I'm all for opinions, but this list is bad. Simply because Sera is on this and not Alistair. Alistair is one of the most dynamic and interesting characters in the series. As they described with Morrigan, he is also very "layered." He changes depending on gender as well. He is also not the typical bro character like Varric who is practically blindly loyal to you in DA2 (and to some extent DAI) regardless of what you do. Alistair will disapprove, call you out, and can outright leave you if your choices are egregious enough. But if you get along with him, he's extremely funny and laid back. But when the time calls for it, he can be serious, romantic, and responsible. Seriously, Alistair should have been number 1. The list was ok minus Sera and Varric being at number 1. Varric is likable but extremely over-rated. Also Solas as a dishonorable mention is just.... no.

1. Cullen should've been higher. Like, way higher. 2. Qun is pronounced "kyuun"... not "cuhn" 3. Solas is awesome, even if he broke my Inquisitor's heart. 4. I can't believe Alistair is an honorable mention but Sera's on the list. Higher than Cullen no less!

Dorian is by far my #1, next to Cole and many others. His entire development is more uniqe in my opinion and his story is more based around family than the others, and may help those who are struggling to be who they are, as in liking either the same or both genders. And he's very charismatic and witty, which I love. I can go on and on (late to the party, I know)

Cassandra is a wonderfully nuanced & deeply layered character. I originally started romancing her because I felt she was the better of two disappointing choices (I was also wrong about Josephine) & I truly fell in love with her. Some of my favorite parts was when she’d crack a small smile, like when you dance with her at the Winter Palace, & when you’d see genuine warmth on her face.

No Alistair, no list I'm afraid. Honestly would have been a really good list too. Though Dorian would have been much higher up for me (I mean he's such a big deal representation wise and he easily has one of the best romances), and I think hating on Solas is definitely a horde mentality, I didn't mind him too much. At all. But I do love Varric, Sera and Iron Bull (have no care for Leliana though.) And Morrigan was a pretty good pick but again, not a favourite of mine. Cullen would definitely've been lower down the list for me as well.

Loyal to the CUN??? No Alistair? Krem? Oghren? Justice? Zevran didn't actually get on???? LOGHAIN?! Flemeth, Merrill, Fenris? Nathaniel? The Architect? Anders was BOSS in Awakening [though DAII not so much]... Sten was just great and hilarious at times. You just need more than ten, there are so many great characters. Was this list even made by someone who plays the game? Alistair is number one for pretty much everybody, maybe Morrigan. Worst companions characters: Bethany/Carver (boring af), Anders in DAII (whiner), Aveline was fine but just... boring. No personality or depth, the same goes for Sebastian. As for Inquisition, I'd say Vivienne is the weakest. Though a strong person and incredible cool, she didn't seem to have much to her. You don't get to see the hidden side of her. This may be because of the lack of a romance option, but Varric and Cole do not have this problem. Inquisition has the most solid companion list, but Origins had the BEST and most iconic companions and characters. This list really doesn't cover Origins enough, and did even MENTION Awakening, which is the best Dragon Age DLC.. And I'm sorry, but, (more personal opinion than anything) Isabela had the depth of a damp paper towel. She's fun and gorgeous but ultimately empty. Sexy doesn't have to mean shallow - look at Morrigan or Dorian. Oh, and Dorian needs to be WAY higher on this list if only for that charm tho.

Why is Solas a dishonorable mention? He's easily one of the most interesting characters in the series. He's someone we can all relate to, he made a mistake that he regrets and is trying to fix it. He has severe depression, he's an artist, a scholar, and one of the most powerful mages to ever exist. Everyone likes to shit on him for the end of his romance, but that only makes him more real. He feels like he doesn't deserve the Inquisitor, and that adds to the tragedy of his story. Not only that, but he's the first Dragon Age villain to know that what he's doing is wrong. He doesn't really want to bring back the Ancient Elves, he doesn't want to destroy Thedas, he even tells the Inquisitor that he wants to be proven wrong, he just has no idea what else he can do but die with the rest of his people. His whole life has been spent desperately trying to be a hero, and once he gets that chance with the Inquisition, he throws it away because he's blinded by his own self-loathing. If that isn't a Shakespearean tragedy, I don't know what is.

