Confused Reviews - Episode 45 - Top 10 Dukes of Hazzard Episodes
he Dukes of Hazzard is an American action comedy TV series created by Gy Waldron, that was aired on CBS from January 26, 1979, to February 8, 1985. The show aired for 147 episodes spanning seven seasons. It was consistently among the top-rated television series in the late 1970s (at one point, ranking second only to Dallas, which immediately followed the show on CBS's Friday night schedule).
The show is a retelling of the English folk tale Robin Hood and features two young male cousins, Bo and Luke Duke, who live in rural Georgia and are on probation for moonshine-running. Probation prevents the "Duke Boys" from owning guns and the duo are armed with bows and arrows and clever plans to outwit a corrupt sheriff and greedy rich "city slickers." Their female cousin Daisy Duke, and other family (such as patriarch Uncle Jesse), live in a secluded country home in the woods where they plan various escapades to expose and evade county commissioner Boss Hogg and law officer Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane. The "Duke Boys" drive a customized 1969 Dodge Charger nicknamed the General Lee, which became a symbol of the show.
The series was also inspired by the 1975 film Moonrunners, about a bootlegger family, which was written and directed by Waldron and had many identical or similar character names and concepts. The show was the basis for a film of the same title in 2005.

There is an episode where Boss hogg is kidnapped and Roscoe gets onto the cb and begs the dukes to save his friend. It's a very sweet moment, it shows the regard that Roscoe has for Hogg. Its a nice episode worthy of mention.

I love how in the Cale Yarborough episode that they briefly mentioned at the end of the episode that Cale Yarborough was headed to Hickory to race at Hickory Motor Speedway since Hickory,North Carolina is my hometown and was the city that actor James Best who portrayed Sheriff Roscoe lived in for the last few years of his life. Interesting side note he died at Catawba Memorial Hospital where I was employed at the time.

I have forgotten a lot of the episodes and didn't watch the whole series. But some of the favourites I remember: The Mean Green Machine stories, "A Baby for the Dukes", "Nothin' but the Truth" (one of the funniest), "The Haunting of JD Hogg", "Boss Behind Bars", "Birds Gotta Fly" and "Mrs Daisy Hogg". My favourite character was the narrator - I loved his voice, style of narration and humour - and it was the real reason I started watching the series.

