounce it correctly. If you manage to do that, you are the king! If you manage to pronounce German Rs, it will be hard to tell that you are even American! 😉

Actually it's a voiced "uvular fricative". ^^ And don't forget the glottal stop! Rühr-ei. :) Like the first sound in every word starting with a vowel - but it's never written. (English&German) A sound as if a cat is starting to vomit. xD

German r's are easy compared to English r's. I've never figured out how to describe the latter in terms of the organs of speech used.

funny: squirrel (english word!) is considered a hard to pronounce word for germans

Yeah, every time I tried to say "squirrel" it sounded more like "scurrl" in the beginning.

its not that hard when you watched Harry potter if you know how to pronounce Professor quirrell you can pronouce squirrel

Yeah it is. As a native german speaker with an american exchange stundent, i can totally agree.

I have a hard time pronouncing squirrel and euro (in english)

yeah we can only say it like "squiwel" (i'm german)

Except in french we also say twenty - four (vingt quatre) xD

Let's say you are not pretty sure about how to count, I mean why is it at first douze, quatorze, quinze but then dix-sept etc. And that's not enough because everybody likes quatre-vingt dix-neuf and this. I often was pretty frustrated in my french lessons 😂

As a german speaking person i find this ridicilously amazing. Efforts on point and you're doing great... some words sounded like mandarin to me though :D very entertaining to hear these words read out loud from someone with a different language with no practice/learnung. Thumbs up