Talk to everyone, oh she was made Divine, cool. Go up to my room, sweet there's my love interest. Claudia Black is narrating the epilogue...wait what's this? Solas is the Dread Wolf? He was working for Flemeth? Whoa dude did he just kill her?" "Alright let deal with this Qun captain. Wait why are they all frozen? She's raging at being used...dude Solas! He was behind all this. What he wants to do will end Thedas. Damn it he took The Mark. Now we have to either let him infiltrate The Inquisition or let him win." Great character, great story, but that traitor moment and gut punch are why he's here.

If there's one thing I learned from high school English it's that obsessing over people from the past kills gatsby and several other people. It'll only turn out worse for Solas and the innocents he takes down with him in this thoughtless crusade. If I could talk to Solas I'd say "What is done is done. Live with the mistake and move on, don't let others suffer for YOUR misdeeds." Then I'd kick him in the nuts.

Cortez is not a companion (or ME's equivalent: a squadmate), he's pretty much a static NPC on the Normandy. That's the main difference.

For the most the part people don't seem to like him because he plans to destroy the world and therefore without a doubt he must be evil even though that is too simple of a way when looking at the entire situation and admittedly at times he can be arrogant especially when you're disapproval with him is low at the end of tresspasser. However, when looking at specific dialogue, codex, and just the actual person Solas is supposed to be he by far one of the most interesting characters to have existed in the series. There's also the fact people see him as a racist for trying to bring back the Ancient Elves and that comment he makes of walking through a world of tranquil, but again that's too simple of way when looking at those actions.

Well Solas falls under the broody elf romantic plot but if you spent time falling in love with how deep his character is and how beautiful he is he becomes a sweet and caring person but the up and vanishing at the end and you are no longer able to play him in the post game well there goes my epic gear that Dorian can use but even when your at the end with him he’s like “I love you but I must do this.” Like no you don’t need to do this and considering my last broody elf romance was beautiful and loving I can’t forgive Solas for breaking my trust

While that is an excellent point (I'm late to the party) we also don't know why he left. He may have had a very good reason to, one that may have been difficult to make even for him, but may have been for a good cause, as in helping those he love, either former or latter. As he says himself, "Sometimes to achieve the world one desires, one must take regrettable measures." But it could also be the case that he thinks it's for good, when it really hurts the world more. Hopefully we'll find out when the fourth game in the Dragon Age series comes out.

IMO Origins is the best and had the best characters Awakening also had really awesome characters as well.

My ideal Origins party: Alistair, Morrigan, Zevran (if Warden is not a rogue) and Dog. The banters are amazing. If you have Extra Dog Slot installed I recommend the 3 mages build (you, Morrigan, Wynne, anyone else you like--you will steamroll everyone). Sten's banters are also surprisingly charming, especially alongside Leliana. (There are kittens.) And having Sten and Dog save you from Fort Drakon is to die for. For me, it's less about individual characters than how they interact, with you and one another. The character interaction in DA2 left me cold, and I know I'm not the only one that liked Solas.

Having Morrigan and Alistair in the party at the same time was always good for banter, thought he should have made the top 10.

Origins, inquisition, then dragon age 2.

I would give DAO and DAI both a 10 or a 9 out of 10, DA2 It had a weaker story but I thought it was a good game, just not as epic DAO and DAI. I would give DA2 a 7 out of 10

I agree I think he deserved to have a honorable mention. Some people may think he's boring, but he's just stern and serious. The guy holds himself to a higher code, you kinda have to respect that. How many silent warriors do you know out there, how fights for a higher calling than themselves? Even though he was serious, stern and quiet, you got a sensed this character was layered, and wasn't going to open up more about himself unless he trusted you. The character, Sten in my opinion, was great. I don't like top ten list for DA Characters, mainly because people have their own preferences, neither one is better than the other, they are simply different, each possessing their own strengths, weaknesses, and personalities that made them distinctive. It really depends on the player, not everyone is going to like Sten or Alistair, or Leliana, and so forth. I don't think Varic is all that exciting, always thought he was just ok as a character, I'm assuming someone at Mojo really like Varic.

