@@xaamlucy His elo didn't drop. It was still 2805 but due to him breaking away from the FIDE and played in another organization (PCA or Professional Chess Association), his FIDE rating was temporarily "frozen". FIDE is the organization that the world recognizes who oversee professional chess stuff and the PCA which Kasparov played in for a few years was just a minor organization I think. I forgot the reason why Kasparov refused to play in FIDE which caused him to play in PCA.

All have been World Champions at some point. Tal and Smyslov were the most inconsistent amongst world champions (Although 1950s was the peak decade for Smyslov). Petrosian and Spassky were solid. Surprised that Gelfand and Ivanchuk were the fourth and fifth ever players to get to 2700 (after Fischer, Karpov and Kasparov) (Probably Botvinnik, Tal, Spassky and Korchnoi crossed 2700 in the live ratings) . First to 2800 was Kasparov, followed by Kramnik, Topalov, Anand and Carlsen.

This animated chart seems to display bizarre double standards: by listing "FIDE Ratings" between 1967 and 1971, despite the fact that FIDE did not start using the Elo Rating System (internally) until 1970, and did not publish such ratings until 1971. Presumably back-dated calculations, not ratified by FIDE, were used prior to 1971 (maybe to give enhanced prominence to GM Bobby Fischer within the chart). Yet circa Jan. 1993: GM Garry Kasparov's ratings start to plummet (off the chart) in rapidly reducing increments, as though he was losing games "left right and centre" to all and sundry (which he wasn't) simply because FIDE decided to "kick him out" for defying them, regarding arrangements for his scheduled World Championship match with GM Nigel Short (whom he crushed). Strewth everybody KNOWS that Garry Kasparov was continuously the highest rated active chess player in the world between 1986 and his retirement in 2005. So, Mr "Stat Star", you seem to be massaging the statistics according to dubiously fluid criteria that purport to be "FIDE ratings", regardless of whether FIDE actually published the data or not.

If Carlsen holds onto to number 1 spot 5 more years, I’d say his 15 years at #1 in today’s age more or less equal (or even outweigh) Kasparov’s 20 or so years at #1. Today’s players have access to an incredible array of software that allows for incredibly technical play, making it harder for any one person to retain the top spot.

Não tem ninguém de nenhum outro país representado neste vídeo ou em outros fazendo a mesma coisa. Kasparov was near his peak, Kramnik was very strong, Karpov was still very strong, Anand was getting close to his peak and Ivanchuk was underrated but as strong as any of those guys around that time. Then you had Topalov, who was still young, but older than Judit, and would eventually become the number 1 player in 2006 and again in 2008-2009 and FIDE World Champion, but not undisputed. 5 of those 6 guys were or would become number 1 players and world champions and the sixth was a number 1 talent (Ivanchuk). Definitely at least the top 15, based on how high you rank the current crop of players. I would put Carlsen and Caruana at their level, but not anyone else unequivocally. Ivanchuk was a top 10 all time talent, but just didn't have the mental strength/endurance or fitness to win a long championship match/tournament and become number 1. Topalov isn't quite on those guys' level, but probably around 25ish all time at his best. This was at a time when chess engines were still weaker than the top players and you couldn't just memorize the best moves, lines, positions, etc. Topalov still lost both of his games against Judit in Essent in 2006 held right after he lost his title in a reunification match to Kramnik but was still the number 1 player in the world. Judit was at a similar level and strength as a prime Nigel Short who did earn a championship match in his own right against Kasparov in 1993...
