I didn’t get diagnosed with ADHD until I was in my mid-40s, but that doesn’t mean that I can use my undiagnosed ADHD as an excuse for bad behavior. I still knew right and wrong, and it just meant that I had to work harder to regulate my moods when interacting with others. The fact that John K is using ADHD and undiagnosed bipolar disorder as excuses instead of explanations (you still take responsibility for your actions when you provide an explanation) is insulting to those of us who have struggled for years without diagnosis.

The one about DuckTales wasn't *totally* unnoticed. I mean, the showrunners for the reboot watched the original show as kids and we all know who had a surprise appearance there.

I remember watching the Transformers movie as a child, and being shocked that many of the autobots were abruptly killed off.

And because of the death of Optimus a change was made to G.I. Joe the movie. Hawk was suppose to die in that. But in post production they changed it. When his eyes closed they added this line in: “He’s in a coma”. You never see him again in the movie. Especially at the ending after defeating the enemy another line was added telling the team that Hawk pulled through.

Fortunately, Della Duck's absence is addressed in the most recent remake of Duck Tales written as an absent mother, but nonetheless caring the initial tension of her dealing with motherhood that she never dealt with is a progression in the series that greatly touches on emotional aspects from all the characters, not just the triplets.

I was surprised when I watch youtube video about black and white tv commercials and The Flintstones were smoking [insert brand] cigarettes. But I also read a comment that said The Flintstones weren't meant to be a childrens cartoon. I still love The Flinstones though

Because of that Pokemon episode Porygon never appeared in any of the other anime except for one very small Cameo or two. Now porygon's got a bad rap for causing seizures even though Porygon was actually helping the heroes navigate through cyberspace. Technically it was the missiles and Pikachu thunderbolt that caught the seizures not Porygon

Ren and Stimpy was classic. But it was also completely out of control. You won’t find an animated show like that again. It’s a cartoon on acid.

#2 about the Flintstone's is due to the fact that they aired during the times when smoking was considered socially acceptable in places we don't allow anymore. Places like hospitals,restaurants and even airports. It's a product of its time is what my point is getting across

Cartoons have deeper meanings than one might anticipate. Seems like the animators or possibly screenwriters purposely left messages within it to warn us of something that might occur.

I demand justice for Porygon! The digital duck was a scapegoat and deserved better. Love that thing and its evolutions, but I hate how it never appeared again in the anime outside of a few stills in movie intros.

Sadly, Hasbro couldn't see their characters as anything more than advertising mascots, so when their respective toys were discontinued, there was little recourse but to kill them off in the movie. At least some characters avoided this fate, like Blaster, Perceptor, and the Dinobots. Others that managed to cheat death, like Bumblebee, Jazz, and Cliffjumper, simply got fazed out in season 3.

1960's cartoon character Underdog might've been a wink and nod to 1960's counterculture. The heroic Underdog often would get a strength boost from swallowing / popping a magic pill that helped him beat his opponents. At the time I imagine the population was experimenting with several pills that altered reality. Also Underdog was pretty modest in his civilian life, he Shined Shoes. Other heroes from earlier in the 20th century like Batman, Green Hornet, and The Shadow were millionaires / billionaires. Also Underdog was usually called into action by his reporter girlfriend Polly Purebred singing to him.

The one with the three guys on an island wasn't dark as they were looking at him because he ate the chocolate bar they were just talking about saving, the look was like "wtf dude" not "maybe we eat him".

Saying john K is a genius is a overstatement. The credit goes to the animators who had to put up with his shit especially Bob camp. Billy West was amazing too by the way. John K may be the creator but the animators did most of the work and the show belongs to Nickelodeon if you wanna get in that rabbit hole since they own the rights to it and allowed him to do it. Without Nickelodeon it wouldn't have happened. And I feel so bad for them and would love a autograph from Bob Camp or one of the amazing animators! They went through hell cause of that man. They really need credit for it. They did so much good for the animation industry and I love them and the show so much.

Another fact, while not dark, involves Flintheart Glomgold, from the original DuckTales. In the original comics he was a South African Business Duck. When the series was being developed Apartheid was at its highest. To distance themselves from that Disney turned him Scottish, and moved him to Duckburg. New DuckTales kept his South African roots, but he pretended to be Scottish, just to outdo Scrooge. I also heard that Della worked for NASA, hence why she wasn't around. Though I question this, as I never read any of the Carl Barks stories. As for Ren and Stimpy, let's face it, Bob Camp made that show great.

