Richard Greene, far better
Wow, you actually made me wanna rewatch the 1938 one which I've last seen 40 years ago as a kid. Your excitement is quite infectious! Since you're into really old classics and Basil Rathbone, I sure hope you know and love The Court Jester, one of my all-time faves. 🙂
Great video, thanks. Errol Flynn is Robin Hood all the way! And the chemistry with Olivia de Havilland works beautifully !

Thank you! Absolutely, they were amazing!
Alan Rickman absolutely stole the movie as the Sheriff of Nottingham! He is so delightfully evil you can’t help but love him!
What a brilliant video! The quality in your presentation was phenomenal. I could hardly believe the small number of subscribers when I saw it. I'm excited to have come upon your channel before it inevitably grows much bigger! Great job, man. Will definitely turn on the notifications button.

Hey thank you so much for the encouragement! And I’m working on the channel growth. haha
Oh! You’re in my wheel-house now! I adore the 1991 Patrick Bergin Robin Hood due to its historical accuracy. I dig him as Rob a lot. He’s strong and has a great twinkle in his eye. You missed (of course you’re discussing films), the outstanding BBC series Robin of Sherwood. It ought have been worth a mention in the vid. Considering all the fun films of the 40’s and 50’s, I have to wonder why you nor anyone would ever bother with the Mel Brooks film at all. Rogues of Sherwood, Son of Robin Hood, etc..all better films. It’s worth looking to early Romantic literature when Robin Hood entered contemporary literature and acceptance. One of this things was Ivanhoe. Film-wise, every iteration, but mostly the 1983 and 1997 made-for-TV Ivanhoe productions featured “Robin of Loxley” of course as he is part and parcel to the story.
I’m not sure if you’ve seen it, but the 1922 Robin Hood starring Douglas Fairbanks is one of the all-time best versions of the character. I’d recommend it!

I do need to see that! I’ve only watched a handful of movies from the ‘20s so far.
No Robin of Sherwood? For shame. It's easily the best.
Errol flynn is robin hood nobody gets even near best there is
I've only seen the Disney version and the Connery/Hepburn version which, in it's day, I remember was marketed as a big 'comeback' for Audrey Hepburn who had virtually retired from moviemaking years earlier. Now I wanna see the 1938 classic (yes, that enchanting technicolor looks perfect for a story like this) and Prince of Thieves (but more because I like Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio - I wish some director would star her in a huge movie in 2023 at age 65!)

I do really love Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio in Prince of Thieves, and yes, I'm totally down for her to have a comeback!
Love your video. So glad I found it. Great list, I'm glad you put Prince of tTheives and the adventures of Robin Hood as your number 2 and 1. They are the best Robin Hood movies.

@@cobwebschannel no problem. I grew up with Prince of Theives.
Such a fun video! So interesting also to compare all these films albeit there are a couple I haven't seen. I grew up watching Disney's version, Men in Tights and the classic Errol and Olivia masterpiece. I agree with that ranking! I also thought that Olivia's Marian was the best and more involved than in more recent versions. Errol had such a flare and felt as a natural in historical costume and that more chivalrous sort of language. Feels like he truly created a character or a model, much like Douglas Fairbanks. Thoroughly enjoyed it and I will search for the ones I haven't seen!

Oh wow, thanks so much for the kind words and feedback! Flynn and de Havilland were amazing in their movie, and so many others they did together. By the way, I watched 7 Brides for 7 Brothers a couple of nights ago. It was CRAZY but I had a total blast with it. Thanks for the recommendation!

@@cobwebschannel So glad to hear that!
Daniel, there were two other Hammer Films Robin Hood films: one released before "Sword of Sherwood Forest" titled "The Men of Sherwood Forest" and one released after it titled "A Challenge for Robin Hood".
I always saw Ridley Scott's Robin Hood as a sequel to Kingdom of Heaven.
Robin Hood is definitely my favorite fictional character. I could not agree more with your praise of Errol Flynn's The Adventures of Robin Hood. It is absolutely one of my top five movies of all time. I could hardly agree less with your praise of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieved. I remember looking so forward to seeing that movie when it first came out. Kevin Costner as Robin Hood--what's not to like? Then I saw the movie.... I very nearly walked out on it. I ESPECIALLY hated Alan Rickman as the Sheriff of Nottingham, but I also didn't care for the Robin Hood/Will Scarlett subplot. As for the Disney animated Robin Hood, I DID walk out on that one. Just out of curiosity, have you ever seen The Bandit of Sherwood Forest with Cornel Wilde as the son of Robin Hood or Rogues of Sherwood Forest with John Derek as the son of Robin Hood? Rogues has the added distinction of Alan Hale, Sr. reprising his role as Little John! Also, have you ever seen The Flame and the Arrow with Burt Lancaster? I consider this my favorite "Robin Hood movie without Robin Hood". If you've seen it, you'll know what I mean. Thanks for the fun list.

