Bonus points for enduring it for so long
I feel so bad for Jim Carry cause 8 hours is nearly a Whole day, and that movie Tarnished his will for acting, until the Sonic movies came along
It doesn't surprise me one bit that Jim Carrey was number 1 on this list. Hell after everything he endured while having his makeup put on during the making of HTGSC, I hope they paid him extra for all of that. But despite all of that, At least he still completely nailed his role as the Grinch!

Doug Jones for being a super professional in extreme costuming in many roles. I have never heard of him complaining about the makeup process; what a professional!
What about Doug Jones in damn near everything? And Ron Perlman?
Tim Curry in Legend as Darkness for the win!

How about Robbin Williams in Mrs. Doubtfire?
Ray Bolger, was the original Tin Man, and wanted to be the Scarecrow so Buddy and Ray switched the roles.
For Davies as Gimli, the adhesive used with the beard also took a fair amount of skin off due to an allergy too.
Boris Karloff, Frankenstein's Monster. 4 hours to put on, 2 hours to take off.
If we're talking elaborate makeup, we need to mention Ron Perlman. Not only did he endure the makeup for Hellboy and Quest for Fire, he also had to go through some pretty intense prosthetic makeup for the TV show Beauty and the Beast.

PRACTICAL EFFECTS BEFORE CGI That's my motto

But remember that some practical effects come at a cost as shown with this video. These actors here had to go through a lot of pain and agony for their roles.

A really scary devil and as Pennywise too 😮
Thank you to all of these actresses & actors for their work.
You should add Virginia Hey who played Zhaan from Farscape. After wearing the blue makeup for 3 seasons, it caused her health to declined (as her kidneys would bleed).
There’s one entry you forgot: Dick Tracy. Apparently, the actors found the makeup process to be time consuming and a little taxing. Everyone, including William Forsythe as Flattop, had to sit in the chair for hours at a time and Forsythe said that the process put him in the proper mood to play Flattop, which worked in his favor because it’s an underrated performance.
Jim Baker originated the use of latex prosthetics.
Jim Cavizel lost so much sleep for his makeup for "The Passion of the Christ". He would normally have 2 and a half to 3 hours sleep.

What is Minnie Mouse’s favorite car? It is a Minnie van.
Tim Curry's Darkness deserves all the LEGEND awards. Such an icon!
Oh that Jim
The makeup artist behind The Grinch had to go to therapy after dealing with Jim Carrey. We better be crediting the artists too.
Gonna give a shout to the two you missed (❤). Boris Karloff had scars on his neck for years after playing Frankenstein's monster, and Lon Chaney's transformation in the Phantom of the Opera had him wearing a harness to yank his nose back that left scars. Now, where's my ERB Rick Baker vs Jack Pierce? Someone call Disney....
I know it's TV, but can you imagine what Lou Ferrigno went through everyday for 5 years to do a 1 hour show.
I wouldn't be able to handle the makeup
Would you count hair coloring? Wolfgang Schaeffer, the kid who played Lincoln Loud in the live-action content of “The Loud House”, used white hair coloring for “A Loud House Christmas”, but it caused his hair to fall off, so he had to use a wig for “The Really Loud House”.

I see nothing about the hell Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney, or his son went through with their makeups.
Mike Myers as The Cat in the Hat. Imagine having all that fur and running around in sunny weather.
The first recipient for best make was actually Rick Baker for An American Werewolf in London.
where is Doug Jones?
Shout-out to Virginia Hey on Farscape - I recall her having to leave the show due to health complications from all the blue makeup?
Immediately thought of Jim Carrey as the Grinch. Putting on makeup for that movie almost caused him to quit the movie

Huh, imagine that
Peter Weller would actually spend 6 hours to put on the suit, not only 90 minutes, the face alone would take another 6 hours.
Cate Blanchett - "Elizabeth" (1998)
Look so Heavy!! 😨👺
Tim Curry's Lord of Darkness of course caused psychological effects!!!! He haunted my nightmares when I was a child!!! LOL.
Doug Jones specializes in these roles! He loves the process!
Doug Jones has done multiple roles requiring crazy full-body make-up. He is still doing these roles bc he is that darn good of an actor.
Anjelica Huston as the Grant Witch deserves a mention too, Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger he wore that make uo in 7 movies!! 😮 Eddie Murphy in the Nutty Professor not only in his face but his body he sweat a lot!!!
Actor Doug Jones made his career out of this. Pale Man, Fauno, Abe Sapien, the Asset, Billy Butcherson, Saru. Doug Jones deserves credit for the hours he's in the makeup chair day after day, year after year for movies and shows.
When filming was over, John Rhys-Davies burned his Gimli make-up.
I'm surprised that Paul Freeman didn't get an honorable mention for playing Ivan Ooze in MMPR The Movie. He had a lot of trouble with his makeup
These actors sure took one for the team by going through these grueling efforts in looking like entirely different people when in prosthetic makeup. Respect to them.
Yeah. I would definitely portray a certain character without having to spend 8 hours of makeup.
You forgot Michael chikles From the fantastic four, playing the thing and you left out everybody from the monsters
The Goonies, John Matuszak spent 5 hours in the chair 🪑 becoming Sloth.
Oscar Isaac went through hell for Apocalypse
I'd include the cast of Freaked. Especially Alex Winter, who had to direct and act in full makeup.
You forgot Micheal Chiklis as The Thing in Fantastic 4 and Fantastic 4 Rise of the Silver Surfer.
I feel like Doug Jones should’ve gotten on this list. Filming Hellboy, Pans Labyrinth, The Shape of Water sounds very extremely tough while using practical effects.
I was so distracted by how bad the CGI is around the ghouls nose
Ron Perlman back in the day as Vincent in Beauty and the Beast?
Wow.
Figured there'd be no Michael Jai White or John Leguizamo for Spawn.
I personally feel that Boris Karloff as the Frankenstein Monster and The Mummy, and Lon Chaney Jr. as the Wolf Man should be on this list. All those three characters became icons for their amazing makeup by Jack Pierce, but were really painful to wear behind the scenes. Jack Pierce was known for using “out-of-the-kit” makeup techniques and he would often use materials such as cotton, collodion and spirit gum to create facial features for his makeups, which were very uncomfortable and agonizing for the actors to wear, and it took a long time to put on the makeup (like up to 8 hours a day) and almost equally as long and painful to take it off.
Why Jeff Goldbums is not here for his work in the Fly?
What about Ryan Reynolds in the Deadpool movies or Kelsey Grammer and Nicolas Hoult as Beast in the X-Men movies?
Elephant Man was a great movie. Terribly sad story
Doug Jones did not make it on the list? Wow! He is fantastic in movies and TV!
I feel so bad for Jim Carrey. NO ONE should have to suffer that much for their craft.
I was also thinking of Tommy Lee jones as two-face in Batman forever, Hugo Waving as Red Skull and Liam Neeson as Darkman
I heard the makeup used on Brendan Fraser for The Whale was pretty brutal for him 😮💨
I had to watch this video to make sure Buddy Ebsen made it high on the list. I remember hearing about another makeup incident that is more amusing than horrible. In the original Willy Wonka movie the girl that played Violet started turning purple in math class one day. Apparently the makeup got into her pores and started to resurface at a bad time.
What we--okay, THEY--do for art
The fact that they keep cutting the noses of these scary looking creatures.
One that should have been on this list or in a future list: Michael Rooker in Slither.
if you pause at 3:22 you can see that Tim Curry's right contact lens (left side of the picture) has shifted. looks to have rotated a bit
no surprise that Jim Carrey is #1

