I remember when my mom would pick me and my sister up from school every Friday and we head straight to blockbuster's to rent snes games and movies. One of my happiest childhood memories. RIP block busters.

Honorable mention: Hanna-Barbera Seriously though. The once legendary animation studio were at a top of their game with their best classic cartoons such as Scooby-Doo, Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound, The Flintstones, The Jetsons, Johnny Quest and many more. By the 1990's, there were big changes in the company. Turner Entertainment bought Hanna-Barbera through a joint venture with Apollo Global Management in 1991 (Turner eventually bought Apollo's stake of Hanna-Barbera by 1993 becoming a full owner). By 1996, it merged with Time Warner (now Warner Bros. Discovery). Five years later (2001), following the death of the company's founder William Hanna, Hanna-Barbera closed their doors and folded to Warner Bros. Animation. When it comes to Hanna-Barbera, it's their wacky sound effects you hear in pop culture.

Then, the Warner Bros. Discovery merger happened, and the new CEO removed the majority of the HBO Max library, canceling potential animated shows or movies with tax write-offs, and releasing new movies or shows that no one asked for like Velma. They also ruined Cartoon Network with that merger too. 😢

@@BashayG7175 Back from the mid to early 2010s I usually stay up late to watch either Boomerang or Adult Swim. I mainly watched Cartoon Network just for The Clone Wars but missed out on most of the series due to couldn't afford that channel back then. Then, Disney+ was released, and back in the Summer of 2021, I watched an entire series just to catch up to Season 7.

Yes, Blockbuster was THE place to go to rent a film on a Friday or Saturday night. The sitcom Blockbuster might have thrived better had it been set in the 90's or 00's, during its heyday.

Yeah, which is why I'm not a fan of streaming services like Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Prime Video, Paramount+, and Hulu. They seem incredibly shallow compared to Blockbuster. Not to mention how unbelievably messy they've gotten lately.

@Aidan Hever At least Netflix will ask you if you are still watching without missing anything. Then gives you the option of them not asking again. I forever miss climatic endings because of Prime and Paramount.

I miss Borders so much. It was absolutely my favorite bookstore.

Borders closing still hurts my soul. Funny story I was in college when it shut down and I mentioned it in class the professor said he was going to miss it too. I also miss "Toys "R" Us" I remember getting their catalogue at Christmas going through it and circleing what we wanted, and going to the store to get gifts for my brothers, good times….good times

Blockbuster is really missed, but I can think of at least 2 honorable mentions: radio shack and circuit City

@@kellychuang8373 Today's generations seems to have lost the pride it takes to actually achieve success in something other than physical activity ( playing around) We're losing the real craftsmanship that furnished our homes, as well as the homes themselves. Virtually everything that was handcrafted is put in the mechanical hands of robots.

I wish Showbiz pizza would come back. Especially with Chuck E. Cheese now getting rid of animatronics unless you go to Disney/universal or live near a Rainforest Cafe it would be hard to see animatronics performing.

They sort of mention that CEC and Showbiz merged and they wonder who won the pizza war. Well, Showbiz won as the company remained Showbiz, only the stores all changed to CEC. They did so because CEC had better branding. I know because I worked at a location that went through the rebranding while in college. We changed the store to CEC, but we still had the Showbiz animatronics (which were far superior to CEC). Our paychecks came from corporate - Showbiz Pizzatime, Inc. I will agree, without the animatronics, it really isn't a CEC or Showbiz. Kids now a days are not interested in them anymore, though.

my first real job ever was working at a blockbuster. man was it fun. i was working there when the movie Elf hit DVD and as a christmas present that year all employees got the movie. i still have it.

@@mojo3318 Its a great movie and one of my fondest memories of working for them. The biggest though was when the horror movie 13 Ghosts came out. I used my employee perk to rent it for free when it first hit shelves and i LOVED IT. I started recommending it to people and all came back asking me to recommend another it was so good. As a kid that felt so great and i thank Blockbuster for that

Let's add Circuit City and in the near future Gamestop. Borders one still trips me out cause Barnes & Noble still surviving, if barely. If Blockbuster had bought Netflix, I always wondered if we'd still have Netflix, or if it would've eventually fallen, since we all pivoted to streaming, and BB wasn't built for that.

