Hey one magic item that almost no one uses is the robe of eyes which gives you 360 degree vision, advantage on perception checks, 120ft of dark vision, see invisibility, and the ability to see into the astral plane up to 120ft; to this even better it is a rare magic item so if your me playing a human rogue and you get the observant feat at 1st level then you'd be seeing everything

If you have this then it means your "eyes" are always open. So any monster with a glare ability or a blinding effect will always get you.

This thing is good for rangers that are multiclassing and forgoing the level 18 ability that allow you to see anything that’s invisible.

I have just started playing a beastmaster ranger strictly from the PHB to really see how bad it is. In comparison the party is made of a conquest paladin, life cleric, and zealot barbarian. So I am greatly appreciated that this list was made to help me focus in on what things I'll need to get a hold of. Great video and I think it was fairly well balanced list.

Serpent scale mail is 14 AC with no max dex modifier so potentially +5 for 19 AC which is higher than plate and that armor doesn’t impose disadvantage on stealth. That’s my #1 ranger item

The Quiver would be a great item to store mundane arms in for later, like when you need to arm prisoners or peasants for a revolt if you don't have a bag of holding

The Cloak of the Bat is honestly pretty cool, as a Gloom Stalker I kind of hope I can find one someday. Bracers of Archery are probably the simplest most obvious one too I suppose. Kind of want that Pendant of the Claw... but that would require my DM to allow me to tame another animal / act on her cryptic hint of reviving my old one, so that's more like RP flavour then anything at that point. Given I'm the only one in our group that still uses their starter weapon, I'm sad to say Oathbow looks fantastic, even if half of it is made null cuz of Sharpshooter ........

Scimitar of speed is a bad choice. Rangers have a ton of bonus action abilities and spells. Also dual wielding negates its use which you almost always want to do since hunters Mark is per hit. I’m playing a ranger now. From level one up to level 12 currently. One of the biggest things a ranger needs is AC. Even just a ring of protection or magic studded leather is huge. My character has a cloak of displacement which is great for a ranger. Especially if you have the Hunter’s multi attack defense

Jim C I know this is super late, but I'm watching it now and you're a top comment. The other way to look at this is you can skip the duel wielding, take defense, use a shield, and still get the same number of attacks you would with two weapons out of one, for the exact same action economy, and now your AC is 3 points higher, more if you have a magic shield. Maybe that doesn't fit your ideal, but it'd be a great use for this item based on your own logic of needing AC

Agreed. It's always shocking to me how often D&D KZreadrs suggest items or builds that constantly use up your bonus action every turn - as if the Ranger got an additional bonus action on each turn or something. Sooo many Crossbow Expert builds seem to ignore the action economy entirely, or the fact that most Ranger spells require a bonus action to cast (not just Hunter's Mark, I'm also talking about Ensnaring Strike, Zephyr Strike, Lightning Arrow, Guardian of Nature and - of course - Swift Quiver) !

@@Daddylonglegs93 As someone who has played a Ranger to a decently high level (around level 9-10) twice and often theorycrafts new builds for Rangers, this still doesn't solve the core action economy issues (because you're still mostly going to be casting Hunter's Mark and moving it around on most of your turns). The only Ranger I can really see doing sword & board (relatively) well is the Horizon Walker, ironically not because that subclass doesn't have good things to do with their bonus action, but because its use of "I choose you for extra damage"-ability is normally better than any of the Ranger's bonus action spells for a melee character (2d6 from 2 Hunter's Mark-hits only deal more damage if you hit 2 times, which is not guaranteed and requires concentration). A Scimitar of Speed - while being a very good item overall and a fantastic item for Rogues - would still not be worth it for such a build because you would always pick the 2d8 (almost guaranteed with 3 attacks due to Haste) extra force damage (assuming getting the Scimitar at high levels) vs. the one additional Scimitar attack.

I also like the “weapon of warning” from the DMG. Ranger should have their head in a swivel and be on the lookout for ambushers.

Nerd Immersion I actually love both of those options and personally would not sub them out. IMHO I would sup out the figurines for a weapon of warning. Also food for thought to anyone else that may read this... try to convince the rest of your party to pony up some gold for a weapon of weakening b/c they also gain some benefits of you having it. And try to get a dagger of warning, stick it in your boot and never pull it out and no one can see it to steal it.

The sun blade is also really good as a melee counterpart to your bow because it’s a +2 sword and it has versatility and finesse which is really good if you have high strength or dexterity. The only downside is you have to use a bonus action to ignite it and it requires attunment

also with the quiver you can draw weapons from it unlike the bag of holding where you have to take the time to get it out of the bag

I love taking 1 level dip into Cleric so you can use fun Quarterstaffs like the Staff of Withering.

Oathbow sounds amazing with elven accuracy.

depends on some stuff. for me it would be pointless because i have a kobold ranger which means i have pack tactics. so long as im not acting alone, i can shoot any enemy that my party has engaged with advantage so having to limit myself to just one target is pretty useless

I played a 2e AD&D Anti-Ranger for 10 years. Through high school & University. Matched Pair +5 swords of sharpness, Obsidian Steed figurine, +5 Studded Leather Armour, Bag of holding, Amulet of True sight is all I can remember... So I think this list holds up pretty well...