Confused Reviews - Great video. I've only just discovered your great channel when actually searching for "Top 10 Dukes Episodes" lists, which oddly seem quite rare on KZread. I'm a lifelong Dukes fan (a British one at that), it rivals 'The A-Team' as my all-time favourite TV show. It's a shame it's been tarnished slightly by the whole confederate flag debate in recent years (I'm not gonna wade into that, but in terms of Dukes it always simply reflected Southern heritage and rebellion against "The System"). For a year or so now I've been planning my own "Top 11 Episodes" channel of various 1980s TV series; I've even scripted the first few, just need to narrate and edit the damned things! Either way was fascinating comparing my own Top 11 list with your own selection, as people's tastes of favourite DOH episodes often vary considerably. If you're bothered at all, here's my take on each of your ten selected episodes: 10. "The Ghost of General Lee" A very good episode, one that generally ranks in a similar slot on my own Top 11 list. Two points have always stopped it ranking higher for me - even though this is still the earlier, slightly harsher Boss Hogg, I always felt uncomfortable that within seconds of learning of the Duke Boys "deaths" he was planning to frame them for a crime (a season or two later and Boss would have been in deep remorse to ever even consider doing this; in fact within a couple of seasons he would sometimes abort his schemes if he even thought it endangered anyone); and the sudden switch from drama into the comedy-based 'ghost car' finale jars a bit. But still a strong episode thanks to it's dramatic moments. 9. "Daisy's Song" An excellent second episode - and one particularly of note to me in that, this was the earliest Dukes episode I had for several years (when satellite channel Sky One re-ran the series here in the UK in the early 1990s, I saw but wasn't able to record the first episode) and so re-watched it MANY times. I love the more down-to-earth elements of this (and the other first five) story over some of the more fantastical and even slightly childish later stories, and - as with several of the stronger guest villains - I always thought it was a shame record pirate Starr and henchman Jojo never made a return appearance in Hazzard as they were very enjoyable villains and deserved to be brought back. 8. "Ten Million Dollar Sheriff" A reasonable two-hour / two-parter, though it wouldn't make my own top episodes list. It has a decent story but I do find it too padded out, particularly in the first part, with too many "comedy shenanigans" of Boss and Rosco switching roles (which even within the "flexible reality" of the series, seems to go against too much of things we've seen from Boss in other episode), including the drawn out gambling sequences, which I never really warmed to. It is a decent story, but would have worked far better if condensed down to a single-length episode and some of the more unnecessary "comedy" elements skipped. 9. "Carnival of Thrills" Arguably the best of the show's three two-hours/two-parters, and one which I like more than "Ten Million Dollar Sheriff". It's nice that it plays on some of the more dramatic elements, with comedy-double-act (much as I love them) Boss and Rosco actually taking a back seat for much of this one. Interesting that it is, actually, the final story filmed for the second season (and there's a number of tell-tale signs of it's second season origins) and it was originally shown away ahead of the third season, but nowadays is generally considered the third season opener. Not a series favourite of mine (maybe still a bit too drawn out) but one I do like. 8. "Too Many Roscos" The "same actor, different role" (or indeed "a character suffers a sudden change of personality") stories were a very mixed bag for me. I much preferred more adventure-based episodes with guest villains; the dual-role/personality change stories did stretch the belief slightly (not that Dukes was ever much based in reality!) and I always found them harder to fully buy into. But I'd agree that "Baa, Baa White Sheep" and "Too Many Roscos" rank amongst the best of those types of episodes. "White Sheep" actually suffers in my view in that it feels incomplete - Bo is completely absent, as is (less importantly) Cletus. It was actually the first episode to be filmed for the third season, and it's like the full cast wasn't back from vacation yet. "Too Many Roscos" is a very strong episode; It wouldn't make my own top ten but it is a great showcase for James Best. 7. "Jude Emery" An interesting choice for a Top 10 list. I like "Jude Emery" in principal (one of several proposed second season spin-off pilots, the other being "Mason Dixon's Girls" and, in some form, "Southern Comfurts"). In fact, I go through phases of REALLY liking it. The one thing that stops it being a solid favourite in my book: Sheriff Grady Bird. I'm kinda odd in that if a major cast member