It mentions in the description the companies are in no particular order yet the list started at number 10 instead of number 1. If this is really a countdown, I find it interesting that the oldest ballet companies are ranked higher than younger companies. Also, it seems that the companies specialized in Russian/French classical ballet are ranked higher than say companies that focuses on RAD or Balanchine style of dance. I wonder why... hmmmm.

No, in the last 20 years or so NYC ballet has become a very mediocre company. It is definitely no rival to ABT (if we are talking about companies based in New York) which got a huge boost after hiring Alexey Ratmansky, and comparing it to the best European companies is even more ridiculous (by the way, what is more striking in this list is the absence of Hamburg ballet, although this might come from the fact that John Neumeier is a relatively controversial figure in the ballet world). When was the last time when NYC ballet made a completely new world class production? Rankings are always very imprecise, but at least it seems pretty logical to put National Ballet of Canada as the best company in North America followed by ABT, although I think that both are a little too high on the list (there are several European companies (e.g. Dutch National Ballet) which are certainly ahead of them both in terms of technical abilities and in terms of originating new productions; on the other hand Ballet La Scala is probably also too high on the list).
