Hickson's "Sleeping Murder" is the best adaptation ever IMHO. And having the newest adapation of Murder on the orient express on the list is just ridiculous

INSULTING is the word that springs to mind! Ms. Hickson was a Superlative Miss Marple and for her not to even receive a MENTION is indeed an insult and Sad!

Anyone who leaves out Joan Hickson and does not have David Suchet as #1 should not be judging anything to concerning Agatha Christie

Whoever compiled this list needs to find another line of work. In the 1940's, Joan Hickson appeared in the stage version of Christie's "Appointment with Death." Dame Agatha herself wrote a note to Ms. Hickson, saying "I hope one day you will play my dear Miss Marple." When the author tells you that you'd be perfect to play the character, there's no better endorsement.

The unmentioned BBC version of And Then There Were None in 2015 was outstanding and demonstrated how utterly timeless and continually adaptable she is -- the background on what was going on in the world (and in the writer's 'atmosphere') when the novel was written was absolutely fascinating.

Where is Joan Hickson as Miss Marple? She was the ULTIMATE version of the character in the BBC adaptations in the late 80s and early 90s. And the Hickson series stuck to the novels without making any absurd changes (nor sticking Miss Marple in stories which didn't originally feature or mention her).

Kenneth Branagh's films are terrible. You do not mess with Christie's work

David Suchet as Poirot is untouched and it’s extremely strange not to have it as #1

Let's reframe that. You PREFER David Suchet and think it is strange that his inaccurate portrayal (it is very inaccurate most of the time), and the inaccurate adaptations, didn't beat out superior films and portrayals of Christie characters. What seems strange to me is that you assume that your biased opinion should be everyone else's opinion. Once you read ALL of the Poirot books, you will see that David was fun to watch, but wasn't the closest or the best. He played the character off book.

Sorry all you nay sayers that David Suchet was not the best interpretation of Poirot. Agatha Christie’s family came right out and said he was! And, if you read the books, listen to the AudioBooks, which a fo and have, you will discover that the books will corroborate that! Oh, and Agatha Christie herself wanted Jane Hickson to play Marple, seeing in her the quintessential old lady sleuth she created. Who can argue with the Author herself and her family. It’s too bad that Hickson, already in her eighties when she started acting the part of Miss Marple, passed away after season 3. Yes they did change the stories, although Hickson’s series 1,2 & 3 did not. But it was fun comparing the book version to the TV version to check out the differences. My favorite Marple is 4:50 From Paddington and they even changed the Second TV version from the Hickson one😂. Instead of getting annoyed I just enjoyed the differences since nothing was lost in the acting because each of the actresses portraying Miss Marple were great actresses who had more than earned their OBE after their names.

The fact David Suchet’s Murder on the Orient Express was far superior to the film versions seems to have been overlooked.

The 1974 version of Murder on the Orient Express is what got me into reading Agatha Christie! I was a little girl and it was Christmas Evening. Some friends of the family dropped by after dinner and along with my family we all went to the movies on Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn, the lines were wrapped around the block. Such an exciting experience for a child my age! Been a Christie fan ever since!

There is only 1 Poirot. David Suchet.

With due respect to all the great actors that have played Poirot, it is difficult to find a better interpretation than that of David Suchet. Such a professional and true to the book actor. You also left out the excellent Miss Marple portrayed by Joan Hickson and the brilliant one by Geraldine McEwan, who introduced a very appropriate touch of humor to the character. Think your list merits a serious review 🧐

How David Suchet did not get Number 1 is so Criminal even Poirot would struggle to crack the case. As stated he is the only one to have played the titular Belgian Sleuth in an adaptation of every Christie story to feature the detective. He surely deserves the accolade for that. I think we could use a similar list for Sherlock Holmes adaptations

@@TarotMage true personally I think the best for Holmes is either Rathbone or Brett (however like Suchet I sway towards Brett for their longevity and coverage of the character)

One of my favorite (series of) adaptations is the BBC radio version with John Moffat as Poirot.

Just not a fan of Albert Finney's portrayal of Poirot. I wouldn't even put him above Kenneth Branagh or Peter Ustinov. To put him above David Suchet is just plain blasphemy.

I can understand "Murder on the Orient Express" being on Top, but I'd have "Agatha Christie's Poirot" way higher in the ranking, and what baffles me the most is not having the impeccable 2015 version of "And Then There Were None" in here at all.

You can’t beat David Suchet. Branaugh does fine but Suchet IS poirot

Brannagh also isn't as good as Ustinov (my personal favourite Poirot) and Albert Finney. I actually don't enjoy Brannagh playing this role at all.

@@shell150675 yeah. I feel Branagh’s poirot is a bit too cold and jaded. Suchet has a bit more humanity. I haven’t seen the other poirots so I can’t comment on them

My favorite adaptation is Evil Under the Sun with Peter Ustinov. I know it isn't exactly accurate, but I enjoy it anyway! In fact, I enjoyed all of the films you listed, even though they aren't always accurate either. This is a great list.

2015 And Then There Were None should've made the list

Interestingly what ITV did with Poirot, they also did with Sherlock Holmes. The actual stories adapted for television. This series should be at number one. Clearly the writers of this list, prefer films and have never really watched the ITV series, which also features genuine art deco locations, houses and apartments, plus furnishings, just as their Holmes adaptations used Victorian locations, etc.