if missing or replaced then it always marks an episode down a notch in my book, and a number of second season episodes suffer with both Rosco or Cooter replacements (oddly I'm far more forgiving with Coy and Vance episodes, in that we at least knew they'd be there each week). Although producers had seemingly settled on Dick Sergeant a being the regular Sheriff, with him appearing in TWO episodes, and even full cast publicity shots with him in, reportedly he wasn't too popular with some members of the cast which is why he was in turn again replaced with James Hampton (Sheriff Buster Moon) before Best finally returned. Beyond the Grady Bird fiasco, this is a decent episode, and I always like episodes that do something a bit different, and indeed ones that give us very different and interesting villains to the regular "generic bad guy duo of the week" which was seen in many other episodes. It was originally devised in it's early stages as a two-hour outing, and I think would have fared better as that, as the plot's conclusion does feel a bit rushed. 4. "Welcome Back, Bo 'N' Luke" Good episode in that it finally brings back the original Duke boys to take over from lookalike replacements Coy and Vance (who, I have to say, I never out-and-out HATED, and some episode plots with them in were reasonable), but it basically is a standard Dukes episode (albeit a good one) with the return of Bo and Luke and the departure of Coy and Vance awkwardly tacked on to the first few minutes, and by the end of the episode playing like the whole cast change thing never even happened. I think everyone, even Coy and Vance haters, would have at least liked to have seen a proper episode where the two pairs of Duke boys team up to stop a particularly severe plot by Boss Hogg or whatever, but the fact they are gone and forgotten by the first ad break feels so disappointing. Tom Wopat and John Schneider had already completed one episode after their return to the series ("Big Brothers Duke", the next to be broadcast), so you'd think the writers could have had time to at least cobble something together for the four of them. Decent but more for novelty value in my book. 3. "Happy Birthday General Lee" This seems to be a series favourite with many fans. I guess I vaguely like it... but in a more novelty kinda way again. It comes at the start of the seventh season, where the series was really on it's last legs, and is the season I consider to be the weakest of the show's run, with many of the show's weakest episodes and the feel that much of the cast and crew (and the writers) didn't really have their heart in things any more. It's interesting to see a flashback episode with everyone a bit younger (and, naturally, no mention of Coy and Vance even though elsewhere in the series it was indicated they would have lived on the farm at this point) and to see how the Dukes acquired the General Lee, but... I dunno... it's too much in the show's flimsy and almost childish late days to make my top ten. There are one or two vague touches to the very early episodes (such as Uncle Jesse's original hat), but far too much conflicting with what we saw in those earliest first season episodes, even beyond (understandably) overlooking the change of filming location. Not an episode that stands out as a particular favourite with me I'm afraid. 2. "One Armed Bandits" The very first episode, and a classic. The first thing that stands out, of course, is the contrast in tone from which the show would evolve into. Far more gritty and serious and adult feeling. And in a way, I love that and wish this had continued further into the series. The plot sums up the "Modern day Robin Hoods" of the title song, with Bo and Luke stealing Sheriff Rosco's illegal slot machines (interesting that Rosco seems to be behind most of the plot, acting only as a proxy to Boss Hogg) and giving the money to the struggling orphanage. Plus one of the General's most iconic jumps (the first ever filmed) and featured in most versions of the opening credits. In my top three favourite episodes. 1. "Dukes Meet Cale Yarborough" A very interesting choice. An episode that sat on various incarnations of my "top ten episodes" list through the years; one that's been nudged off in recent years but is still a great instalment. Being a Brit, the name Cale Yarborough wasn't particularly recognised here, but none-the-less an extremely enjoyable tale. The Simon Brothers are great as the "generic villains of the week", and of course the highlight is the three General Lees (a concept that was recycled, with Santa Clauses, in the third season episode "The Great Santa Claus Chase"). The final jump is very memorable, too (kind of makes up for the shameless recycling of one of the show's greatest jumps, from season one's "Double Sting"). An episode I like a lot and may have to go back and revisit. ...Well, mini-essay on each of those there. I really should start that damned channel some year soon! :)

