The first Corvette came with the "Blue Flame Six" - a mildly tuned version of the ancient "stovebolt." It helped to make it obvious that Chev needed a modern V8, which became a big asset.

When you talk about the first Corvettes, you can not claim that they had power to spare. They came with the blue flame 6 that to Americans was very underpowered. GM was going off of the European sports cars of the time, which consistently used 6 cylinders in their sports cars.

The 1961 Chrysler-Dodge Turboflite was designed and built as a fully functional one-off dream concept car, designed by Virgil M. Exner as a platform for the new Chrysler Turbine engine. But production delays in providing a functional running engine kept it from being driven and tested. Thus, for the show circuit in 1961-62, Chrysler installed a non-working dummy engine in it for show, with a battery backup for the lights and the impressive hood canopy to go up and down. Sadly, Chrysler execs pulled the plug on this one in 1962 in favor of an all-new prototype, the 1963 Chrysler Turbine car, with fully functional engine and all other systems. The 1963 version was very successful, with 55 units being built and tested, and delivered to test market public persons for lease evaluation. Instead of putting this 1961 Chrysler Turboflite in a museum collection where it belonged, Chrysler scrapped it in 1963.

Enjoyed your video. I got to see one of Chrysler's Turbine cars. Our family was traveling, pulled in for gas and there it was. At first we thought it was a new Thunderbird. This one was bronze or gold. Chrysler 'let' people use these for feedback. It was very nice. Also, at 3:35 thanks for letting the beautiful COE park. Keep up the nice work.

The first two years of the Corvette were the "Blue Flame" straight six with three side-draft carburetors. The first Corvette V8 was the 1955 model.

2:26 -- The red car is a modern replica of the Lincoln Futura. It's smaller and has dull (aluminum?) trim instead of the bright chrome on the original. Of course, most of us know that the original car was purchased by customizer George Barris and modified into the TV Batmobile.

This is a highly interesting video showing some little known concept cars, but marred by a somewhat flawed narration. The first Corvettes were badly underpowered by a stock Chevy 6-cylinder engine and two-speed automatic transmission. They were not powerful and fast as stated in this video until later models came out. The video announces the 1963 Ford Seatelleite was introduced at the 1962 World’s Fair in New York City, which is ridiculous. Also the world’s fair in NYC was in 1964. Probably meant to say the 62 world’s Fair in Seattle. The red and white Lincoln Futuras depicted I assume are modern reproductions as the original one was converted into the TV series Batmobile by LA custom car king George Barris. The narrator states Batman fans love this car but does not give this simple explanation why. Also, did Jay Leno give you permission to use his video of the Turbine car or is it now in the public domain? Just asking.

@@AMERICAN-AUTOS I was only 1 year old when that car was shown. But I remember as a young boy around 1959-61 writing to the big 3 automakers asking for information about their cars of the future. Much to my surprise, I heard back from them. I am sure that they knew that I was a young boy writing to them. I wish I had saved what they had sent me.

Chrysler turbine car was not a concept car. Concept cars are one-offs. The firebird II, would only self-drive on GM's closed course, at their tech center, in Warren Michigan. There were wires embedded in the concrete, and sensors on the front bumper to make sure it didn't cross the wires.

@@AMERICAN-AUTOS I grew up 1 mile from GM's Tech Center, and worked on the building of Chrysler's museum storage building, where they keep the cars not on display. I also visited the 6 secret warehouses, in Sterling Heights, Mi., where GM:s concepts are stored. ( GM bought my brother in laws 69 GTO Judge, for their collection.) When we dropped it off, they gave us a tour. Plus I'm a car nut.

The technology ascribed to these “concept” cars was not available when the these car were designed. A clear bubble top that has to be the dumbest idea ever for a automobile. Did any of these cars predict the future of car design? I grew up in the 50s and early 60s and no one except some journalists ever praised the design of those cars. I think it was an Oldsmobile concept it looked like a 1950s Studebaker a manufacturer that went out of business in 1956. The voice over sounded as if it was read from something the Automakers putout.

I remember these concept cars. There were some beauts. It would be nice to see a few of these revisited - but with todays style in mind. Current car design is ABYSMAL. And most designers must be on cheap drugs or something.

I know. I wrote to Toyota and told them the front end of their 2021 Camry looked like a replacement cartridge for a razor. Once you see it your eyes and brain will never forgive you, unless you look at the Mirai. Why do they make so many cars so incredibly ugly? It's like wanting a Charlize Theron, but only Roseanne Barrs are available. The best styling is probably Mazda. It's clean and nice.

The Chrysler Turbine car WASN'T a gamechanger. Nothing changed. I proved turbine engines were not practical for cars. High fuel consumtion and lac luster performance.

The only reason I stopped production, was the 1200 degree exhaust. It could start people's clothes on fire that would be 6 ft away.

@@garyszewc3339 The Chrysler Turbine was never a "production" car. Fifty-five of them were made for a consumer testing and research program. The exhaust temperature problem was solved by the use of rotating heat exchangers that transferred heat from the exhaust to the intake air.

The Corvette was the coolest car!
