Shane i have been converting certain blu-rays to 4K HDR like Avatar. Been using Davinci Resolve on my Apple iMac achieving this. Looks like a bought 4K movie afterwards. Works 100%

Great list Shane. Been waiting for this. Dune is a great disc and a great film also. I totally agree about Ambulance. Its definitely a demo disc. I really enjoyed the film too. I do use a soundbar but its atmos with a sub and rear speakers so a bit of a halfway house but its still pretty good. I dont the setup for separates at the moment

He mentioned that he had to reevaluate the sound and brought it down to an 8. I felt there was enough bass but my setup has 4-12" woofers in my front left and right, 15" main woofer, 2-4" woofers in my centre channel, 4-4" woofers in my sides, 8-4" woofers in my rears, 2-4" woofers in my front height channels and 4-3" woofers in my rear height channels. So well more than enough woofers to get that bass.

Actually, the sound is not that good unfortunatly... so I agree with Shane. As Ive said before, the amazing visuals kinda "fool your ears". ;)

@@HomeCinemaJunkie I would have to agree the atmos mix is definitely not as good as say aqua man or midway. But the score is really good and the sound design is good. It’s just not an aggressive mix like others on Shane’s top ten. I think 8/10 is a good score for it.

Nice List thx 4 that. I saw ambulance yesterday and really liked it as a movie too.

The biggest issue with Dune is that they didn't use the expanded aspect ratio. Such a missed opportunity... Maybe they'll release a "special edition" with the expanded shots... One can hope... As for audio. My humble 5.1 system handled it well. Finally moving into my own later this year and I'll put in some heights and will have to play a demo disc.

I don’t know what these studios are thinking releasing these IMAX films in 2.39:1. This movie would look so good if they used the proper aspect ratio. I think that they don’t like releasing films with variable aspect ratio because people complain, but these people don’t understand that they’re getting more picture. I only pay $10-$15 for 4K Blu-Rays, but I’d have no issue dropping $30 for an IMAX Enhanced version. I don’t need it for every film, but it would be great for Dune.

Dude, you need to add height channels for an Atmos setup-it’s like night and day. I remember being blown away by my first 5.1 setup in 2000, but Atmos is just another animal.

IMAX is a format intended for a screen that exceeds your biological field of view (I know y'all already know this, but it's key and it needs to be pointed out). Knowing that, it means most expanded shots in IMAX retain the same effect as a regular screen: this is especially true for mid, close-ups, details. That's because, again, while it makes for a better immersion, your field of view basically frames the image as intended. You can see where I'm going with this: on TV, an IMAX medium shot is much a larger shot, completely losing the intended effect... unless you of course sit close AF to the TV. This is true for basically every type of shot but master shots/establishing shots/environment/etc. It also heavily impacts viewing because composition can be iffy for these expanded shots (are some details are not meant to be looked at and you won't look at them when watching on an IMAX screen but you'll definitely will on a TV). While it's cool when discs sport IMAX shots, because indeed those shots really look cool, those shot mostly lose their intended effect. When Disney put IMAX versions of Marvel films on Disney+, some directors of those movies actually pointed out those versions were NOT intended for home viewing, and kinda softly protested this initiative. Nolan, on the other hand, reformats the IMAX shots into 16:9, but they are not true IMAX shots. Digital IMAX shots instead are 16:9, so while framing doesn't retain the effect, the composition won't be affected too much. So, I wouldn't be surprised if it was Villeneuve himself to have vetoed this release, because they would have a different effect anyways. And, generally speaking, you should look no further than Zack Snyder's Justice League, which has 100% true IMAX shots, to understand on TV has a completely different effect then it was intended.

I just watched Ghostbusters Afterlife off of HBO or Showtime and the AQ was very good. Definitely getting that on 4K.

What's crazy is that video sales are practically half today of what they used to be in 2019 and less than 15% of that is 4k UHD with Blurays still account for triple the sales over 4k UHDs. The death of 3d sealed it for me especially the fact that TVs no longer support it. Last time I was at the Barnes & Noble bookstore, they were downsizing their video section and selling all their movies. This is scary because some of the best movies are only offered on disc and sometimes can be pretty expensive to own.

Watching 3D movies with VR headsets is nice. I rip them to my PC and then play them on my VR headset, though I'd recommend one with a high resolution so you can't see the pixels. I've got the first Oculus quest and the pixels are visible for me so I'd recommend to get one with a higher resolution screen than the Oculus Quest 1.

sometimes I get the feeling that old movies have better and more impactful (you get an effect where you expect it should be) surround soundtracks than new ones Maybe back then there was this love for movies, nowadays it's just bussiness. Of course there are movies with great sound but TGM was very dissappointing in audio.

Shane, thanks for posting this video. Like many have already stated, I really enjoy your videos. You knew that you were going to cause a controversy by not putting Top Gun Maverick in your Top 10 for the year.