I picked it up a couple of days ago due to not being able to get S7 as that was always sold out or I started finding it being sold with S5 and 6 together and a couple of disks in S2 not working anymore. I have to say this is a really awesome list you made. I like how you included an episode from each season. I’m kinda confused why you didn’t add honorable mentions to the list, but oh well. Speaking of the episodes on your list, here are my thoughts on them: The Ghost of the General Lee A pretty good episode that features a dark topic. I really like the idea of having Rosco and the others think that Bo and Luke are gone after the crash. Also, the chase scene with the General Lee during the middle has me in stitches. Even the scene when Jesse is thrilled to see the boys safe and alive, to then becoming furious when they asked who died makes me laugh. I will have to say the only nitpick is the visuals in this episode. The camera shots look pretty blurry and the cars and human costumes don’t really stand out. I mean, the Georgia filmed episode did have some good camera work, but this episode has the most ugly visuals of the show. But regardless, it’s still a great episode. 8/10 Daisy’s Song: A personal favorite episode of season 1 and for the first episode where Daisy is the main character. I really love how this episode introduces the iconic hood slide gag. Fun fact: Tom Wopat actually attempted to jump over the hood, but his feet slipped, which made him slide at about a 45-degree angle. Also, the shots they got of the house with the pool are really good and they way they destroy the center was just phenomenal. It’s also great seeing Daisy getting a happy ending. 9/10 10 Million Dollar Sheriff: This is my favorite of the Two-Part episodes of the show. I love the idea of Rosco becoming the richest man in Hazzard and him getting a Hunter to go to get the Duke Boys. Also, the ending with the first part where Jesse has a nasty fall makes us wonder what will happen to him. Also, the Rolls Royce car that Rosco has is really cool by design and color. So while most people like Carnival of Thrills two parter the most, this is the one I like the most. 10/10. Carnival of Thrills: An amazing start to the 3rd season. This is probably the first time we have Bo and Luke fighting together, even though my favorite episode of them getting into a feud is Twin Trouble. The fighting scene is pretty crazy. Also, the part when Bo is about to do the jump, it really makes you wonder if he can achieve it. But with Luke’s help after reconciling with Bo, they manage to pull off the stunt. For me, this is in 2nd place for the Two-Parter episodes. 9/10 Too Many Roscos: I really like how this is like The Ghost of the General Lee but in reverse. I really love how this and Baa, Baa, White Sheep are the two ones where actors who play the two guys who the Dukes don’t really like (more so with Boss) play doubles. For one minor nitpick, is the ending where Rosco gives Bo and Luke a speeding ticket. I mean, I thought that plot was already done with and Rosco not giving the boys a ticket would have made for a better ending. But overall, I really like this episode. 8.5/10. Jude Emery: This is probably the best of the episode where James Best didn’t perform in. I was a little nervous about watching an episode without James Best, but after watching this one, I say this is a pretty good episode. I like the idea of a music bounty hunter coming to find a guy named after a reptile. I think this is definitely the best episode with Dick Sargent. 8/10. Welcome Back, Bo ‘n’ Luke: This is definitely the best episode of Season 5. Season 5 is definitely the weakest of the show because of Coy and Vance. I also don’t hate them, but I am glad that Bo and Luke came back. I do like how the four Dukes got to spend some time together, even though I wish they could have been together for the entire episode. As for Cooter, I really like how he’s handled in this episode, for how he feels like he’s responsible for the improper repairs, only for the Dukes to make the real discovery and find out he’s not responsible. So while Season 5 is the weakest of the show, this is definitely the best of Season 5, not to mention my favorite of Season 5 and one of my favorites. 9.5/10! Happy Birthday, General Lee: Who doesn’t love this episode? This is definitely without a doubt a fan favorite for a lot of Dukes of Hazzard fans and it shows why. This is a legendary episode as it shows how the General Lee came to be and how the Duke Boys got it. I like how even though the first 5 episodes were filmed in Georgia, they managed to film it in California as they had more budget to work there compared to what they had in Georgia. Also, I agree that this Dukes of Hazzard Prequel is definitely the Dukes of Hazzard: The Beginnings done right. Absolutely my favorite Season 7 episode! 10/10! One Armed Bandits: Who also doesn’t love this episode? This is a fantastic why to start of the show. Getting a great introduction to the characters and shows us what’s about to come for the next episodes. The shots, the music, everything in this episode is amazing. Definitely my favorite episode of Season 1 and the best of the Georgia filmed episodes. 10/10! Dukes meet Cale Yarborough: Another favorite episode of mine with a great guest star who is a real NASCAR driver. The racers, action and humor in this are all very well done. This is also probably my favorite Season 2 episode. But I’ll have to watch the rest of Season 2 before I change my mind. Anyway, I give this episode 10/10! Also, here’s my favorite episode of each season. Season 1: One Armed Bandits Season 2: Dukes meet Cale Yarborough Season 3: The Canterbury Crock Season 4: Miz Tisdale on the Lam Season 5: Welcome Back, Bo ‘n’ Luke Season 6: Brotherly Love Season 7: Happy Birthday, General Lee

