Top 10 Alternatives to LEGO - Best LEGO Compatible Brands

Kazi sets: s.click.aliexp...
Cobi sets: bricktanks.co....
Oxford sets: www.am-redirect...
You can get most of these from either their own websites, or Amazon, eBay or Aliexpress. I’ll links down below to the different brands in case you’re interested in checking any of them out. Some of these companies make LEGO copies or designs that are very close to LEGO, which I do not endorse, this review is about their original set designs. Lets start the list in no particular order.
Oxford - South Korean company. I’ve seen big sets including Titanic and other ships, The Eiffel Tower, an HGV truck. They also make smaller military, police and transport sets, as well as Disney and Hello Kitty apparently! I’ve built the Titanic and it’s some of the best LEGO compatible sets I’ve come across. Great bricks that are as good quality as real LEGO, comprehensive instructions, beautiful packaging, and most importantly, well designed models. Also, the company owns Kre-O, which is another fake LEGO manufacturer.
Sluban - Many Sluban kits are just Chinese copies of Oxford kits with some small changes and cheaper quality plastic. For example, they do their own version of the Oxford Titanic kit, but they’ve put propellers on it.
Cobi - A Polish company with really good sets and good quality bricks. This is often peoples’ favourite LEGO alternative. They have an odd range of products, mostly military vehicles and military themes, but they do have regular vehicles like planes, and buses and ships. They even have a Nativity scene kit.
LOZ & Nanoblocks - These sets, often of little figures or buildings, are made out of lots of tiny bricks, sometimes called nano bricks. They are not LEGO compatible. While these models look quite good, they’re a bit boring to put together for me, and too fiddly for my big fat hands. But if you’ve got the patience and the eyesight, there are so many sets by these companies that you’re bound to find something you want to build.
Kazi - They focus mainly on military and city sets, including trains. Lower quality than Cobi, and some of the parts are shockingly cheap. However, a good brand in you’re a fan of tanks, as their models are detailed and well-designed. Note that Kazi mini figures are famous for how awful they are.
Enlighten - Originally they released LEGO kits will small alterations, but they’ve branched out into their own designs, which are quite popular. The build quality is excellent. They used to make trains which are now sadly discontinued.
Xingbao - I mentioned them in my last top 3 video but they’re worth mentioning again. They make MOCs by experienced designers, producing some really cool looking kits. The only let down is they use Lepin bricks, which are not as well made as LEGO, and a lot of people have a problem with Lepin as it makes exact clones of LEGO kits.
GUDI - Superb quality bricks and some of the sets around 2015 are really well designed, especially the sci-fi or military kits. But they also do a lot of city stuff and a space shuttle, Again, their mini figures suck.
Sembo - They do a lot of LEGO cloning, but they are have an amazing original selection of modular buildings, both small and large, and a few vehicles. They are a little dodgy when it comes to the branding they imitate but the kits are really so varied and unlike any other brick company that it makes me want to build my own “LEGO compatible” city.
MOCs - So this isn’t a brand, but at rebrickable.com and other sites you can find some extraordinary designs by really talented people - designs that you couldn’t buy from any of the designers in this list. If you’ve got a LEGO collection, then usually you can use a site like bricklink to build an inventory of the bricks you own so that you can see which ones you need for the MOC.

As someone who used to have legitimate LEGO sets as a kid, I just tried out other LEGO clones this year. So far, I liked the military sets that are churned out by GUDI and Kazi as LEGO won't venture in that genre anyway. Will try to buy Enlighten's sci-fi tanks and Xingbao's tavern at the end of the year.

In my opinion, calling very creative brands like Cobi or Mega Bloks rip offs of Lego is just stupid since they make their own sets with their own ideas. However, brands like lepin are rightfully rip offs.

Oxford - Planning to check them out. Sulban - Used to suck. Now, they're pretty decent. Nanoblock - Too small and no military sets. Cobi - Still too expensive for me. Enlightenment - Not the best. Gonna avoid them as much as possible. Kazi - Used to suck as well. Now they're pretty good. Check out their M1 Abrams. Sembo, Gudi, Shingbao - No military sets? No thanks. 😛 Brands you should check out: Doll, DuoLePin, S brand, Decool, and 将LeLe (All Chinese brands, and some of them do have clones.)