Realky nice 4k summary. Only thing I wouldnt agree on is Resident Evil video. I would have given it a 6 due some really bad compression artifacts and noise. I have the Scandinavian version so it might be that we got screwed again... BTW, your wife has great taste! 😀

I'm a Michael Bay fan and love my share of action movies but man Ambulance drained me of action movies for the rest of the year. It was constant action left and right with no rest really in-between. It's a good movie tho but not one of the best Bay films out there. I'm still waiting for some to come on 4K to get them.

Shane, I don’t get the multiple subwoofers. I have $700-800 Hsu subwoofer. It rattles everything in the house. I even had the police called on me from a guy who was over a block away. Why would I need another one? If I were to get one, does it have to be the exact same sub that I have? If not, have any recommendations?

Yes kaleidoscope is meant for the more fluent crowd. But I think the real issue is why doesn't Netflix, HBO, Amazon, peacock, etc. do a better job to proliferate better quality streaming. Some stuff sounds very nice but there's still has a lot of stuff that doesn't have the higher quality streams. Most stuff is PCM that is forced through a five channel surround system. Thank God KZread does a good job who is stereo for music concert videos. It would be really nice if someone discussed all this. I can read about it but it's difficult to find something well written that focuses on these issues very well. Are we advancing in streaming better quality audio?

I love the tech specs as much as the next guy, but I’d be damned before I watch and or add horrible movies to my collection just because they look/sound good. Most of the movies on this list (video/audio quality not withstanding) aren’t worth the time. I know you said the list isn’t based on the film, but I don’t know what the point is though. The actual movie is everything! Great video/audio is secondary to that.

Ambulance was definitely one of the cleanest and sharp 4K picture quality I've seen. Only Gemini Man beats it in PQ. The drone shots looked so good

Resident Evil Racoon City was a great movie and the Atmos effects blew me away with the music swirling around on the height channels.

I have only just watched top gun maverick on New Year’s Eve I watched the first one before it both on 4k disc I thought the first one sounded better there was more activity in the individual speakers on the first one they could’ve made the second one a lot better

One of my fav movies but there were still a few others that would have come before it.

I thought GhostBusters was great. It looks and sounds fantastic on my 7.2.4 theater!

Maverick should have been #1 for video quality alone. Best 4k movie PQ ever.

One of the only lists to (rightly) include the matrix near the top. I would’ve had top gun and the godfathers in there though for sure. I wasn’t that impressed with ambulance, or Dune. Maybe I just didn’t like the movies but they certainly weren’t as impressive as top gun or the matrix for me

Shane thank you for your videos, out of curiosity how many speakers and subs do you have in your theater? You have a killer system with Trinnov, Kaleidescape, JVC 4K projector! The Batman was definitely not worth it compared to Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy in addition the actors in the new Batman sucked!

Top Gun 2 was ludicrous and not a good film but the visuals were amazing. And I thought the Matrix 4’s PQ/AQ was great and there were some fantastic beats to its story but the screenplay needed another pass through and the effects needed more prep time. To me it’s the 2nd best Matrix behind the first.

@@damonappel 3D is the best way to watch them but I missed out on the home 3D TV trend. They will still look absolutely gorgeous on a 4k disc.

I'm new to 4k and I have realized that most KZread reviewers manly or only focus on the technical aspects of a disk. I guess, I'm old school that way but I will probably never be able to follow that thought. If a film is bad, really bad, why would I want to "enjoy" this badness in the best possible quality? OK, if a movie is "good" or "bad" is (at least in part) a matter of taste. But there are some solid criteria that should rule out the real clunkers. Otherwise we accept cinematic faeces as masterful art as long as they are wrapped in a pretty package. To my eye (or gusto) this would amount to the same as eating a stinky fish wrapped into freshly backed white bread. But as the great Dalton put it: "Opinions vary." And stinky fish could be delicious. Ask the Swedish. 😉

What you want to seek out are movie review channels such as Jeremy Jahns and a hundred other ones on KZread. This way you'll know if the movie is good or bad. My channel is home theater/ Audio Video technology based which would include movies and music used to show off said technology. The titles reviewed here are ones that will push your audio video system to hopefully its fullest technical potential. Just because a movie is heartfelt and enjoyable means nothing to its technical merit. Many people who have spent thousands or more on home theaters that want to hear all their speakers working or a ton of impressive visuals come to my channel to see if the film will be a showcase for their setup. People aren't coming here for my opinions on the story or enjoyment of a film. You could check out the review of a movie first then come and see if the Blu-ray is worthwhile here. This is a tech channel not a movie review channel. I'm am not a film critic.

Was looking forward to this list. Gotta agree with the Maverick sound rating. Loved the film, but was expecting more. I have a very capable system and felt short changed on the Atmos side. Lower channels did not disappoint, but when going 11 channels or higher, I want it all. I had the good fortune of enjoying it in my home and at what "That Home Theater Dude" calls "The Lab" (An incredible experience). The height information was a letdown:(

I actually agree with what you spoke about for each movie..i was pretty disappointed with the atmos mix for maverick..I loved resident evil and ambulance was a huge surprise for me..the first shooting scene outside the bank was amazing..the bass sounding when they were shooting the guns were outstanding..

