    Red Dwarf suffered the double blow of Chris Barrie and co-writer Rob Grant quitting at roughly the same time... fair play to Doug Naylor for carrying on the series but the scripts have never quite been the same since, even with the return of Barrie

    Absolutely. The standard of writing from series 7 onwards is not a patch on series 1-6. It baffled me why he left for Brittas as Brittas was about as funny as toothache.

    It always seemed to me like Naylor was better suited to writing for children. Red Dwarf moved from the low budget, esoteric, cult appeal of the first 4 seasons, through in my opinion, the peak that was season 5, to the polish of season 6, but throughout, the scripts were mostly clever and tight. Seasons 7 onwards were, by comparison, panto. It was good when Barrie came back, but it never felt the same. Silly walks and silly faces, and somehow everything felt plasticcy. That's the only way I can think to describe it. Also, I think it was a mistake to bring Kochanski back without Clare Grogan on board. I didn't think much of Chloe Annett's performances, and she didn't even attempt a Scottish accent despite confirming the canon that she is from the Gorbals.

  • @blatherskite3009

    @blatherskite3009

    7 ай бұрын

    True. There's a sharpness to the Grant/Naylor scripts that's not quite there anymore when it became just Naylor. There are still some great ideas and nice character moments, but (as Ozzpot said) there's a whiff of panto to it that wasn't there before. Not breaking any new ground anymore, and content to just cruise comfortably in familiar territory.

    I'd love to know the real reason why Chris Barrie left Red Dwarf. There was something deeper going on there. Equally, I'd love to know what brought him back. I mean, he properly left. It wasn't just a hiatus. I'm also curious as to why the BBC axed Red Dwarf after series eight. It didn't make sense. Yes, the show had declined in its critical acclaim through series' seven and eight. But series eight, despite the split in opinion from fans, brought in absolutely massive ratings. The highest in the show's history by far, and even broke records on being the highest ratings in BBC Two's history. So why was it cancelled? Couple that with the VHS tapes being very financially lucrative, it raises questions as to what politics were going on behind the scenes for both Chris Barrie to quit, then return, and the BBC to also call time on a show which was at the height of ratings.

    I think this video is wrong to say he left Red Dwarf to concentrate on The Brittas Empire because that latter also ended around the same time (final episode in February 1997, one month after the episode Rimmer left Red Dwarf). From memory - I was only 10 at the time so this is a little hazy - Barrie started a new sitcom called 'A Prince Among Men' and I expect he left/ended both the other two shows to concentrate on this. However I seem to remember A Prince Among Men bombed spectacularly and got cancelled, and so Barrie returned to Red Dwarf for series 8.

    On the series 7 dvd there is a documentary and Chris explained that one of the reasons he chose to leave was because he was tired of the long shoots and constant re-shoots. The previous series production in particular was very difficult and had a lot of problems because it was moving more towards a sci-if adventure series and since he was dividing his time with RD and The Britas Empire it was tiring for him. So he decided to stick with Britas because it was a more traditional sitcom show. He also landed a supporting role in Tomb Raider which was pretty big for him. Ironically, in the Red Dwarf series 8 documentary, he explained that even though Britas was a more conventional sitcom, he realised nobody on Britas cared as much about the production side of the show like they did on Red Dwarf, and he realised he would never in his life be a show like Red Dwarf where you always laughed so coming back was an easy decision for him.

    As I understand that one, both the actor playing Blake and the actor playing Avon thought that the conflict between the two characters was unsustainable and at the end of the second series one of them would have to go. No personal animosity off-screen, it was just the way the character arcs seemed to be going. Gareth Roberts was happy to go off and do other things (and I suspect the Producers, righty, thought Avon to be the more interesting character of the two). He returned for the final episodes of both the seasons he wasn't in, but Blake's bloody demise at the end of Season Four was partly at Roberts's request because he wanted there to be no ambiguity about whether Blake was really dead.