Perhaps the writers of this list have actually read Agatha Christie's books and realize that Suchet's portrayal was NOT accurate, the adaptations had MAJOR changes in them in terms of location, characters, and plot. Your silly statement that the ITV Poirot series should be number one on the list because it "features genuine art deco locations, houses and apartments, plus furnishings" shows that you are grossly unfamiliar with Agatha Christie's Poirot stories as she wrote them, and HIM! Most of the Poirot stories DID NOT TAKE PLACE IN THE 1930'S. In addition, anyone who has read Poirot books knows that he detested curves and unnecessary embellishments. He wouldn't have lived in the flat that Suchet's character lived in. He wouldn't have dressed the way Suchet was dressed. He wouldn't have had "art deco" decorations or furnishings because, as Christie described, he preferred everything to be square, not curvy. Visitors even commented on how there "wasn't a curve in the place" when visiting his flat. Just because you LIKE Suchet's interpretation, and just because he and the media folk went out of their way to promote the series as being closest to the books doesn't mean they are.

I loved everything with Peter Ustinov ❤

But how can Poirot by Suchet not be in the top three? It's ridiculous.

Because the other films were better. Just because you prefer him doesn't mean he was the best. You may like a certain type of food, that doesn't make your choice "the best".

No 10 wouldn't have made the list at all for me... But I can see why some like it.

Finney's Murder on the Orient Express is superb in every way. One personal favourite moment is the way the film score builds up on the scene on the train departing (a real steam hauled train not a semi-CGI hybrid) it feels just perfect. The only thing I would potentially lift from the Branagh version is Johnny Depp's Ratchet/Cassetti performance which to me is fantastic, not saying that Richard Widmark doesn't do a great job in the Finney version though :)

I like the background music you used that was also used in doctor who at leased once, i think in the episode on the library planet and the aliens that killed people only if they went into the dark.

The most recent tv version of the Pale Horse with Rufus Sewell was such a change after the Julia McKenzie version i couldn't get into it.

2015 And Then There Were None adaptation is perfect, The most amazing mini tv-series I've ever seen. Vera's portrayal was exceptional!

I've seen that on KZread and it was really good as well as grizzly for not only does it stay close to the original story but it truly shows how almost everyone got dark secrets. Second only to the Russian adaptation of the story.

@@georgeray1906 I'm Russian and I, honestly, hate Russian (well, Soviet) adaptation - so unnecessary fast-paced (like they only sat for the dinner and immediately got their "accusations") and actors are so ugly I cringe. And that r*pe scene? Like wtf 😨

1976 Murder By Death :)

Surprised that David Suchet's Poirot is at #5. Thought it was going to be in the top 3. Will admit that Albert Finney was great as the character as well.

8:10 Man, that flower afro was definitely a choice, but I can't look away from it.

As someone who has read every Christie novel several times, I have one major disagreement with this list. The inclusion of the Kenneth Branagh new version of Orient Express is ridiculous. Any comment about his version of Death on the Nile should be extremely negative. He clearly does not understand the appeal of Christie's work, so maybe he should have made similar movies and not pretended they were based on her books. Her heirs who approved these disasters must be money-hungry and should be ashamed. Finally, I consider Evil Under the Sun as #1, in part due to Maggie Smith performance.

100% agree with you. His new films might look good, but the content is nowhere near as good as older adaptions. Also agree with you about Evil Under the Sun, it's so good!

Honestly I don't really like And Then There Were None (1945) adaptation, although I understand, why the changes were made. Christie wrote a play based on her book, and this movie is based on a play. And a play has completely different ending to the book. The book's ending is so brilliant, that this version hurts me.

David Suchet is my favorite Poirot. He should be in top 3.

As a big fan of 'Pwawo fiwms' I'm really looking forward to Death in Venice!

In my opinion the TV adaptation of And Then There Were None was a lot better than the 1945 film.

Agatha Christie is the best adaptation and I'm big fan of Kenneth Branagh and i had a movie of Murder on the orient express back in 2017 and he is the best actor and director and he did Death on the Nile 2022 and Question for you and how come is another Murder on the orient express 1974 before Kenneth Branagh?

AND THEN THERE WERE NONE (1945) was way above MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS; others below cite Joan Hickson as Miss Marple, but it bears repeating. And repeating. Especially with AGATHA CHRISTIE'S MARPLE making the list with it's trite 'We're actually much too cool for this' vibe.

As much as I agree that many of the older adaptations are superior to the younger (I'm talking to you Kenneth Branagh) I find And Then There Were None an exception: The 2015 BBC miniseries is the best adaptation of that book. Unfortunately the following adaptations by screenwriter Sarah Phelps were just exploitative. Speaking of And Then There Were None - the 1987 USSR Version stays very true to the source material too.

Kenneth Branagh is not Poirot. Suchet is! and maybe Albert Finney (Murder o. t. O.E.70's)..... but NOT Kenneth Branagh. Bad photoshop, filtered movies. Bad scripts, mostly boring actors, and bad CGI... and Kenneth Branagh is so not Poirot.

They did not adapt every single Poirot story, only about a third of the Labours of Hercules was adapted and the Lemesurier inheritance was not adapted.

That's why I dont believe watchmojo. They have a flair to disappoint the audience.

And then they were none from 1946 is great. Liked the same story in a new BBC series from a few years ago too. Branagh movies are a bit boring/flat.

She was, and I simply misread it. Mistakes sometimes just slip through.

To be fair, it's not like the 2020 version of Death On The Nile had much of a choice about the CGI. It was 2020 after all. A litrle pandemic was going on making travel to Egypt impossible.

I think Kenneth Branagh should quit trying to play Proirot, and stick to Shakespeare. His take on Murder on the Orient Express was the worst adaptation I have ever seen.