The highest grossing movie of 2022 would've been Avatar 2 if it had been around for a few more days. Top Gun Maverick ended the year with 1.487 billion dollars whereas Avatar 2 ended the year with 1.37 billion worldwide, well on it's way to doing more than $2 billion.

I would like to have the films combined score from the actual story, actor performance, director and editing skills. Why spend your hard earned money on a movie if it actually sucks and will not give you, or the people you show it to, any enjoyment. If you like to show off a great picture and sound then you could run one of the many demos. If a movie score where 9 or 10 I would buy it regardless of quality, but if it got a 5 or 6 I would hesitate but would buy if it had above average technical qualities. The scale for giving points would be 1 for disaster and have bandings, bad colors and analog noise and 5 for average and 10 for the best that can be achieved with today's technology. A DVD's technical qualities would be judged against other DVD's and Blu-Rays among other Blu-Rays and 4k among other 4k's as they are in different price ranges and require different investments in hardware. I don't know how it's possible to say 9,7 or 9,8 when choosing between 6 or 7 would depend of my own personal mood for the day when I set the score. If the lowest possible score where 9 then I would understand the scoring system if that scale where used.

Editing, Acting skills, director, and story are all highly subjective. If the video looks excellent it looks excellent. If the audio is not active enough, I have a graph that shows exactly what it's doing. Those two are less subjective compared to me liking a movie and saying it's great. It's like saying Black Panther was worthy of an Oscar nomination for best picture. Really. That's why I don't add my opinion on anything but A/V.

Although I understand why you left Top Gun: Maverick out of the Top 10 list because of its somewhat disappointing audio, I grade movies on not only the video & audio quality, but overall how good the movies are themselves as a whole. Which is why TG: Maverick, Dune, Ambulance and Elvis are my Top Picks. As for certain others however, it would Not have mattered how high Matrix Resurrection, Morbius or Resident Evil: Raccoon City had been on video and audio quality, there's no way I'd ever watch those immediately flushable turd films. I didn't watch them at the cinemas and you could never pay me enough to watch a hard copy or streaming version on video release. Not even if they had been perfect 10s for both video and audio. Well, you could pay me, but it would have to be in the high 5 figure range at least. Matrix Resurrection for instance wasn't much of a "Resurrection." More like DOA.

Kaleidoscope is a nice movie System but costs for movies are absurd so why not by the Blu-ray. Are they ever going to come up with a higher quality streaming service? HBO sucks, Netflix most often sucks, and on and on. Streaming is getting better more bandwidth yet streaming it's not getting better. I would pay more for better streaming. I don't like buying movies just wanna stream them higher quality uncompressed. Or buffer storage. Why can't they do this? Crazy so much bandwidth available these days

Movies are usually around $5 more on Kaleidescape at launch except for Warner Bros. They tend to price higher for some reason like $10 more. Some times they can be the same price as the BD at launch. If you wait a month or so you can normally get the movies on sale for $9.99 or less. That’s when I get mine. The BD’s take far longer to get that cheap. So saying prices are absurd for movies is totally false. The player itself however does cost quite a bit.

Shane, all of the DTS: X fans might come after you for not including the "better" format on this list! 🤣 I think my favorite disc from 2022 is Dune.

I seen Resident Evil Welcome to Raccoon City in theaters I did like it but I like the other ones better since I love Milla Jovovich in the Resident Evil movies and I sure do missed her in those movies too and the cgi in RE WTRC was so terrible and they couldn’t bring all of the monsters in the movie the tyrant mr X and Neptune Yawn plant 42 and many etc and Ada Wong is so waste in the reboot of RE and they should of just got with RE1 and make it based off of the first game being based off of 2 games was a huge mistake in my opinion and for me I give the movie a 6/10 stars but not as good as the original 6 Resident Evil movies in my opinions bro

Why are the best 4k blu rays some of the worst movies. Thats unfortunate.

I got really bored with the Batman and couldn’t bare any more I turned it off after 35 minutes.

Man she gotta speak up. Can barely hear wtf she’s saying

morbius.. on any list is seriously classic.. I need a refund for the time of my life I wasted watching that movie. one of the worst movies I have ever seen ever.. soooo bad..

There are so many garbage movies on this list, truly a waste of a 4K disc

Useless LIST as a lot of these movies are crap. YOU can EASILY find TOP 10 movies that are actually good & have great audio/video.

What is the point of purchasing these movies that even you say are bad? So in your world I should invite my friends to watch 5 minutes of Moonfall just so I can say "Wait till the sub woofers kicks in!". Your world seems very shallow and pretentious.

Top movies I would recommend for a get together are: Top Gun Maverick, Ambulance, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, The Northman, The Menu, RRR, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Puss In Boots: The last Wish, Ticket to Paradise, The Lost City, Elvis, Thor Love & Thunder, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, & Avatar The Way of Water.
