10 Crazy Things a SCOTTISH person noticed about TEXAS

Ойын-сауық

FIRST IMPRESSIONS OF TEXAS, AMERICA: as a Scottish person who's been fascinated by America - the USA - since childhood, it was so amazing to be invited by the US Embassy to the UK for my first ever visit. SUBSCRIBE to my channel for more Scottish reactions: / @shaunvlog
It's awesome to see so many people from America who celebrate their Scottish and Irish ancestry so keenly, and come on to KZread to seek out people celebrating these cultural nuances. You only have to look at the success of the Try channel or Facts channel to see how people love seeing Irish People trying American things for example.
I feel sad that, for our part, so few in Scotland celebrate this amazing connection between Scotland and America, and I want to change that. So to start, here are 10 of my first impressions of TEXAS.

Surprising to most though - we hardly ever have to use 'em. They're meant for defense. It sounds kinda crazy to people who don't feel that way about guns, but the best way to stop a crazy shooter at a concert or event is for prepared and well-trained citizens to stop them, as they don't have to wait for the police to show up. Texas is big. Police have a ways to go sometimes and a lot of people can be hurt or killed fast if the shooter is the only one packing. Personally, I feel the most safe at a concert with a seasoned grey hair with a gun in their holster scanning the room around me.

As a Texan who spent a couple of weeks in Scotland, I have to say that I, too, felt a kinship between myself and the Scots with whom my wife and I interacted. As with Texas, there seems to be a great deal of pride associated with being Scottish, and the attitude towards that pride is very similar; it is kind of a tongue-in-cheek acknowledgement that you're from and/or live in a place that's a bit more special than most people perceive it to be. It's very hard to describe, but it is absolutely palpable and 100% unapologetic. My wife and I are both anxious to get back to Scotland as soon as possible so that we can continue exploring the wonderful place that we found it to be.

When you come back to Texas you need to spend about a month. Spend a week on the coast in places like Galveston and Corpus Christi with a couple of days in Houston for good measure. Next spend a couple of days in San Antonio and a couple of days in California East.... I mean Austin. You should also spend some time in West Texas exploring the geography and small town culture between San Antonio and El Paso. Then, traveling from the desert to the forest, so to speak, go explore East Texas and maybe go fishing on one of the many reservoirs like Toledo Bend on the Texas/Louisiana borders. And you've got to enjoy the many different cuisines in each area. Might want to buy some pants a size bigger in the waist.

I felt a kindred spirit connection to Scotland as far as 'pride' goes. This was late 70s/early 80s, but at that time definitely the Scots were very proud of their homeland. I hope it is still this way. I have also sensed a kindred 'pride' spirit with Australians that I have met while traveling. Although they were as varied as you could imagine, every single one of them had one detail in common, people were not created with the world. In every single Indian creation story I have ever read, people are, somehow, already living before the world is created and are taken from wherever they were, the Happy Hunting Ground, the sky, asleep in a cave, and *put* into the Earth. I think this indicates that, as diverse as the different tales are, they all go back to common original, and that the first settlers were aware of the fact that they had come from one distinct place to another distinct place, and that initial understanding got incorporated into their mythology.

Hey, thank for coming to Texas. From Houston here, and I love Scotland too. I was taught how to say Edinburgh. WOW! I was so off, but the guys making fun of me in a fun way was awesome. Well, you are wearing the hat well. YES! Whataburger is from Texas, so you have to Coe back just for that! HA! And yes, we have a lot of Scottish connection in Texas, especially East Texas where you will recognize a lot of last names. Even our largest city Houston is named after Sam Houston, a Texan of Scottish heritage. ;-D. So, yeah, we love you guys. I'd like you to come to our Houston Highlands Festival because it will be a kick to get your thoughts. So, you have to come back and see Austin, San Antonio and of course the largest city on Texas ... Houston, my home. But as you know don't come during the summer. If you come bak send me a message and we will organize a group to show you around. Well, I've run on so thanks for the sharing. Cheers!

In the middle of Iraq, even the Iraqi children knew the symbol of the state of Texas. Wore that patch proudly! Texas is the only state where its residents will purchase items shaped in their state. It must be geographically correct, but we will buy the crap out of that stuff!

So, I may not have been in every home in OR or CA, but those that I did do not display their state patriotism like Texans do. 99% of the homes I have been in in Texas have something proudly displayed regarding their state. Proudly displayed by the main entrance of their homes. That was my point. Not at all saying Texas is better or worse. No need to say "Wrong" like we are on a game show! :)

One thing...PLEASE don't handle your cowboy hat by the brim! It made me cringe every time. It should only be handled by the crown/dent area. :) I have to say that I visited Scotland on my honeymoon 10 years ago and felt the same way about Scotland that you feel about Texas. Then I pushed play and continued listening. My husband then gave a snort laugh and said “apparently your fellow Texans already filled him in on his grave mistake”. 😂 AMEN! You will find descendants of transplanted Scots the whole way up and down the Appalachian mountains. The middle Atlantic area, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, are full of those of Scots Ancestry. Many were the stubborn dissenters, mostly Presbyterians, who left Scotland after the Test Act of 1703. Many immigrants from Ulster and the Lochalsh area were given land so they could serve as a 'buffer' between the native Americans on the frontier and the more developed settlements near the Atlantic coast.