Absolutely! Jim Carrey's incredible makeup transformations have left a lasting impression on so many of us.
i should have known buddy epson would make it, poor dude didn't even get the part because of it
How the Grinch stole Christmas live action was terrible, but Jim Carrey is Gold.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Star Trek: Enterprise -- Before swinging a frightening bat on The Walking Dead, Jeffrey Dean Morgan was cast as a Xindi Reptilian in the episode "Carpenter Street". Every part of his body not underneath the uncomfortable costume had to have prosthetic makeup, which took many hours to apply. He was still relatively unknown as an actor at the time, and he is on record as saying working on this episode nearly made him walk away from acting completely.
"tim curry is unrecognizable in Legend" to the eye, but you can recognize that voice, anyone who grew up with Wild Throneberrys can recognize it
A lot of people don't know the process of putting on the right amount of make-up for movies. 🎉

A ham sandwich walks into a bar and orders a beer. The bartender says, “sorry, we do not serve food here."
I thought Heath Ledger as Joker was gonna be on this list!
Arnold Schwarzenegger’s make up process for Terminator 2 should hav been mentioned.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan played an alien on Star Trek Enterprise and the make-up process was such an ordeal, he seriously considered never acting again. Thank god, he didn't make good that promise.
They missed Virginia Hey on Farscape. She left the show due to the extensive prosthetic makeup upsetting her kidneys.
I hope we see Mystique in another X-Men movie and I hope they use CGI instead of an actress enduring grueling hours of makeup.
Doug Jones should have played The Grinch. Jim Carrey is amazing but Doug Jones has the temperament and training to endure the ordeals of that type of make up.
I used to think Brian Thompson was the actor in Legend & not Tim Curry
Virginia Hay, blue Delvian, Pa'u Zotoh Zhaan, of Farscape had to leave the show because the makeup was making her ill. She left the show early in the third season for health and personal reasons: the prosthetic makeup worn over her head and chest to achieve Zhaan's appearance and the stress of the long filming days caused her kidneys to bleed,
It's a shame what they say about the first RoboCop, but it was MUCH HARDER for Robert John Burke in RoboCop 3. With its large dimensions, he had to fit into the RoboCop suit, which was almost never changed to suit his needs. And unlike RoboCop 1, RoboCop 3 is considered a bad film (although, in my opinion, it is quite good).
In 2024, I feel like Practical Make Up should be quicker.
Brent Spiner played silver-skinned Data in Star Trek: The Next Generation, a 90's tv show. As a primary character for 7 years plus additional feature movies, and later Star Trek: PIcard. Although he often detailed the time-consuming process in interviews I seldom would have classified the statements as a complaint. In present years, I do feel that his skin complexion is very poor probably as a result of the makeup process.
I would add Michael Jai White in Spawn too
It makes me wonder how the hell Doug Jones went through all his films wearing all that heavy make-up and prosthetics. There is no doubt that actor would have suffered psychological damage at some point for it.
At their salaries, yeah, I could handle it…
Surprised Doug Jones isn't on this list
My vote goes to the various castmembers of Star Trek, guys like Ethan Phillips, Armin Shimmerman, Michael Dorn. And Doug Jones, where is he on this list? He's practicaly the king of prosthetics and giving a mayor performance during the act.
What about Jim Cavazel in the Passion of the Christ?!
You forgot Jeff Goldblum in The Fly.
I probably would be able to handle a few hours in a makeup chair, depending on what chemicles come in the makeup though. I would probably avoid a few for sure to be safe.
It would have been very easy for Jim Carrey to not be able to give such a caring performance from how much suffering that costume and makeup gave him, But his comedic genius will always come first
Hopefully the makeup that Christina Ricci did for Penelope wasn’t bad