Here is my personal list: 1-Varric 2-Morringan 3-Dorian 4-Iron Bull 5-Shale 6-Leliana (Didn't like her in Origins but love her in Inquisition) 7-Alistair 8-Cassandra 9-Ogrhen 10-Isabella Bioware is amazing when it comes to creating interesting characters. Of course not all of them are amazing, I could easily make a list of the 10 worst DA characters too and Sera would be number btw.

I was disappointed in iron bull between the tal vashoth mercenary in Inquisition's multiplayer and bull having such a big personality I felt there weren't enough real zealous qunari like the arishok or Sten it felt like they ruined the qun a bit by making them boring bad guys in the trespasser dlc and not having any real qunari allies

Makes sense,y'know. a) Inquisition has more characters. b) Better fleshed out, too. Simply because there is just...more focus on that sort of thing. It also greatly improves the returning ones. I never cared much for Leliana in Origins, but after DAI she's definitely become a fave. Anyway, as long as Dorian, Shale and Varric are on the list, I'm happy. (I do think, though, that Alistair only getting an honourable mention is a crime - and while I *love* Varric *to bits*, I don't think he deserves to be #1. But that's what these lists are for - to have people disagree with them. :-))

Then we must have been playing a different game. :-) I don't care that much for DAO Leliana and I've never cared about Sten at all, but the rest of them are great. Alistair, Zevran, Morrigan (though it took time to warm up to HER), Wynne, Shale, Tickles (that would be the dog) and even Oghren were all great.

I suppose I am a fan of mostly unmentioned companions. I absolutely adored Wynne, Oghren, and Sten from the first installment. Anders, Aveline and Varric take the cake for DA 2. And as for the third? Varric (yet again), Blackwall and Cole. And I know a lot of folks out there despise Anders, but so far he has been my favorite mage in the series. Hell, the man saved people and asked for nothing in return, tried peacefully protesting for years, got ignored and took matters into his own hands. I disapprove of his methods at the end, but understand them regaurdless.

Anders has a great story, not everybody likes him because he is unstable and not a good guy at all, but he has a deep story and personality, I think he is one of the best companions from DA series. Also I love Aveline, I don't know how no one mention her.

Sten cool, but not as a character, more has a people that I wish to know about, little flat otherwise. Oghren is one of the most realistic cases of a drunkard depressing and funny, good character but if you don't like him it makes sense. Cole is awesome! Blackwall is fine.

Solas was only a dishonorable mention probably because anyone playing outside of an elf gets shitted on by him (but hes actually very interesting and mysterious, and did NOT deserve to be a dishonorable mention. Yall just salty the egg didnt approve)

I at least thought Solas was an interesting and complex character... Yeah, I'm not saying he is correct in his actions/over-all motivations, but his psychology is interesting if you played the romance path. *suppliers for DA:O and DA:I* Imagine this: you are from a world where magic is free and everyone is immortal, and you free as many slaves as you can from evil tyrants/your old friends. Then a war happens (and you probably have something to do with it), and thus everyone goes to sleep. You wake up and feel that the world is different and no longer resembles your world at all. The magic you had that connected you to everything suddenly is cut off, and you have a huge disconnect from everything. Nothing is immortal anymore. You literally feel the world DYING around you (think of The Last Unicorn when the unicorn gets turned into a human and she freaks out and says that she can already feel her body dying around her. Yeah, that's traumatic). Then you go out and see the world. And dispite all the efforts that you made to save your people from slavery and genocide, you see that it's still is happening. You destroyed your world for NOTHING. That guilt is going to stay with you. And if you are a female elf Inquisitor that romances him, he has that moment where everything is real, but has to reject it because of his immense guilt of destroying his world. I mean, Alistair got an honorable mention and if you weren't a noble Warden in the first game who romanced Alistair (if you went the route to make him king), and you hadn't "hardened" him in the section where he meets his supposed sister, he breaks your heart and leaves you in the dust right before the final battle. And if you did "harden" and you are not a noble, then you get to be his mistress when he's king (again, if you decide to go that route). It was unexpected and it broke my heart. That was messed up. And I love Alistair. And Iron Bull straight up betrays you if you don't save the Bull's Chargers during his personal mission. It's really embarrassing when she betrays you, and all you're ever remembered for at the end of the game is the fact that a qunari spy managed to infiltrate the Inquisition and seduce The Inquisitor. It's literally mentioned that they write songs about it for many years to come. And you get to kill him at the end. That's just great. *end of spoilers* I'm not saying that what Solas wants to do is correct, or what he has done is okay, I'm just saying that he doesn't deserve a "dishonorable mention" is all.

