Two notes: First, not liking children and not wanting children of your own are two very different things. It sounds like he enjoyed entertaining kids but didn't want the burden of being a parent, which is understandable. Not everyone is cut out for parenthood, and it's a massive responsibility. Second, I feel like you left out one of the most tragic parts of his wife's suicide note. She asked him to lie about her death and the affair so it wouldn't hurt the kids who looked up to him. She told him he could just say that the illness wore her down.

Most of this stuff doesn't really surprise me all that much, in fact, most of these facts makes the guy himself more fascinating to me (although his use of the N word that one time and the story about his love affair were quite shockers). Also, I'm not surprised that he used to be racially insensitive because let's face it, most artists like him (especially cartoonists) were racially insensitive back in the day, even Walt Disney, yet we still respect the hell out of them. Edit: And on top of that, at least he seemingly learned from these mistakes.

He probably regretted a lot of his past thoughts and action, and I find that inspiring. edit two years after comment: looking back on this comment, I feel like I was in denial about the shitty things he did because he was a childhood hero of mine and I remember reading about him as a kid and really inspired me to draw and be creative, and he was a real inspiration to me growing up. But, in retrospect, he really should be held accountable for his shitty behavior and he really was a flawed, bitter and in some ways immoral man. So....from what I gather from this video, Dr. Seuss was a man of his time and as flawed and imperfect as the rest of us. And yet so many of the people in this thread are screaming down from their "moral highground" about what a terrible person the guy was. Seriously? For facts ten to two, none of that was in anyway surprising or even offensive. Pretty much everyone was racist to some extent back then, and the war propaganda was run of the mill during that time as well. As for the racey images, not liking children, etc; I'm not even going to waste my time arguing against points like those being used as ammunition against his character. It's not fair to hold the people of then to our standards today. By all rights, in the time that he lived, he was an honest, patriotic man with his own unique, quirks. The same as anyone. And as for the final one, his affair. That's the only one I'm willing to given *any* ground for. He cheated on his wife of many decades during terminal illness. There's very little anyone could say to defend those kinds of actions. With that said, is this really worth crucifying the man over? Looked at with some level of nuance, his affair was hardly some uncaring fling he just decided to have because he didn't love his wife. From everything available, it's pretty clear he cheated during the one of the hardest times of his life: taking care of his ailing wife. Anyone who's cared for a loved one knows intimately that this can be incredibly draining, both emotionally and physically. It's no surprise that eventually he found himself falling prey to another woman. Of course, as I said, this doesn't even *slightly* excuse him, but some of you people are all but demonizing Dr. Seuss for mistakes many of you may have made in similar circumstances. One mistake shouldn't be used as a weapon to ruin and demolish the entirety of a person's accomplishments or be used to represent their whole character.

And who cares if he didn’t want kids. When I was little the “sneetches” although one of my favorites, I didn’t understand it was about racism. The Lorax probably had the biggest impact on me.

  • @kkitao217

I happen to be reading a biography of Theodore Geisel right now. He and his first wife very much wanted children, and it was painful to them that they were not able to have any. His often repeated statement that others could have the children and he would write for them was a flip way of responding to questions about having children while covering up that pain. He commented on different occasions that he didn’t feel a particular connection to children. Part of the reason he got into writing children’s books was that it didn’t violate his contract with Standard Oil, as many other kinds of writing would have. But he doesn’t seem to have particularly disliked children.

I think "Didn't like kids" is simplifying him too much. I'd say he wasn't that interested in people in general, kids or adults - by most accounts he liked to keep to himself and some close friends. That's a little different from hating children. He wrote very eloquently about why he respected children's minds more than most adults he knew. If you watch his underrated feature film The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T you'll see how much respect and understanding he had of children's minds.
