man what a great list I've seen a lot of people make lists like this over the past few weeks but I think I like yours the most just because it feels so personal also some of my favorites are here as well Creed as a Rocky fan who grew up watching Rocky I love this movie so much, Spiderverse as a fan of any and all animation this movie just blew me away on every level nothing but pure joy to watch, I am one of the few weirdos that always loved Blade Runner since the time I saw it as a kid and only grew to love it more as I rewatched it growing up so when I heard of the sequel I thought there would be no way it would live up to the original for me but lo and behold I love it just as much if not more it is amazing, and Inception it is the film that made me realize how much I loved Nolan and reinvigorated my love of movies by showing me what film could really do when it pushed boundaries also it opened my eyes to how useless the academy was when they completely ignored it that year but hey that is another can of worms great list it was a pleasure to watch

Hi Walter! I enjoyed hearing your thoughts as always! It really does seem that our personal retrospective lists on the top films of the past decade were even more similar than I expected haha. 1. Inception 2. Logan 3. Blade Runner 2049 4. Joker 5. Inside Out 6. Captain America: The Winter Soldier 7. Toy Story 3 8. Spider-Man into the Spider-Verse 9. War for the Planet of the Apes 10. Gone Girl Honorable Mentions: Nightcrawler, The Fighter, Her, Lincoln, Uncut Gems, and almost every Marvel and Pixar film haha Though compiling and sorting an enumeration of only ten movies released within this timeframe necessitated some deliberation on my part, the choice for number one was immediate and unequivocal, considering it’s also one of my favorite films of all time! Inception, for me, further cemented Christopher Nolan’s ingenuity and preeminence as a writer and director, in addition to solidifying his ability to effectively navigate the delicate balance of comprehensibility and complexity in his storytelling. It’s an incredibly venerable and aspirational quality to be capable of meticulously detailing and clearly conveying the intricate mechanics of a uniquely imagined world through such consistently compelling and visually impressive means. Inception has irrevocably influenced me personally as a writer, and in most of my short stories I’ve attempted (unsuccessfully) to achieve this same sort of layered, individualized experience, whereby the story itself is enjoyable on a surface level and offers a satisfactory conclusion to its primary arc, while simultaneously providing subtle details and information that encourage deeper theorization and discussion. It certainly is the testament to its indelible impact that people have spent years debating the ending or outlining accurate recreations of the dreamscapes and their associated, relativistic flows of time. I actually remember back when you and Jim first offered your perspectives on the original Blade Runner and its sequel, which, in many ways, happened to be quite reflective of my own opinions at the time. In general, I’ll still assert that Blade Runner 2049 demonstrates greater structural and tonal similarities with other films in the investigatory, noir genre than its predecessor, and more deftly explores the emotionally dense themes of societal inequity, discrimination, the concept of individual purpose or significance, economic stratification, love, and the nebulousness surrounding the query of what truly defines or constitutes humanity. With respect to the aesthetic design and presentation, Blade Runner 2049 cleverly augments its depiction of the pronounced income disparity characterizing its dystopian world by contrasting the environmental set-pieces used for the interior of the Wallace Corporation and the city which encircles it. Essentially, the sonorous vivacity of the grim, crowded city dissipates into impotent silence inside the austere, minimalistic halls of Wallace’s prodigious headquarters, which, in their empty sterility, could perhaps be symbolic for the persistent infertility that Wallace has failed to eradicate from his replicants. Regardless, the drab atmosphere, dynamic and scintillating cinematography, and vibrant palette of complementary hues coalesce into what I consider to be one of the most visually stunning films I’ve seen over the last decade. Since its initial release, Inside Out has remained the Pixar film which most profoundly resonates with my personal experiences growing up. Perhaps it’s simply attributable to the inexplicably narrow breadth of movies I’ve seen throughout my life, however, Inside Out represents the first instance in which I finally witnessed a pre-teen girl depicted with such depth and variability in her personality and interests, in contrast to the often stereotypical, dichotomous characterizations that inaccurately write young girls as either ultra-feminine or tomboys. It was admittedly hard for me not to internalize this damaging and shallow perspective of girls throughout many years of my life, so watching a protagonist onscreen who actually reminded me of myself at that age was quite overwhelming. The paramount significance of representation and diversity in films and storytelling cannot be overstated! Additionally, as with most Pixar films, Inside Out is exceptionally adept at showcasing a broad expanse of differing emotional tones that are accessible and evocative to the entirety of its intended audience. Beneath the veneer of its simple, comprehensible tale, Inside Out deftly discusses a few serious themes and lessons appertaining to the subject of emotional expression that adults, as well as children, certainly benefit from seeing anatomized onscreen. To further elaborate, when the stressor of moving is foisted upon adolescent Riley, her first inclination is to reject or suppress the entirely justifiable, “negative” feelings of anguish and trepidation that have naturally precipitated from her current circumstances. Riley’s behaviors are completely innocent and understandable; she’s a caring girl who, out of awareness and sympathy for her parents, tries desperately to avoid compounding their anxieties by burdening them with her own. Therefore, she adopts a fragile façade of performative happiness, which, despite its falsity, still masquerades as maturity and resilience on her part. This sort of method to contend with inner suffering is usually unsustainable, and the swelling tempest of warring emotions often surges forth unsuspectingly and uncontrollably upon even the slightest of instigations. In Riley’s case, for instance, her state grows more progressively mercurial as she begins to withdraw from social relationships with friends and family, while uncharacteristic bouts of anger suddenly punctuate tense moments. The eventual culmination of Riley’s arc brilliantly solidified the poignancy and weight of Inside Out’s predominant themes, namely through the validation and support she receives from her parents after tearfully admitting her true emotional turmoil. Given the unfortunately prevalent and damaging belief that stoicism is synonymous with strength and seeking help is akin to personal failure, it can be considered an incredibly commendable and important decision on Pixar’s part to instead impress the necessity of acknowledging, discussing, and developing salubrious coping mechanisms to handle the oscillatory emotions that life will inevitably incur. I know I undoubtedly missed out on numerous celebrated films from these past ten years, but I really have made strides in finally setting aside time to watch many of the older, classic movies that I had never seen before. I would actually say that some of the most memorable and influential film experiences I had over this decade were of this nature, and, in particular, Citizen Kane, Ed Wood, Aliens, Shawshank Redemption, and Goodfellas would probably top that list! I still have quite a bit to catch up on though haha