+I was there the whole time In essence he kinda indirectly made the Fade more like itself by forming the Veil, just as he made the physical world more like itself. In so doing created a greater disparity which probably vastly contributed to fear of magic across the ages. He must feel so guilty.

That sucks. She was so sweet & naive about life away from her clan. I also preferred her romance over Isabela’s.

Admittedly, I haven’t played either Origins or 2, but if there was a chance to play either one, I’d take it in a heartbeat. Plus, Shale came from house Cadash, not ‘Casdash’. As far as companions go, I’d go with Cole innately since he’s such an innocent guy and his past hits me hard in the heart; it’s to the point that I ALWAYS go to recruit the Templar’s to even get him.

My favorite character was morigan and varic was 2nd to her for me. I feel like origins still has the best cast of characters overall. The characters from it were so memorable. I also think it would be awesome if they would just confirmed that dragon age and mass effect were in the same universe instead of just teasing us with the idea of them both being in the same universe with easter eggs. Imagine being able to actually play as a krogan in dragon age.

Honestly I had no idea Shale was female until my friend told me (she played with Polish dub in which Shale has a more feminine voice)

I have few friends who like her and I never understood why for that exact reason. She so goddamn stupid. Even all your other companions tell her that what she's doing is idiotic, yet she does it anyway and things go bad. And she wonders why.... I'd say she's not just my least favorite companion but also one of my least favorite characters in all DA2.

If you had a chance to restore a piece of your peoples history that had been lost for thousands of years and were helped along by a demon that had done nothing to you or your people would you be willing to take the risk? Maybe not, but you haven't been living with children who have nobody to look up to, with stories nobody knows are true but are accepted because they must be. She knows the risk and is willing to pay the price for her people. The keeper got herself killed, not Merril. That being said, I did like how they handled it in Dragon age origins: awakening better. If you get Velanna a blank book you can tell her to make stories of her own and that makes more sense and in my opinion was better.

I was fangirling the whole time (I'm actually playing Dragon Age Inquisition right now) and I was excited that Varric was number one, because frankly I love him, but I was rather sad that Cole did not make it on the list. Or at least Honorable mentions, I understand how he didn't though. Solas being a "Dishonorable Mention" did crack me up too.

Whoever made this list clearly never played the game or they would know that Alistair is more complex than any of the others on the list, even more so than Lelianna. Also, whether you like Solas or not he isn't a dishonorable mention, he is extremely well developed and if you took at least a bit of your time to fully sort out Dragon Age lore you would realize Solas is the closest we as the players have to knowing if the Maker is real and who the Maker is. Solas banished the Old Gods after all, which is a story credited to the Maker. A romanced Solas also reveals the true nature of the Elven Gods, not as Gods but essentially powerful noble mages who enslaved the Elves just as Tevinter did: the Talaslin Dalish wear being symbolic of said slavery. Solas is a VERY developed example of good intentions gone wrong, and a villian who doesn't view his actions as wrong and thinks he is doing what is right.

Honestly my favorite DA character is Aveline, she's so loyal and she's responsible. I also think it's hilarious how she flounders around when trying to convey her feelings for Guardsman Donnic.

That quest was so much cringe.. anders says at the beginning to just get them alone in a room.. she would have saved so much time listening to him and avoided such embarrassment

Leebsterftw I might have known that Anders said that, except I really don't like Anders, so I almost never bring him along... unless I'm taking Bethany into the deep roads.