Great review man. I got introduced to The Dukes Of Hazzard, playing the video games. Even if you don't play video games, it would be great to see your opinion on the video games of The Dukes Of Hazzard (Racing For Home, Daisy Dukes It Out, and Return Of The General Lee). It might be weird going from the show to a video game but, I do believe the video game versions did a better job with the presentation of the show compare to the movie. As a bonus, you should see the movies ThunderRoad 1958 and Moonrunners 1975. Supposedly, the movie Moonrunners, was the inspiration for the making of The Dukes Of Hazzard.

The Hazzard car race episode where Roscoe was using NO2 booster to go faster and Luke was racing in place of Cooter. Every other car crashed, including the token bad guys (“You ok??? No I died!”), leaving only Bo, Luke, and Roscoe( after his rough start when he took out the grandstand and sending Boss Hogg to the ground). Bo’s General’s transmission failed..., Luke blew his engine. Roscoe hit the booster and instead of jumping air-born over the finish line, ended up hitting Luke back into motion like a billiard ball. Bo got his car going in reverse at the same time, ending up in the Duke Boys in a tie! The whole race finale was hilarious....Roscoe was over the top! 😆😆😆😆 That was my favorite episode. Other good episodes... *Boss Hogg mistakenly told he had two weeks to live. *Boss accidentally gets a shot of truth serum.(“Oh my...what a homely baby!”) *Lulu Hogg gets kidnapped (The wild General Lee ride with her driving) *Enos gets the job in Los Angeles after catching hard core criminals *Dukes help bride to be hiding from her controlling father (Goodbye Yellow Roadrunner, Hello Dixie Jeep)

@@ConfusedReviews Yeah, really loved the first 5 that were actually shot in Georgia. It gave the show a more authentic feel. I like episodes from all seasons but Season 1 felt the least formulaic and rooted more in the real world. But with that said, I also really enjoy Season 4 which has a lot of cookie cutter plots lol. Really love Diamonds in the Rough, Coltrane vs. Duke, Hughie Hogg Strikes Again, and Shine On, Hazzard Moon. And Too Many Roscoes is definitely a strong later-seasons episode (one of my favorites since I was little)

As I mention in every Dukes video - I’m from Michigan - so I have nearly no idea what “authentic” Georgia looks or feels like. But even as a kid I recognized the more realistic vibe certain episodes had. …and yeah season 4 rocks also.

@@ConfusedReviews I can't put my finger on it (and maybe you would know and could shed some light on it), but there seems to be some sort of jump in production quality between seasons 3 and 4. I don't know anything about filmmaking or video, but the shots seem closer and not as far away. And I feel like they're working with more interesting camera angles or something. And Season 4 feels like its much better written and less stock than Seasons 2 and 3. idk if any of what I'm saying makes sense but I see some sort of subtle difference going from Season 3 to 4.

Couldn’t agree more. It feels lived-in and real, plus they weren’t keeping the plots streamlined and for the whole family. But that’s just a product of TV at the time I suppose.

@@ConfusedReviews From what I've heard, the cast didn't like the move to California either. James Best especially loved filming in Georgia, and referred to LA as a cesspool. I heard he and Ben Jones both tried to get the network to relocate the show to Georgia at one point, but obviously they weren't successful. I'm sure it was more economical to shoot in California, but the show lost its authentic lived-in feel. Just goes to show the emphasis is on business when it comes to show business.

The one with the alien visitor was awful, as was the one where Bo, Luke, Boss and Roscoe were captured by a corrupt boss in another county and put in a work detention camp....unwatchable. Didn’t care for the Huey Hogg episodes, and the last episode where Boss went missing and Roscoe thought it was his fault because he screwed up his magic act....they could have had a proper finale.

I think coy and Vance did get shafted . I think the show creators could have took a huge negative and turned it into a positive . They should have kept coy and Vance on , After bo and Luke returned. Then coy and Vance side with boss Hogg out of jealousy , resentment or whatever. Boss gets them their own car to rival the General . Then when the Dukes have a show down , bo and Luke win out by barely the skin of their teeth. Then the last season episode they are on can be a redemption tyke storyline where coy and Vance realize the error of their ways . Just sadly the writing and long term storytelling was not breaking bad or sons of anarchy levels LOL. With that said , still a great show.

This was excellent. Really never considered keeping them on longer than Bo & Luke’s return, but this would have wound up being a great way to win back viewers, too. Imagine the promo ad: “Tonight, will the Dukes of Hazzard win it all? But which set of cousins?”
