Missed Bound for Glory, Woody Guthrie's biopic, directed by Hal Ashby. It depicts him as a migrant field laborer in the Depression/Dust Bowl, who finds his voice as a folk singer, putting his voice at the service of unions and the dispossessed. Starring David Carradine, who was a fine singer in his youth, and who sang Guthrie's 30s style folk songs in his own 70s folksy style. Look for the movie/soundtrack. Excellent.

That’s not really true - the movie’s theme song won the Oscar for Best Song, and Taron himself won a Golden Globe as Best Actor for the role.
While it wasn't exactly categorized as a biopic, I feel like Andrew Garfield deserved a spot on the list for nailing his role in Tick Tick... BOOM! (2021) as Jonathan Larson. He literally trained for a year just for this role.

Val Kilmer was pretty much the second coming of Jim Morrison. He was the closest to sounding like the real thing...I remember hearing that skeptics were claiming Jim's voice was dubbed over Val's when the movie first premiered. Joaquin did a phenomenal job as Johnny, both musically and characteristically.
I loooove Rocketman! It’s a musical biopic that knows it’s a musical and embraces the genre.
Sissy Spacek nailed it as Loretta Lynn. Loretta Lynn practically hand picked Sissy Spacek to portray her in Coal Miner's Daughter.
Val Kilmer performance as Jim Morrison was so on point It's not enough to sound like Morrison the maniacal energy had to be so draining

@Price70

@@maziebunny2 "Hollow victory"? Butler was outter worldly as Elvis on and off the concert stage over 3 decades. If Fraser was undeniable he would have won BAFTA (UK Oscar equivalent since 1947) and the Golden Globe, regardless of his boycott because he didn't have to be nominated in Dec when they knew in Nov he wouldn't show. Austin Butler also won around the world in Australia, Ireland, Spain and South Africa. Fraser won on narrative as a sexual assault victim in the Me Too era and and his feel good comeback story where he quivered in each interview. As Charlie he just acts like Brendan in a fat suit. Plus they don't give it to young sex symbols in their first lead role. Oscars always have additional agenda
Taron Egerton was amazing as Elton John in Rocketman!!! Austin Butler was amazing as Elvis Presley in Elvis

I was thinking the same thing. It should have at least been an honorable mention!
The Buddy Holly Story made me a huge fan of Buddy Holly and his music. Gary Busey was electrifying and played the role so perfectly, his actual singing voice and guitar playing was really good especially with his background as a musician. His Oscar nomination was well deserved. Kudos to the other actors for using their real vocals, deserving of every accolade. I love Diana Ross but I prefer Andra Day's Billie Holiday more. She had the same vocal style, her haunting version of Strange Fruit gave me chills. Austin Butler was equally impressive as Elvis, he could've lipsynched to just Elvis' voice but good thing his vocals were still used.
Coal Miners Daughter is one of my ALL time favorite movies.
Sissy Spacek did Loretta Lynn Justice I’m glad she won best actress
I heard the reason Taron Edgerton got cast for Rocketman was after producers heard him sing "I'm Still Standing" in the animated movie "Sing".

Casting an actor that can perform as the character matters more than casting an actor who can sing the role but if they can do both it definitely elevates the movie.

Taron was absolutely amazing in Rocketman and his Oscar snub was disrespectful towards such a stellar performance from one of hollywoods finest young actors. René was absolutely amazing as Judy, as was Joaquin & Reese as Johnny & June.
