Hey, I saw 'Pink Flamingos' in the 80's in SMELLAVISION! When you entered the theatre you were given a scratch and sniff card. During the movie a number would flash on screen and you'd scratch it. People were gagging and retching everywhere. Funny shit!

Terrific list, and finally someone has put "Martyrs" at the #1 spot for disturbing. I watched it about 4 years ago, and it has stayed in my head - scene for scene - ever since. It is what I call a *Watch at your Risk* movie, because what you see you will never be able to unsee. Make sure you have an appointment with your therapist the next day, if you do decide to watch it.

@@jadengrant6063 i suppose there really hasnt been a movie that i found top to bottom disturbing. There may be a scene or two that somewhat is gross. I guess alot of it for me is the fact that real videos online exsist of gore, and after you see something like that, any movie is hard to find disturbing being that you know that whats going on is all acting.

I saw Under the Skin just after it came out and thought it was a good film. I watched Ichi the Killer when I was 13 because my dad said I'd like how crazy it was - which I did. I watched Antichrist because YMS hyped it up a bit and I usually like the movies he recommends and I liked Antichrist quite a bit. I watched Cannibal Holocaust with my dad an hour before I left for my school formal so I had all that shit in my head for the rest of the night - yay. I watched Martyrs only recently because my dad loves the movie and has been pushing me to watch it when I had time. So I finally made time, sat down and watched it. I got up about half way through, because I had this really strong feeling in my gut, like I......needed food. So I went and had chicken and garlic rice and watched this movie. Boy, that was a fucking mistake. There was some shit in that movie, that people shouldn't watch with a mouth full of rice, because you forget you have food in your mouth and when you let it hang open, it tends to fall out. But I think this was the movie that pretty much solidified that I'm desensitised to that gory stuff - based on the fact that I kept shovelling food down my mouth even during the more hardcore moments. And now I've stumbled across this list. I've been planning to watch A Serbian Film when my dad has the time to watch it. Salo has been a thing we've known about for a while, but he saw it when he was younger and really doesn't care to watch it again (mostly because he watches most movies once and then moves on). The list introduced me to Gummo which I've never heard of so I'll look into it. Eraserhead is a Lynch film that I haven't seen yet. Pink Flamingos is something that looks familiar but I know I haven't watched. So thanks I guess, for confirming I've seen some fucked up movies and that I still have many more to go.

Good list. Martyrs deserves the 1 because its the most well made bleakest movie in my opinion. There are other "films" like the Vomit gore trilogy (shit) and Angels Melacholy (interesting but very polarizing and plain evil). But I appreciate you leaving this tier out.

Nice selections! While I have only seen four of your featured films in theatres on the big screen, I agree with your assessments completely. However, I really thought you were leading to the original, uncut version of Bob Guccione's Caligula as number one (currently on KZread). I love history, porn, Gore Vidal, and the main actors. I had read about the film and all of its controversies, but it never came to my area (Orange County, CA). I was able to attain a VHS version in early '84 and watched it during the day. I usually snack while watching films. But this one was SO disturbing, on SO many levels, I began to consume mass quantities out of desperation. By end of day, I totaled over 9,000 calories. I have never come close since. The combination of personal gluttony and the gluttony of Roman excess on screen left me physically and psychologically wrecked for the next two days. I never forgot the feeling. I don't think much about it anymore, but your "greatest hits" pulled me back in. Finally, how about an honorable mention for Human Centipede, The First Sequence?

+kize39 I honestly think that if the film was American then it wouldn't get the attention it has, and people wouldn't look so deeply into it. Just like Hostel is rated as simply torture porn by most people. If it were French then people may have explored the human psyche elements of the film a little more and the comments section would have been far more interesting.

August Underground is possibly the most hard to watch trilogy I've ever seen - though I find it hard to pin-point an actual story to it (or at least one behind the blood, guts and seedy handheld camcorder). The ending to the first film does give the film as a whole a sense of merit, but alas the only point I get from the trilogy is the MUST SHOCK EVERYONE attitude. As a slight departure from the gorefest, I'd have to put the original Bad Lieutenant in there. Not only is it a profoundly disturbing film with a hell of a lot of social and religious commentary, it's by far Harvey Keitel's greatest performance in motion picture. A true testament to an unbelievably underrated actor.