Hey Ted, I know that Candlekeep Mysteries wasn't out when you made this but I would say that the Serpent Scale from it would definitely replace the Dragon Scale on the list. Love your D&D content mate!

I'm going aarakocra gloom stalker. I have 19 Dex at lvl 3 and I'm going for 20 dex and 14 int next ASI. What items would you recommend for me?

10:49 Bracers of Archery are a +2 to Damage rolls only, it says nothing in the text about any increase to the attack rolls. Am I missing something?

as a fellow horizon walker i would suggest the boots of striding and sprinting and the Cloak of Arachnida. Become a badass teleporting spider man with a longbow who jumps and teleports everywhere.

@@Mr_Morningsloth Don't remember the effect, but it's Nettle and it's one of the few sentient items available in AL play, especially at lower levels. I think it's a +2 Hand Crossbow with the +2 initiative minor trait...and being sentient, if you work with it, you can also, potentially, get it to keep using the help action for you.

the amulet of health is useful for any character as it removes the need to invest into constitution allowing you to put your ability scores and their improvements into other things like getting a feat or increasing your mental attributes

Beast master ranger does the most consistent single target no resource at will damage of all classes if you don’t use feats. Just choose giant poisonous snake.

The new updates for ranger was needed. I'm a total noob and my ranger is a dmpc healbot npc, but he needed something more than all the stuff I did to make him a mobile shelter for the PC halfling. High AC for level 2 and healing spells. That's it. Granted he doesn't need much more as the rogue is the heroine, but still.

This week was the absolute week from hell for me at work. And after streaming for 3 hours, recorded this and then had to prep for work stuff. Thankfully this week is over, I survived it and things should pick up on my end

Bows are severely lacking in 5e. I made one for a Ranger in the party. It is sentient and good aligned. It claims it always hits. Arrows appear when you pull the bowstring back, and can be lightning, fire, frost or acid. Arrows do an extra 1d6 of the chosen type up to level 10, then the extra damage goes to 2d6. It is cursed though. You can't use another weapon and if your attack roll misses, the arrow turns around and goes for a random target until it hits.

All of these are great

Im homebrewing a variant of the Oathbow to make it a culminative item. Rather it being stuck in a bow I'm turning them into missiles for ranged attacks that once stuck into a creature every successive attack on that creature deals 1d6 piercing damage. The character gains more as they level up by the time you'd attain a very rare item you'd have 3. So the maths works the same but allows it to be spread out on multiple enemies or stacked up on 1 and without the command word BS

This is a video that would be well worth revisiting with the Tasha's material

Years ago in third edition i played an elven wizard that most confused for a ranger because i carried a long bow and a quiver of Quiver of Ehlonna the difference was i only carried 10 arrows but 35 scrolls rolled up on arrow shafts and 5 wands (Detect Magic, Magic Missile, Lighting Bolt, Fire Ball, and Cure Wounds) the DM was so shocked he let me do it.

I'm looking at playing a Ranger in a Party with no Wizard or Bard. Probably take the Goggles of Object Reading to get Identify.

Is revised ranger not to be used anymore? I mean it is unearthed arcana so it was never official in the first place.

Enjoyed the list. Lvl 7 beastmaster ranger, those close to me call me Rolo, those farther away call me wtf was that..... happy hunting.

Are lengendary items off the list because they are too high level and hard for parties to get them? Ps: are there legendary items good for rangers? Haha

I left them off because Legendary items are a rare for anyone to ever have, and they're usually all useful. Who wouldn't say no to +3 armor

My character is now 5 th level Gloom stalker ranger and now I'm studing 6. Level to cleric. Infact Twilight domaine cleric. Because we play Underdark campaign my favorite terraine is Underdark... and Wood Elf lore made possiblity to serve my god as ranger and cleric. Because Rangers are their clerics also!

Ranger is my favourite class.

Hunters mark ads a D6 and you want to move it with your bonus action. Sword of warning much better

I have not understood why people think rangers are bad. Sharpshooter, Crossbow Expert, AND conjure animals? Plus expertise, fighting styles, extra attack. The only thing not in the PHB there is the expertise (canny).

Arrow of Slaying > Oathbow Goggles of Night on a gloomstalker. Gives a solid +90 darkvision to what your race have. For fluff. Amulet of the Planes for a horizon walker.

mr roar104 I feel that min/max-ers managed to say that rangers are bad as a sort of propaganda that people ended up believing. If you don’t care for optimizations like I do then the ranger more than carries its own weight.

I think you're doing it wrong haha. I play a horizon walker ranger dealing tons of damage with hunters mark/zephyr strike, planar warrior. And really hard to hit with other hw stuff. Out of combat is fun too being the party guide edit: and I hear gloom stalker is even better

Why would you be sorry, I play a ranger and constantly cause more damage than anyone in my party which included an OP Demi god that can cast chain lightning

I know I'm late to the party, but I wanted to point out 2 things. First, the Bracers of Archery only give a +2 to damage, not to attack. Second, based off the Oathbow and the description of generic magic weapons, bows don't have a +modifier. They have effects, as far as I've seen. The arrows have the +modifers

There is +ammunition, yes, but there are in fact also +bows as well.

The sad thing is people, especially new players, want to play Rangers. They are pretty weak though. The revised ranger UA makes it somewhat better.
