Top 10 - Arcade Games of 1979

Ойындар

Here is my ranking for the Top 10 Arcade games that came out in 1979. Too many times I've seen videos that lump the pre-1980's era together... let's focus on this one year and see how we do!

Warrior by Vectorbeam had manufacturing issues to the point very few machines left their factory in working condition. The author of the game officially endorsed the MAME emulation of it because almost noone got to see the game back in the day.

That's crazy! Didn't know it was so low... partly because I actually remember seeing this first-hand in my local arcade. Scared me, honestly... loud and bright! Didn't realize it was a more rare arcade... seemed rather cool.

I had not seen much Lunar Lander when it was around but it still inspired me to write my own, perhaps inspired by later variations and clones, I'm not sure. In my version on the C-64, once you landed, you could get out and walk around to collect fuel pods, get back in and it went to the next level. Score was your accumulation of fuel. But you know, the original in vector looks so much better to me.

When I started going to arcades in 1979-1980, I remember playing the top 5 on this list (as well as 1978's Space Invaders of course). Monaco GP was my favorite of these games -- it felt like such visceral driving at the time. Much greater games would be coming in the early 80s!

Great video, I like that the lack of attention-seeking forced humour, just focussing on the content, nice one. That music at the beginning is cool, it's like a deliberate and pretty fun rip-off of Thunderstruck by AC/DC! Great memories, I was 10, discovering arcade games and by then probably we had Pong....

Love this video and I'm subscribing. one minor comment is that I wish the background music was not there, I found it distracting at times and even hard to listen to what you were saying at one point. apart from that, all's good!

Good point. Probably going to produce future videos without the music, so that I can leave original game sounds in more. I come from a video production background and sometimes feel like it's not "finished" without music, transitions, blah blah.. . but KZread reality is very different. Appreciate the input.

@@vghchannel Agree with Yeolde; leave out background music. I want to hear the old games sounds for nostalgic reasons. thank you for putting this together. going to look at your other vids of top games in other years after '79

Superb video! I love early arcade games! Monaco GP, Asteroids and Galaxian are my favourites fro,m 1979 too. Radar Scope is really 1979? Not 1980?

I go by the arcade-history.com site, and it says released Dec. 1979... so BARELY. Honestly could be either since that late in a year nobody really knows about it yet: www.arcade-history.com/?n=radar-scope&

I personally would have switched out sheriff and space invaders deluxe for star hawk and star fire , just my .02 cents

Thanks! That's valid. I guess I wasn't really considering the space invaders clones too much. Also, Star Hawk and Star Fire probably played much better in person than emulation... that's always an issue. Like if you'd never played the original vector Star Wars with the yoke controller... but only with a mouse... it'd be a totally different experience.

@@vghchannel exactly, there are certain games that can’t be emulated properly because of the controls like any game that would use a joystick instead of a track ball or my personal pet peeve trying to play defender or stargate without having the control layout exactly like the arcade but like everything else it’s just my opinion

Asteroids is 10x better than Galaxian. Galaxian was just a color SI with a little twist. I built an Asteroids controller for my Atari 2600 using some surplus parts from ETCO mail order and a cable from a broken Atari joystick (of which there were many in our household).

Asteroids is great, but personal preference is Galaxian. That's all. I just find it more fun myself.

Oops! I agree, should be at least in the honorable mentions... but certainly could fit in anywhere between #8-#10. Where would you put it?
