    So some crazy/dumb laws from the state I live in: 1. Oklahoma will not tolerate anyone taking a bite out of another’s hamburger. 2.People who make “ugly faces” at dogs may be fined and/or jailed. 3. Whaling is Illegal. Whaling... in Oklahoma. A 100% completely land locked state. Crazy cakes. Thanks for your videos, I enjoy them quite a bit. Makes me want to go back to Scotland.

    The laws about being able to shoot trespassers in the US vary from state to state. Even in the states where it's legal, they still require it to be in self-defense and you must be in immediate danger. Even then, you better have a good way to prove you were in danger.

Guess it's okay the rest of the week. 2) It is illegal to clean your donkey in the bathtub. This one may have been changed, but I believe that it was technically legal to hang someone for stealing a horse in Texas until quite recently. A horse thief was about the worst thing you could be in the old West. It could mean someone was left stranded without supplies in the middle of nowhere. Also, a horse with all its gear and the contents of the saddlebags was a significant amount of value that people would have to leave just standing around in the open much of the time. Strict laws and respect for others' property were all that kept people from just waltzing off with the majority of a man's wealth and worldly possesions while he was in the store buying coffee.

    The Whale one makes sense, back in the whale hunting days, whale heads have a section of the brain, prized for making perfumes, etc. It's called something like Ambergrist. To harvest it, you had to climb into the head to collect it in buckets.

  • @heymikeyh9577

    @heymikeyh9577

    Don Troutman-Actually, ambergris, which is still used a bit in perfume, comes from the digestive tract, and because It’s not water soluble, can occasionally wash up on shore when a whale dies at sea. The precious commodity in the head is spermaceti, which the whale may use as a sonar receiver, and from which whale oil is extracted. The spermaceti organ is not in the brain, however, but on top of the “snout” outside the brain case.

    Thanks for a good laugh! About trespassing not being a big deal in Scotland--as you know, the Presbyterian church started in Scotland and our version of the Lord's Prayer says "forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us" instead of using "debts" and "debtors".

    I grew up in the country in Northern Michigan, USA. We have the law to keep others off our land because trashing, hunting ( accidental) shootings can happen. People can irritate theirs neighbors by sanding in their yard, constantly walking across it, or some other way of disrespecting the property. Rude! Unfortunately manners and respect must have been lost on the ship over here Lol!

    It was NOT illegal to steal in the small town I worked in as a constable in the early 90’s. For many years no one noticed that. It was immoral to steal, if you got caught you had to see the priest or pastor and they handed out punishment.

    Ha ha. I came across this lass in WalMart out here in California, USA. And asked her, where does she haul from. At first the lass said, i transferred from another store. I said, no love. What country do you hail from? She laughed and said Scotland. She says it's a beautiful land, wanted to chat some more, but, she was a cashier. And people behind me was giving me the stink eye. So cut it short. Loved her accent. Would love to visit sometime. After I visit my Mums land, Norway.

    My favorite Hagar the Horrible cartoon is where Hagar and his crew land on an unknown shore. Hagar tells one of his crew to see if this is England, so the little guy goes ashore yelling out, "We love England" the next frame shows POW, OUCH, POW. The last frame the little guy walks out saying, "Its' Scotland" This is how my ancestors felt back in the 1700s when they came to America.

    In my hometown of Spartanburg , South Carolina it's illegal to eat watermelon in the Magnolia Street Cemetery . In the old days people would picnic at their loved ones graves , but the seeds would sprout into vines that had to be cleared out . Besides that , who wants to eat melons that might contain the remains of the departed ? Another South Carolina law is that minors may not play Pinball machines . Chewing gum is illegal in Singapore , except for nicotine gum with a Doctor's prescription . I get that one . I'm disgusted by wads of gum that people spit on the pavement . Many anti spitting laws were enacted when Tuberculosis was a public health concern .

    Not a law but a right I'm sure you did not know Scots had until 1903 (when it was revoked by the French Gouvernement) : During the Auld Alliance, all Scots living in France were naturalised and thus granted all the same rights as French people (ownership, inheritance...)... It was extended to the whole nation of Scotland in September 1513 by Louis XII : ‘the kingdom of Scotland who shall reside, or come to reside. and shall hereafter decease in our said kingdoms, countries and seignories. of what station soever they be;… [and] they shall be capable of acquiring therein all estates, seigneuries and possessions which they may lawfully acquire; ... to testate and dispose by testament and order of latter-will, living donation, or otherwise at their will and pleasure; and that their wives and children or heirs.. .may by testament or otherwise, take and inherit their estates and successions, as if they were natives of said Kingdom. ...The Church shall be open to all benefices and dignities secular or regular.. .and they, in like manner, [are] able to dispose of their said property, and that in all things those of the said nation be treated, favoured, held, deemed, and reputed, forever, as the true originals of our said kingdom;...provided alwvays that the said king of Scotland [James IV], and his successors, shall grant and allow us such and like privileges to our subjects in their said kingdom.’ You talk a lot about the bond between Americans and Scots but there is no bond stronger than the one between France and Scotland, established 1295. If that is not clear enough, I am French and love Scotland (lived there, would surely have been back had I not found my other half and settled in my home country at the end of my studies...)

He would drink until he was nearly unconscious, at that time the bartender would get him on his horse and tie the reins around the saddle horn and send the horse off in the direction of home.