Thank you for putting Showbiz Pizza Place on this list. For me, this place was the essence of 80s nostalgia wrapped up in one pleasure filled package. The distinct and most delectable flavor of their pizza, the arcade games I remember the most fondly, and the tantalizing playlist of 80 hits in the background was one experience that summarized the most ecstatic moments of my preteen years!

Let us not forget Sears and Kmart, those two could be a video in and of themselves

I was also born in ‘95 so I know how you feel.

I loved Discovery Zone when I was young. It was one of "Blink and you'll miss it" situations. From its first location opening to it's last closure, it was 'a thing' for only 14ish years. Coincidentally enough, at one point in time the majority stockholder for Discovery Zone was Blockbuster, and before it went totally bankrupt, sold several store locations to Chuck E Cheese's owner, CEC Entertainment, inc. I remember one of its big themes before going out of business was Godzilla: the series. I remember they were always showing segments of episodes on the screens, and I vaguely remembered there were hardboard displays of the characters in the series as targets in the laser tag room. Another Company that isn't around anymore that I remember is Ames. Although I have been hearing talk of reviving the chain.

A company I remember a fried chicken chain based in California called Pioneer Chicken. It was competitive with KFC but it filed for bankruptcy in 1988 and being sold to Popeye’s soon after, there’s still 2 locations but it’s gone for the most part with the locations being turned into Popeye’s or being bought by other businesses

Shame that Gimbels isn't in existence anymore, it was a great place to shop. Elf even had the primary action take place at a Gimbels, despite it having been defunct 16 years by the time of the film's release.

I loved the GULF sign turning back when I was young. It was cool. I also remember SOHIO gas stations. Blockbuster was the place to go on weekends to hopefully pick up one of the newest releases. Borders is one I miss the most. Loved that store. Such great memories. Thank you! 😊

I think the two most missed companies are ToysRus and Blockbuster.

Fuck Borders… I tried to get a job there in the late 2000s to mid 2010s and they rejected me. Of course that might’ve had to to with the fact that the economy sucked at that time

i would add circuit city, radio shack and some other airlines like delta and twa. i miss blockbuster, even if the movie i wanted wasn't there, i could always find 3 or 4 others. it scares me that streaming, home delivery, carry out-- only restaurants and the like are slowly turning us into a nation of hermits.

Actually, TWA isn’t as gone/forgotten as you think. If you’re ever traveling to the JFK airport in Long Island, there’s a TWA hotel and museum. There’s areas made to look like the 1960s, and there’s a Connie plane that’s a bar lounge where you can have a drink. A lot of people visit that place (it’s great to see the terminal, the plane, and learn about TWA’s history).

Miss another movie rental store called Family Video. They survived the streaming wars, but all their physical locations went down when Covid hit. Technically still alive through online only. Another company I remember is flying Northwest Airlines before they merged with Delta. So sad to see some iconic multi billion dollar companies from our childhood that cease to exist.

What about Discovery Zone? It went out of business forever in 1999! And I was about 7 years old then! Of all the restaurant/playplaces I've ever been to as a kid, only it had those rolling tread thingies (which I would WAY LATER find out to really be a roller slide). It's been said it also had a zipline (never noticed). That just names a few things. And one more thing: Perfect Swing, down in Norman. It was another such place, and it came with what I didn't know to be punching bags in part of the playplace! Also inside was an arcade! There was also an outdoor part, and it came with two go-kart rides (one being kiddie go karts), mini golf, and a pool of bumper boats! Got hit by a tornado in, I think it was 2010 (at least I was no longer a minor then).