Hello! I have seen Bandit of Sherwood Forest. I thought it was okay, but wasn’t a big fan. I’ve also seen Flame and the Arrow, which I really enjoyed! It would have made this list, if it technically counted. haha

@@cobwebschannel, Are you familiar with the 1975 TV series When Things Were Rotten? That was Mel Brooks' first attempt at a Robin Hood parody....
I will have to agree with you on number 1. I just watched the adventures of Robin Hood for the first time and it is by far the best Robin Hood movie I have ever seen. 2023 first time watching in my opinion still holds up to this day and will always be a major classic.

Richard the Lionheart
Erroll flying version is the best film ever made, the choice of actors in the roles, musical score, photography etc, nothing to fault.

I wouldn’t argue that at all. It’s amazing. Thanks for watching!
Great list and a top 5 which I think is spot on ! Robin and Marian has the best- and most moving - ending and is the best alternate take on a fictional character that I have ever encountered. The Costner film is everything it promised to be at the time, and the Morgan Freeman character is a great addition to the classic story. But I think Rickman is too over the top here as the sheriff... The 1938 version has to top the list for all the reasons you mentionned, as well as for the musical score which is one of the best ever ! It is also very dear to me, as I recorded the film on tape when I was a kid during a TV airing. It was a simple audio recording (we didn't have VHS at the time), but playing it back, I could see the images of the film dancing in my imagination. Thrilling ! When seeing the actual film again years later on blu-ray, I was stunned at how it still remains the perfect adventure movie (along with Captain Blood, which I hope Warner Archive will restore and release soon). Cheers !

The Seahawk (1940) is also amongst best of Errol Flynn's films. It along with The Adventures of Robin Hood and Captain Blood are 3 of the greatest adventure films ever made.
The only thing that could have made 1991 Robin Hood better is if Sean Connery made a cameo as King Richard ... Oh wait...
Kevin Costner wanted to use a British accent, but the Director told him not to use one
@The Cobwebs Channel Maybe you could Help me , im from Germany ,born at 90. At Eastern in early 90s where one Robin Hood movie where a Blacksmith cant pay the Tax and the Sheriff of nottingham orderd that the Blacksmith have to Handle a Hot piece of Iron , the Smith goes a few steps and breaks down.
You should read Sherwood by Parke Godwin. Puts him during the reign of William the Conqueror.
THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD is one of my top 10 favorite movies of all-time (#9), and is one of the top 2 greatest adventure movies ever made (along with RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK). To this list, I would find a way to add BANDIT OF SHERWOOD, with Cornell Wilde as the son of Robin, and 1920's ROBIN HOOD, starring Douglas Fairbanks.

I’d probably pick the same top 2 adventures movies as you! And I’ve seen Bandit of Sherwood Forest, and thought it was okay. It maybe should replace Men in Tights, but to be honest, I didn’t feel like rewatching it before making this. haha
Ever heard of Janosik? An old Polish TV series that's basically a Slovakian Robin Hood. It even got an HD restoriation Blu-ray with English subtitles called "Janosik: The Highland Robber."

I never have, but that is a fascinating thing to put on my radar! I’m going to look that up. Thank you!
I find the Patrik Bergin movie from 1991 is undeservedly underrated. I so like the focus on the power dynamics at the time, still dealing with the consolidation of power by the Normans - hence the French character names - and the harrowing of the north. It puts the outlaw status of the characters in the foreground.
I highly recommend " The Bandit of Sherwood Forest" it's a super fun Robin Hood movie.

The sequel to the Adventures of Robin Hood! I’ve seen it, and have it on DVD.
"Robin and Marian", I think, is kinda-sorta the Robin Hood version of Frank Miller's four-part "Batman: The Dark Knight" comic storyline from DC Comics. Btw, what did you think of the Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies cartoons "Robin Hood Daffy" and "Rabbit Hood"?
My favorite Robin Hood film? Rabbit Hood, starring Bugs Bunny.