ExoSquad was a cartoon that came out in 1993 when the FCC in the US was going censor crazy. ExoSquad had extremely adult subjects like racism, horrors of slavery, horrors of war, and the killing of main characters. Characters on both sides were well defined giving good reasons why these characters did what they did. And some characters on the good side would turn into the villain, and some characters on the bedside would switch to the good side. The FCC didn't do one thing against the show and got two seasons. And now it's a placeholder on Peacock for free.

ExoSquad made in 1993 was Game of Thrones in space before Game of Thrones was Game of Thrones. And it was a Saturday morning cartoon. And NBC/Universal still thinks it's just another Kid's Cartoon. I just want NBC/Universal to move it off the kid's section and into the Sci-fi for adults section on Peacock.

the baddest scene in transformers the movie was megatron just merking the autobots.

"There's one character that nailed the maniacal laugh." "Here's a clip, but not of him laughing." Weak.

Arthur had a episode featuring Lance Armstrong when mrs.mcgrady struggled with cancer and Lance wants help the kids fight well lance got caught using steriods later edited for PBS with a different voiceover and the original episode can be found elsewhere.

John K's case is so, so much worse than this video goes into detail about. As a young fan who wrote to him and received a gift of banned episodes and a signed letter, it was horrible realizing that it had been a good thing that we were never in further contact.

As someone with ADHD and ASD, if I ever become a cartoonist, I want to be absolutely nothing like John K!!

I remember the seizure thing. It WAS prickachus fault! But I also remember being a kid, my teenage brother got an English subtitled back alley copy online, and it didn't give me seizures lol. Don't get me wrong, seizures are no fun, but there's usually an underlying problem when a few "flashing lights" can cause them And it's a cartoon, so they weren't really flashing lights, just fast changing colors. I only have such an issue with it because I was on the ground floor when Pokémon came to the USA, and parents were straight up not letting there kids get into it cuz of the seizures happening on the other side of the world

I learned about kids having seizures in Japan from watching changing colors in previous videos. I didn't have a seizure when I watched that in part of the episode.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the Satanic Panic which was directed at sword and sorcery shows at the time.

At least in the 2017 rendition of DuckTales sees a happier ending for Della. While she did struggle to live on the moon thanks to its hazards, she did eventually manage to make it back home with her kids. Unfortunately, the fate of Huey, Louie and Dewey's unnamed dad stays the same. I don't think we'll ever know what the dad will be like.

I always loved how just about every cartoon has their share of dark truths, because not every cartoon is as innocent as they seem.

The smoking commercial was so controversial that establishing a new law of tobacco advertising. In 1965, the Congress made the Cigarette Labeling and Advertising Act. No cartoon characters ever advertising any tobacco products ever since. Thank god for that. Even though, today's toons that they do anti-smoking campaigns to help kids from smoking like Pinky and the Brain. Well, Flintstones, no more smoking for you.

I've seen "He-Man", "Duck Tales", "Loud House", "The Flintsones", some of "Peppa Pig", and of course, "Pokémon"! Only, I watched one Duck Tales episode in German. I was in Europe. I already knew that kids who saw the lights flashing quickly in a Pokémon episode were hospitalized. I learned that from some previous videos. I had no idea about all the other dark truths. It's scary how a child saw a corpse! I did not know there were commercials with the Flintstones back then. Fred and Barney should've helped their wives with chores. By the way, "Pokémon" is anime, not a cartoon, just so you know.

Aaah, The Transformers: The Movie AKA the Great Hasbro Massacre of 1986

The R&S episode “Reverend Jack” was based on the crew’s experiences with John K. before and after he was fired. I used to resent Nickelodeon for firing him since the changes between the show’s second and third seasons were noticeable, but I was only 9 or 10 at the time and wasn’t aware of the full story behind the scenes. A classic example of how hubris destroys careers.

Gotta think when Flinstones where made, if you needed money tobacco was the sponsor to go. Look at all the magazines from that era.

Giving Porky the stutter made him more relatable.

The Greeblies used to freak me out on Flintstones. :)

Was the "prop dummy" that was the inspiration for Skeletor, the same one that they found during the taping of the Million Dollar Man in the early 80's?

Cartoons proved to be more than just whimsical or slapstick these days compared to their heyday of the 1920s to 1950s. Then along came more topical and sensitive subjects that were included in the modern day. Whether animators and cartoonists were trying to add a message in their work or not, it’s proof that they can be all too real like everyone else.

John Crisfaluci did only one great show - Ren and Stimpy show. He later fell from Grace by making by making its infamous adult spin-off. And then he was going wrong