I remember attending a few birthday parties at my local Discovery Zone as a child in the 90s! I also remember the commercial that used to air on TV over 2 decades ago!

call me crazy, but I really want Blockbuster back. That was a huge part of my teen years, going and getting several horror movies to binge watch with friends over the weekend as well as loading up on movie theater candy and popcorn.

I worked at Blockbuster and Borders. I had already moved on from Blockbuster when they started closing, but I worked through the last day at Borders. Nothing left but one small shelf with some odds and ends. We all got together in the empty store and had ourselves a going away party. Loved working at both places and I'm sad they're gone.

I miss Borders! They had my favorite light novels and manga, of course I get them off Amazon now, but they were my go to place for books.

I had a birthday party at Showbiz pizza when i was a kid. That place was awesome! I think i even still have an old cup from there!

In Canada we lost 3 of our 4 major department stores (Sears, Woodwards (and their foodfloor) & Eaton's) Only The Bay exists and it is struggling (oldest department store/company ever) They are bringing back Zellers at some locations at it was it's cheaper side-discount store. Fields was their even lower store. I miss A&A music & HMV. Toys R Us still is in Canada. Toys and Wheels was our toy store before Toys R Us.

Javelin was nice. I miss my AMC Spirit, though. That thing was built solid like a tank. I sold it because it was rear wheel drive and I moved to the snowy hills of upper Michigan. I couldn't get up the hill of my driveway. I wish I would have picked up the Eagle, which was the 4 wheel drive version. I might still have it now if I had.

How ironic. I celebrated Showbiz Pizza Place on my fourth birthday in 1994. It's no wonder why the place seemed abandoned every time I visited outside during my childhood. And then, it was replaced by Italianni's in 2001. However, sometime in the 2010s, it was converted into a casino.

I don't know if these were everywhere in the US, but I miss Service Merchandise. I really like the idea of the showroom of items and then you'd order it either at a checkout or later through the in store computer and then go to the front of the store and watch it come down the conveyor. I thought it was a practical use of store space to keep everything in the warehouse and only have floor models taking up less space. Additionally, when they discontinued selling an item, if only the floor model was left, you could get a huge discount. I remember I bought my stereo there piece by piece when the floor models were discontinued. It took about three months, but I got a Pioneer system (tuner, equalizer, tape deck, and 6 disc CD changer) with Bose speakers for about one third the price. The only issue was you might not get a box and there might be some wear from usage. Mine were cosmetic mainly scratches on the top of each unit. All it took was a black sharpie and you couldn't see them anymore. Miss that store.

Toys R us On August 7, 2022, Toys "R" Us opened new locations in nine states: California, Georgia, New Jersey, Illinois, Nevada, Louisiana, New York, Maryland and Missouri. These stores are located inside Macy's stores and range from 1,000 to 10,000 square feet. The company plans to open a store in every Macy's location in the United States by October 15, 2022, just in time for the holiday season.

Man, I miss Toys R Us so much! It was my childhood store, and I bought so many Legos from there when I was a kid! I even frequented the store before it closed in 2017!

Kuwait had Showbiz Pizza, so many wonderful memories from the 90s. I Still remember every detail about it, from the place's design to the games that I played

When I saw 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY the first time in 1976, I was with my father and when he saw that Pan Am ran the space plane, he said "Figures it'll be THEM running it." Watching the film now, it's an ironic joke.

I remember Limited Too being somewhere to go for certain types of stuff (for me, it was Neopets plushies and merch; RIP the ability to buy them in store, even at Target). Now it's called Justice, and I think they even make outfits for PETS now? I wasn't into the girly aesthetic and didn't buy anything there except Neopets stuff, but I feel like Limited Too switched the Justice! For Girls or something. I miss Toys R Us though, and heck, even BlockBuster, since I could rent games there and find out if I liked it before attempting to purchase it for real. But also lol at how Amazon pretty much brought down multiple businesses in one fell swoop. :P

They really were companies when they faded out of existence, but rather divisions. I know they included AMC, but that was a company that disappeared as a company, not a division.