Have you ever seen Robin Hood Daffy? Almost as brilliant.
somehow I ended up here after reading about LOTR's Dúnedain, and something of them reminded me of Robin Hood - and now I need to know the myth and legend itself
The 1938 film is so wonderful. Never gets old.
I've seen six of these so far; hopefully, I'll eventually see them all - big fan of the good Mr. Hood. My favorite, like yours (and most people's, I would imagine), is 'Adventures'; however, I also have quite a soft spot for the '80's show 'Robin of Sherwood', if you've seen that - and if you haven't, you should. It's not 'definitive' Robin Hood, exactly; it adds some fantasy elements to the mix, makes a character change or two I'm not wild about, and lacks that grand-scale swashbuckling feel, but Michael Praed really is quite good as Robin - he has this absolute sincerity to him at all times that makes you understand why this rag-tag band would be so devoted to him - and Nickolas Grace probably is my own personal favorite Sheriff; he's just got this snarling, hates-everybody feel to him that is perfect for the character. (Also, it was apparently a big influence on 'Prince of Thieves'.) Other than those? Well, I do love the Disney film (the second one), and from what I remember of 'Robin and Marian', it was pretty good, albeit a bit too melancholy for my tastes (of course, I last saw it when I was going to college, which arguably wasn't the right time in my life to do so; I might get more out of it now). Also, the old Douglas Fairbanks silent version, while very flawed in certain respects, has some good action and is just kind of enjoyably ridiculous, from what I remember.

Thanks a lot for this awesome comment! I don’t watch a lot of TV shows, so I haven’t seen Robin of Sherwood, but you’ve made it sound really appealing so I’m gonna look into how I can watch it. And if you check out Robin and Marian again, let me know your thoughts! I was really impressed by it.
My introduction was the Disney version but not too long after seeing it I remember my dad was channel surfing and we came across the Errol Flynn version and it was pretty good my only complaint is I wish Basil Rathbon’s character Sir Guy was the sherrif of Nottingham given he serves the same as him in the film. Also so we could get into the argument on whether Basil Rathbon or Alan Rickman were the Best Sherrif
Tried Prince of Thieves recently and couldn't get through it like I did the first time, though I think I only saw the second half ever. Not great.
My favourite one of All Time is Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves :-)

I love to hear this! That movie doesn’t get enough love.
I'm from Nottingham and haven't seen any, think the 1938 is the place to start lol
I’ve seen the Disney movie, Prince of Theives, and Men in Tights. Hard to say which one had the best Robin Hood but for personality, I’d go with the Disney one. I just love his carefree and goofy attitude but also knows when to get serious. I also assume that Robin is in his twenties given how he acts. Who do you say is the best Robin Hood?
@cobwebschannel

Gotta go with Errol Flynn on that one. But I do really, really love Costner.
I love Robin Hood. I agree with your top 3. I also really liked Kevin Costner as Robin Hood and Alan Rickman is of cause the best Sheriff of Nottingham. Adventures of Robin Hood is also very good move. I didn't really care about Ridley Scott's Robin Hood and I've never even heard of of Princess of Thieves - I would like to watch it sometime.
Okay; we've got a "Top Ten Robin Hood Movies"; now we need a "Top Ten Robin Hood Television Series."

I love watching classic movies. Because I’ve been doing it for so long, I’m always on the lookout for new movies. I watch several classics movies KZread channels (of which yours is one of the best) to get ideas. I walked away with two new ones to watch. Thanks! But… ranking Princess of thieves higher than the classic Disney Robin Hood story?! Really?! Peter Ustinov as prince John… Amazing!

I see you wore a green shirt for the vid.
You should see robin of sherwood tv series
Just my opinion the best Robin Hood movie is "challenge for Robin Hood " it is a good movie from 1967.
Not a bad list but your 5 and 4 shouldn't even be in contention, in my opinion. Maybe the Crowe one could be at 10... but I don’t count either of those films as real Robin Hood movies.
Loved your list! I think the only one I’d add is the 1922 Douglas Fairbanks film (silent swashbucklers are some of my favorite movies)!
I think in sword of Sherwood if they would have used the tv cast from the British series that starred Green it would have been better.
disneys Robin hood is better than any other Robin Hood’s with music, emotion, characters, and overall aesthetic but for general movie critic mindset you have to think this balogna, fox’s are better than people oodalaly golly what a day

What about the sword fight in the Mark of Zorro, between Basil Rathbone and Tyrone Power? Rathbone wrote in his autobiography, “Power was the most agile man with a sword I've ever faced before a camera. Tyrone could have fenced Errol Flynn into a cocked hat.”
