I grew up in the English Church. My mother was the organist. My father led the altar boys. I sang in the choir. Both my mother and father are dead and I am an old lady but these songs bring back so many good memories. Glory to God.

I am sitting with tears falling down my face listening to this beautiful Christmas music. I learned them all with my classically trained 28:01 father at the piano. Simply beautiful. Takes me back to England, my birth place. My family left England in December 1965 to live in America. We sailed on the Cunard Franconia and celebrated Christmas on board the ship with English crackers and paper hats After docking in NY Harbor, we took a bus to my my great aunt's in the Norfolk, VA area. While I was only 5 years-old at the time, I remember all the snow that had fallen there. One of my fondest memories is being woken up by my parents on board that ship, so that I could see Lady Liberty in all her glory. Both my parents served in World War II. My father had trained as a pilot/navigator for the British RAF in Winnepeg, Canada. He flew training missions which took him over the the Canadian Rockies and parts of North America. Leaving England for America was bittersweet for my parents, but they were embarking on a new, wonderous journey. Both my parents were great music lovers, and these songs remind me of treasured times together. Thank you for putting together this compilation. Blessings and Merry Christmas to everyone!!

@@Mercian-Lad That's an immature statement. The U.S. and many other Western European nations are just as much desired. All you have to do is to keep current in the news to realize that. And the sentiments that are being expressed aren't so much "Anglo" based, politically, socially or otherwise. The one commonality the views expressed here all have in common, are for the unique, beauty of these traditional English vespers and hymns. I think if anything, it's more a spiritual connection, particularly to the music and particularly during this time of year! As a black American, I've always enjoyed these hymns tremendously, and I don't have any "envy" of Great Britain at all, but I appreciate the comfort, beauty and devotion that these masterpieces are capable of conjuring up. within. That's the connection...not what you're saying. You'd do good to delve deeper when reading these comments and particularly when responding to them.

Growing up in Calabar, Nigeria in the 70s and 80s, these were the carols that heralded Yuletide every year. All the big shops and the radio stations played these hymns and everywhere one went there was mistletoe on doors, other holiday decorations and a thin harmattan haze that served as our snow here in hot and balmy Africa. I will never forget those days; and I deeply thank the British who God used to bring these to us to beautify the earliest years of an African child.

The carols are a wonderful "theme" that adds so much to all else that is "Christmas" each year. Traditions can mingle with grand results, as was seen in the influence of Prince Albert in the Great Britain of the 19th century and, of course, from the pens of great writers like Charles Dickens.

The 12 days of Christmas that end with Epiphany tomorrow December 6. It’s marvelous to slow down and concentrate on Christ during these 12 days. So it's uplifting to read positive posts of love and respect from other countries, particularly the US and Germany. Sometimes it happens, may be out of jealousy, but you are much more appreciated for your strong sense of belonging, your traditions and the way you conceive the unity of the nation. Even these carols show that. Europe has partly lost the idea of Christian God and things cannot work out well. Sometimes they are afraid of showing Christian faith, hoping to get approval from other religions but this doesnt improve society and it isnt true too . Many attitudes should be revised. Merry Christmas

In grammar school I was a choirboy at what I later learned was a very musically sophisticated Anglican church attached to my school in Westbury Park, Bristol. I learned and sang these carols and still remember the descants for some of them. "Once in Royal David's City" was always a favorite, you don't hear it much in the US. Also, "Away in a Manger" and "O Little Town of Bethlehem" had different melodies in the UK than in the US. I prefer the UK versions.

It's so refreshing to hear the First Nowell with 'Born is the King of Is-RAY-el' In Canada and other north American places they sing 'Is-RYE-el' which absolutely drives me crazy. You never hear newscasters refer to the current conflict as being in Is-RYE-el. So why sing it that way? Lovely to hear such wonderful singing and organ accompaniment.

It's a "hypercorrection": choir members sing latin texts when the pronunciation is "Is-rah-el" and then wrongly apply it to English texts. Luckily most musical directors are onto it and try to stamp it out in the UK.

I grew up singing these English carols in the Anglican church. They still form a huge part of Christmas and my identity. England has given us so much and even we, the non-English, can enjoy and share in that heritage. So please don't renounce these traditions and beautiful hymns, poetry and literature in the name of progress. People around the world share in this heritage and it would be such a shame to remove it. Merry Christmas and God bless everyone.

@@johndonson1603That is not at all true ... in no way are Christmas Carols going to be renounced. I adore them and listen to them a lot every Christmas even though I am no longer religious. Britain will forevermore remain a Christian country. I am very happy for it to remain as such. The alternatives are much worse! Taking this country away from it's Christian roots is equivalent to destroying it's heritage completely. A way will be found for this country to remain Christian by hook or crook! It cannot be otherwise. Being an Atheist in a Christian country is fine as opposed to say a muslim country. You would be suprised at the number of Atheists no matter how vociferous they are would rather this country retained it's Christian culture if push comes to shove.

@@rominiyi1385 You clearly misunderstood my comment, I’m an atheist myself but still enjoy hearing the traditional Carols of England that I grew up with in the 60s and 70s , the younger generations don’t care anymore though , and the Uk will become a Muslim country in a couple of decades through apathy and so called progressive policies , ie the replacement of the indigenous population. Fortunately by then I probably won’t be around to see it .

  • @rominiyi1385

@@johndonson1603 The UK will never ever become a muslim country. The government woke up unbelievably late to one fundamental fact and action they should have taken long time ago. Restricting benefits supporting children to two children per couple for everyone. One half of that benefits equation hasn't been addressed but it's still a powerful weapon in the governments armoury that they will deploy if they so choose. They have also cut benefits in half for immigrants. All these measures mean immigrants can't use benefits dished out commensurate to the number of children in a family to reproduce recklessly anymore. This was rampant in the not too distant past and watching successive governments studiuosly ignore this issue was mind boggling. Anyone with their head screwed on right would have realised that the government should have done this by the end of the 1970's at the latest. One of the things that was causing the population imbalance was successive UK governments turning a blind eye to this issue for decades on end as if burying their heads in the sand would not make the problem get bigger ... much bigger! The UK exists in Europe. Europe is Christian and does not at all want to become Muslim. The deep heritage of Europe is Christian, and by hook or crook, trust me, Europe and the the UK will always be Christian ...

These songs can't be better and they truly depict what Christmas means, unlike the rest of songs. I still have to go to Poland and Germany in Christmas, I probably would find something similar.