Whilst cloning is not morally right, The trouble is people still want to buy Lego sets that are no longer in production (they were around before they started the hobby) and the only way to do that is to pay 3 or 4 times what those sets originally retailed for, and that money doesn't go to Lego, the other companies are doing something which Lego should be doing, producing stock that people still want to buy but can't because Lego won't make it anymore.

Kevin Peterson not a bad person, but a clever one, that way you will end up with a quality construction without flaws that will hopefully cost you less that what you would pay for the original complete set, it’s like buying a used Mercedes, the company doesn’t get the money (unless buying from a merc dealer) but you still get a great quality car for a better price than what it would cost to buy brand new, if you brought a Chinese made clone of say the C class it probably wouldn’t drive as well, and certainly would not have the build quality or reliability.

Quality aside, it would be far easier to just MOC in a mix of whatever contruction toy that is compatible. No need to distinguish between brands, just mix them all together. I foresee this trend coming. All that is needed is a name for it.

What kinds of tests could he do to compare the brands we find? Or what kind of tests did you do to compare the brands? In our local stores we found Laser Pegs, Cobi and Max building bricks. Is there a scenario in which you think the other brands bricks would be preferable to Lego bricks? Thanks for all the information in your videos! They have been great!

They work in partnership with the tank museum in Bovington so the models are pretty spot on because they have the real specs from the museum. The brick quality is pretty amazing only the plate bricks are more bendy but the mini figures suck tho in my opinion . I will always stick to lego but for ww2 tanks I will buy cobi.

I am wondering why lot of people don't like the mini figures, I prefer them even to the Lego ones, because they have a lot of different faces which aren't so similar like the Lego figures and they even have more "realistic" legs and arms! :)

SamuraiMotoko Actually I don’t hate any other brand that is not Lego. Whilst I support Lego I recognise when other brands make their own sets or when they make fake sets based on what Lego makes. There is a difference between making your own ideas for sets then just copying what another company makes.

Hello, I just see on aliexpress this "lepin" i first thought that really was cheap lego but at a closer look i saw "lepin" and read that it was kind of lego but cheaper and lower in quality. Lego are really expensive so as a "crash test" i bought an AAT (from the droid army) on this site. It was low coast, i don't have this one yet so it will be the first (and maybe last, we will see) try. I'm wondering, if Lepin won't be satisfiying, of course i'll be back to Lego, but i really want to create huge collection of star wars set. (Problem still the same : it's very expansive...) As an exemple, i was looking for this AAT in blue version, from the clone wars. When it was still in stores, the price was about 30€, Something like that.. and now 200€ on Amazon... Is there a way to find lego but cheaper? I mean a price that is possible for everyone, even if the price is higher than the store. Thanks for reading and i hope you have a solution to offer, can't wait to build again ! See you guys !

XingBao are still likely violating LEGO design patents on individual elements since they just clone the parts rather than design them from scratch. For example, if they use certain types of arches and modified bricks that are more complex than just the original brick system.

I think it's actually a stronger case since they have actual design patents in place, but the set designs are only more loosely protected by copyright. LEGO also has a patent on the use of numbered bags to assist in assembly !!?? Some patents that granted are indefensible though. I think Amazon actually received a patent for taking pictures of things against a white background for use on the internet ! www.techdirt.com/articles/20140507/04102327144/us-patent-office-grants-photography-against-white-background-patent-to-amazon.shtml

What if Lego is making copies of itself? Lego is very expensive so it is not affordable by everyone. Reducing prices will kill Lego brand value so they are selling same thing under different name to everyone to establish economical strength. This is one silly conspiracy theory but I give a little shot. The pieces are incredibly the same and they go together without any error. So Lepin will not harm Lego, Lego buyer will buy Lego anyways. But people like me, who are not able to afford sets easily, will go for Lepin. I have more than 50 big Lego classic sets. Lego nowadays is not the real Lego and it is much more economical oriented. So, I prefer buying Lepin for 50 usd instead of 200. Especially the train sets. There is no difference other than Lego prints on the studs. You cannot distinguish them between each other at a distance of 1 meter.