I live in West Virginia and there still is a Show Time Pizza (now called Billy Bobs Wonderland) in a town called Barboursville, About 20 mins east of Huntington and the Ohio Kentucky border. I’ve been there recently and the band is still playing.

I assume it was a franchised store that somehow got to keep the rights to use the characters. I worked for Showbiz during the change over and all corporate stores were forced to change to CEC branding, although the band remained in place for a few more years. The Rick-a-Fire Explosion was a much better band that CECs. Billy Bob, Goonie Bird, Beach Bear, Mitzy, Rolf, and Fats were just superior.

The downfall of Pan Am started with the Lockerbie tragedy, the gulf war was the final nail in the coffin.

ShowBiz Pizza actually bought Chuck E. Cheese. The reason they converted the entire chain is because ShowBiz didn't own the rights to the characters in the band, but Chuck E. Cheese did own the mouse. That's why they even kept the same jingle and just changed the words for the commercials.

I worked 10 years at Blockbuster Video. Best job ever.

There use to be a Borders, Toys R Us, and Blockbuster in my town. Borders was going out of business because people were buying ipods and liked them better than books. Now, a place called DoSpace is standing where Borders was. In another video, I learned about Chuck E Cheese's and Showbiz Pizza Palace mixing. Also, I've been to Chuck E. Cheese's when I was little! That place is still in my town and has changed a little. There use to be an old picture of Chuck E. and I heard that the animatronics there were removed because people found them creepy. I never did. In fact, when my sibling and I were little, we got on stage with them and I acted like an animatronic. By the way, I enjoyed the video!

That's true and part of the reason why they went under. That's part of the issue with specialty stores, their prices are generally higher. Borders and Barnes and Nobel were no exception. When you can get them elsewhere for cheaper, why buy it there?

I miss Borders. The one I went to and purchased from had a Seattle’s Best Coffee in a cozy upstairs area. Their version of the Frappuccino was superior to Starbucks’ and Peet’s’. And they had the most amazing Vanilla coffee shake. Ah, nostalgia!

As an almost 19-year-old who enjoyed the local blockbuster until 7 or 8 years old, I can tell you, none of my 18,19 or 20-year-old friends have ever been to one and they all had to ask me what Blockbuster was. I'm saddened that they will never experience the pure beauty of a blockbuster. Man, those were the good days.

One thing that made easier for some companies from those to close was the fact that they opened so many freaking stores,and their financial after so many years was harder to hold up because of their big fleets as well! We have a small toy store in greece from 1946 which was from the day i was born in the 79s with us and still running its business smoothly after so many years.I say that if you want a healthy business to grow to make some few stores and not so many to be able to hold on your feet.Especially those days which online stores like amazon are exists is even more harder to compete!

Tbf Toys R' Us actually never left. They just went to Canada. And didn't Macy's bring them back in their stores recently? 🛍️

Not all Showbiz Pizzas turned into Chucky Cheeses. One in Barboursville WV still exists as Billy Bobs Wonderland.

Yeah, Jason mentioned this, too. I have to venture a guess that this location was a franchise store that somehow got to keep the rights to the branding and characters. All corporate owned stores were forced to switch branding in the late 80s and early 90s. I worked for the company during that time. Showbiz Pizzatime, Inc was then the parent company to CEC.

Barnes & Noble! I miss having a bookstore in this one-horse town! I also miss TCBY!

Us Canadians had another option besides Blockbuster with Rogers Video. Good times getting to rent an N64 game for the weekend after a long week of school.

AFAIK, Gulf is now a franchised brand of fuel stations, like Holsum is to commercial bakery. Where I live after a big refinery fire on Caribbean Petroleum (franchisees until then) and subsequent bankruptcy in '09 it was returned to the owners by the Court. The owners then franchised the brand (but didn't buy the refinery, which was sold at a Court Auction) to Best Petroleum, who is today's franchisee in my area.

I remembered that Qubo shut down on February 28, 2021 and I grew up watching a ton of stuff on Qubo.
