He's a pretty terrible actor in my eyes. Always seems like he's trying too hard. The Riddler was the worst part of the Batman, pretty much thanks to him. He's only really been good when he's mute (Little Miss Sunshine) or borderline retarded (Prisoners)

A lot of people didn’t like the third act of the movie but that was my favorite part of the movie simply because I loved De Leon so much. I hope she gets cast in more things because she blew me away. I’d love to see Rian Johnson cast her in the next Knives Out movie. Also, are we really gonna say that Pearl was Goth’s once in a lifetime performance? Have you seen Infinity Pool? That girl is always on top of her game and she’ll 100% win an Oscar one day.

I don’t use the word “snub” lightly. To me, for it to be a snub it has to have been a contender to actually win. Performances who we consider deserving 4th or 5th picks are not snubs and just natural results of competition. With that said, there were two snubs last year imo: Danielle Deadwyler and Top Gun Maverick for cinematography (I could also argue Mia Goth, but we all knew that wasn’t happening).

Danielle Deadwyler and Tang Wei were Oscar-worthy and on par with Yeoh and Blanchett. It would have been the most epic lineup, but alas... We have entire lineup of Supporting Actresses who were better than Jamie Lee Curtis whose Oscar aged like milk, only months after it happened. Whether we talk about Dolly De Leon, Keke Palmer, Jessie Buckley, or Nina Hoss, each of these snubbed women would be a better winner than JLC. As for Viola... Well, what happened? Frances Fisher happened. She made people believe Davis and Deadwyler were safe, something we all knew was not true, Blanchett and Yeoh being the only one safe.

Very unexpected #1, but that was such a jawdropping and galvanizing performance of madness (Brian, Did you see Infinity Pool with Alexander Skarsgard earlier this year? I'd say Mia's performance is even more insane and batshit crazy in that movie than even Pearl if we're talking horror) The Danielle Deadwyler, Dolly De Leon, and Viola Davis snubs STILL sting, they were all phenomenal and easily should have replaced 2 in lead and 1 in supporting. I could totally see your reasoning for Nina Hoss, and much like Marina De Tavira in Roma, she would have been a 100% left field nomination that would have been totally deserved. A lot of good inspired choices, I thought Keke Palmer was electric in Nope and would have been a great nomination either in lead or supporting. Tang Wei was also very good in Decision To Leave. Another great video, Brian! I hope we'll get to see this topic around February for this upcoming season, lol.

Jamie Lee Curtis won because she was able to combine slapstick with American cosmopolitan behaviour and inclinations. on a film that was a somewhat like a Hong Kong movie comedy gendres And she and Michelle Yeoh had some firecracker chemistry, more so than Cate Blanchett and Nona Hoss. The scene where he sees the photo of Mitzi and Bennie and takes in just how happy she is but also how this happiness is because she is finally with the man she actually loves. I do disagree about Jamie Lee Curtis, I think she was a great supporting character, and will give you one "bad boy" for suggesting Michelle Williams drop to supporting to possibly win, since you've done video's against that sort of thing happening. It's my top pet peeve about Oscars. When you do a video on the Woman King, can you comment on if you think the controversy about it may have had some influence in it not getting Oscar nominations. I work in a company with many immigrants from Western Africa, Nigeria, Mali and Ghana who were not pleased with this film and the depiction of the Dahomey tribe, which they considered a total lie and were very vocal about it, yet not so much on social media reviewers. I live in Nebraska, so I would think if I was hearing it here, the East and West Coast must have heard about it.

I haven't seen all of those films, but I completely agree about those that I have - Dolly De Leon, and particularly Mia Goth and Danielle Deadwyler. I would say those two gave the two best performances of the year (even over Yeoh and Blanchett). Goth also had other great performances in X and Infinity Pool it was her year - but all her performances were in horror films... It seems they only get the Academy's attention once or twice in 30 years (Misery and The Silence of the Lambs).

I'm sure there were and is Hollywood politics at play. Come on... the only Black woman who has given an Oscar-winning performance in a leading role is Halle Berry (Monster Ball) over the course of 90+ years... now that is beyond absurd... still not surprising for this AWARD SHOW.

I found nothing groundbreaking, or innovative or daring in that film and was unimpressed by Michelle Williams' rather hammy performance, and I love her in just about everything she's done. I would have much rather seen Danielle Deadwyler get the nod instead.removed from Best Actress it was her, and replaced her with Danielle Deadwyler. And I also think Rachel Sennott was a total scene stealer in Bodies, Bodies, Bodies. I would have been thrilled if she had been nominated.

@@marrmart7690 Well, if you really think about it, a supporting performance nominated in a lead category is a lot less problematic than a lead performance that gets placed in the supporting category. I mean, if a la Anthony Hopkins in Silence, an actor can make an 18 minute performance be so memorable that it wins in the lead category, well then more power to the actor. The short performance that is so impactful that it wins in lead is far more difficult to pull off than the other way around. Louise Fletcher is another great example of this.

To me it was clear when I saw the Woman King that Viola would miss. There was no passion from critics, she was not the clear lead, summer action mainstream film and the fact that she is an actors actor resulted in a predictable SAG nom, Globes had a room they nominated her too, critics choice followed cause with those two noms already they want to predict the Oscars and Bafta likes her although that was the strongest precursor that she got. However all those automatic precursor noms without any passion should not be taken seriously, especially in these days.

Viola Davis, while a talented artist, should have won for Doubt. But we’re at the point now if she isn’t nominated and winning for every appearance, somehow it comes off as a racist snub. Paul Dano is grossly underrated and should have been nominated for There will be Blood. Mark rylance is brilliant, however plays a variant of a core character. Margot Robbie is complete Oscar bate, yes bate. I say give it to her for Barbie, and let her live in infamy with Gwyneth Paltrow.

Michelle Williams gave her own unique interpretation of her role in The Fabelmans. Michelle in real life is a very dignified lady and in fact most of her other roles show that she is not a demurred housewife. But in The Fabelmans she tried to act out the role of a housewife filled with genuine fantasies do that even audiences can forgive her unfaithfulness. Her creative spark is more than Pail Dano when in supporting acting categories, they are the ones that give room for a mixed,,(mnnag of creative acts, so Michelle Williams in fact has turned the table around.

One snub per category: Actress: Mia Goth for Pearl. Actor: Diego Calva for Babylon. Supporting Actress: Dolly Del Leon for Triangle of Sadness Supporting Actor: Paul Dano for The Fabelmans The leading categories I kind of undestand, because Pearl was too horror, too camp, and Babylon too divisive. It's sad, but it's the way the Oscar has work for a long long time. The supporting categories are a lot weirder to me, because they were the two better performances in two big Oscar contenders, and were the ones getting most of the buzz and the nominations prior to. Dano, at this point, is just so sad, like he personally ofended everyone in the academy or something.

Brian, I love love love your videos but one thing working against Viola Davis was the historical revision of the Woman King. The role the Dahomey Amazons played in facilitating the transatlantic slave trade made Viola’s selection very politically dangerous. I think there was an understanding among the Academy that recognizing Davis’s turn would open them up to a conversation about why we chose to celebrate a group of people who enslaved and sold Africans to the Europeans. Along with the producers and writers being white women, it created a situation that was best avoided in the interest of protecting the Academy from scandal.