    Seasons 7 and 8 are considered low points for Red Dwarf, due to Chris Barrie being absent for most of the former season, and the show feeling less like a sitcom and more like a standard sci-fi adventure show in those years. The first Dave season, Red Dwarf: Back to Earth (Season 9) also has its problems, though fans usually cut it a little more slack since it was produced on a very short schedule with even less budget than usual. Kristine Kochanski, who was introduced as Rimmer's replacement in Season 7, is an incredibly annoying character who sucks the fun out of any scene she's in. Fortunately, aside from a brief cameo in Back to Earth, the Dave episodes have completely ignored the character, and Doug Naylor has said she probably won't ever return. Red Dwarf is still a great series, but Season 7 was not that good Season from a good TV show. Two episodes from Season 7 that I like Stoke Me a Clipper and Blue. I'm glad that Rimmer was back in Season 8.

Considering she was LWT's highest paid star, it was a bad way to go. But then years later she was quoted as saying how unprofessional she was that night. Funny how she never got another show with ITV after that!

    Yeah. And from memory she at least gave more notice than Dan Stevens that she wasn't renewing the contract, he decided later on that he also wanted to leave the series, which is why Matthew ended up in a sudden tragic car accident. It was still really emotional to see the two characters die, though.

    Chris Barrie being absent from literally two thirds of one season out of is it 13 seasons now? hardly counts as 'quitting' I would personally say. As I've heard it said in the documentaries on the DVD's of each season (which are great btw) Chris was just finding it difficult to do both Red Dwarf and Brittas at the same time. So took a sort of mini hiatus from the Dwarf to get Brittas finished. I know in hindsight when bingeing the entire lot things can look different to when it was broadcast. But when doing that you hardly even notice Rimmer missing to be honest. And who could begrudge Chris the time off to make Brittas? A sitcom I personally consider on a par with Red Dwarf. AND we got Chloe Annett to look at for a few episodes.

And whilst the actors playing Kelly and Seth really tried to make that romance work, they did not have the chemistry. Season four had no direction at all, so I didn';t bother with the fifth.

So he thought big headedly that he would rather do the crap sitcom where he had the “starring role” over the classic that is Red Dwarf? Well that is a surprise! And it never suffered for his “brief” departure anyway! It was when they decided to bring back the entire crew that had been wiped out in the radiation leak that did it for me! GMB figures have recovered over time, and desite Morgan's claims, no, his show doesn't perform better than GMB. Indeed, his show and the channel as a whole lag behind the indescribably pisspoor GB News; challenging ITV / BBC seems like a pipe dream. Morgan is what he always was, a blowhard who confuses having people's attention for having their respect. Normally I'd say he'd be better suited to the US TV market but he's already demonstrated that he'd do no better over there.

    @@jane1975 Just out of interest, if a rival channel had hired several current and previous Labour Ministers and MPs, plus a smattering of voices from the far left, would you consider them a left-wing channel? My guess is that you would (I wouldn't disagree). So a channel that has Rees-Mogg, had Esther McVey, has just hired Boris Johnson and also had Farage and Laurence Fox looks pretty right-wing to me (that's without even mentioning explicitly right-wing journalists). We've seen the "we've got some lefty presenters trick before" with Fox. Just having so left (or more accurately, not explicitly right-wing) presenters doesn't change the reality; you look at which presenters the channel pushes, and you look at who has control of the network. GB News is a right-wing channel, and as with Fox in the US, that's a reaction to all the other channels being... not that. GB News, like Fox before it, attempts to perpetuate the myth of a media dominated by the left, but the reality is far more subtle and complex. There is a general - but only general - tendency for national journalists to be relatively socially liberal, but they also tend to be conservative on fiscal issues. There is also a tendency for the right to define anything with which they disagree as "left" or even "far left" (some on the left do the same with the "right" and "far right"). This leads to bizarre characterisations such as seeing Cameron and Osborne as "centrists" despite an objectively right-wing (if unsuccessful) record in government.
