Toot Blues
Музыка
In the late 1980s, Timothy Duffy, a penniless North Carolina musicology student, set out to document and preserve traditional southern roots and blues music. On his travels from Winston-Salem's drinkhouse music scene, an off-the-grid hotbed of gritty traditional blues, to deep-south family run churches, he found purpose and inspiration from a cast of amazingly talented, pure and unique set of characters (the artists!!).
Toot Blues remarkably captures the true essence and talent of the artists from Guitar Gabriel, a 'homeless magic potion selling' blues genius; to Willa Mae Buckner, a snake charming elderly woman taunting delightfully raunchy blues; to Beverly 'Guitar' Watkins, a grandmother who continues to tear up the stage and play a killer electric guitar behind her head; to Bishop Dready Manning and family churning out homebrewed rockabilly-gospel; to Boo Hanks, an 80 year-old bluesman recording an album for the very first time; to blind guitarist, Cootie Stark, mesmerizing crowds world-wide while never failing to find his way home by himself.
Shortly after befriending and championing for these artists Tim quickly realized the limitations set upon them by living in poverty, not only in their struggles to survive and support their families but also their ability to afford time and outlets to continue with their deepest passions-music, by a simple twist of fate, Tim along with his wife Denise, began the Music Maker Relief Foundation.
With rare footage, interviews, and numerous live performances, the film documents these unique musicians, brought together through the Music Maker community and their shared and vital musical heritage.

Just checked all these wonderful comments. Thanks so much for watching the film. Tim Duffy
God bless them and the rest of the African ancestors that endured all they did, then turned around and gave the world sooo much beauty.
You gotta love black folks. That generation also and from those places has such a rich character and life.
Bless these people who are helping these old blues singer's.
As a fifty year old white Englishmen I am watching these blues players in awe. Such beautiful human beings with so much talent.

Well, really much of them Blues men were no beautiful beings at all. They often stay in jail, whiped their women, were murderers, players, pimps etc. Like you can hear in their lyrics.
I studied in Winston-Salem many years ago. I had the privilege of listening to some musicians in a small bar that usually gave them chance to perform. As I said, it was a privilege ManyGodz is right. That feeling and soul is not to be found anywhere else.
This isn't about quantity, skills and so on. This is about felling the music, living the music, be the music.
thank you so much Music Maker... and Timothy Duffy... what you have done is more than words and all I can say is Thank you thank you
Blues forever! I've recently started playing blues harmonica, love it, and the rich history of it, and the fact it brings all people together in peace!!!!

Um....WOW! I thought the Blues was (this kind of Blues) existed only in my iPhone. An eight's of me is invigorated.
Thanks for this great film ,there's never enough attention given to these great musicians , I've played guitar and harmonica from the age of 11-12 when I was about that age I'd take the bus downtown my folks thought I was going to the movies listening to John Estes and furry Lewis( and Johnny winter zz top magic dick ha) I sat in with furry at 14-15 at a place called the cozmic cowboy an old house on union Thatd been turned into a bar , in midtown here in Memphis where I grew up . These guys will never go away as long as they'res one southern boy ( white or black ) with a guitar and a porch , indeed your talking square one !
I wish I could give this a thousand thumbs up! Wonderful! Amen. Boogaloo and hallelujah!
greatest blues documentary i've ever seen!!
I would like to have a grand mother like Beverly "Guitar" Watkins.... :) now she is an inspiration to me.......Regards from Chile.........
This is incomparable to any present "versions" of any music. Thank God for Tim and Denise!
It's sad but true that Americans have forgotten these genuine musicians with a full soul in their musics; who never ever ask no recognition; soon they would wipe out by disco, pop, and other alternative kind of musics. Poor Americans, they don't know what they have 'till they loose 'em.
America's greatest resource. I think the best chance of preserving this is the way I found it - here. I hope all of these great artists are making videos and high quality recordings. This music will live on.
To any Blues fan, this is a s story to lift your soul
Great film. It's wonderful that this music has been perserved.
Human. Important. Touching. Full of brilliance. A wonderful legacy for both the musicians and those who produced this film. Life is like a water bug - a little drinking, a little dancing a little dying.
Wow ! This Ferguson dude is a sublime guitarist.
GUITAR WATKINS gave 58 hours of the best time I have had in 40 years; she Woke Me Up and got me back into True Music. At 75 or 76 she is as Full of MUSIC as ever. I have never had so much Fun, just listening to her stories.

Wow Im 20 years old and i play the blues, this means a lot to me. Im just a puerto rican kid from nyc and i see i got some things to learn. I don't think i saw one person in this vid who wasn't truly gifted. Some on a legendary status in my opinion.
Its just great that somebody cares enough to help these wonderful old musicians. A great video, so good to see where these unknowns live, the country, the conditions they live in.
Thanks Folkstreamer, Great documentary...
Fantastic history thanks for this wonderful film
The best music I've heard! Such lucky people to meet such talent!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tim Duffy and his sweet wife Denise have given the better part of their lives to ensure the ROOTS of American Music will live on. So proud of you my man (and Lady)! Thanks Timbo and Denise! (What else can I get???) LOL. Keep doing whatcha doing...
This made me cry , it was so great.
So happy this was documented..American treasures.
Man! Man, this is where its at! I feel it unlike heavy metal that I cold play well. However it has no soul, spirit, the only emotion is anger from metal . Blues is from un taught but a gift of the great spirit! Did IT!,man o ,man.
What a wonderful project. It's similar to the Buena Vista Social Club project with old-time, authentic Cuban music. Everywhere people react with enthusiasm when heartfelt music is being played. I'm so happy to hear those old bluesmen, the documentation work is topnotch.
They all say blues is a feeling, that's just a sentence but it mean a lot and i know that. When you start playing blues and feel your blues and express with that music, it's beautifull and it's a good way to make you feel better. Thank you for this movie
Thanks from Australia. This music is the reason I got into the blues. It's good to take a break from more modern blues and get back to the roots!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"Crossroads" Reality style. It's priceless material.
I'm humbled and uplifted by what has been achieved for these wonderful people and their music. Accolades are due.

Thanks from Australia. This music is the reason I got into he blues. It's good to take a break from more modern blues and get back to the roots!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
love playing with them!!! Beverly andCapitain Luke! Adolphus and Pura Fe in Argentina !
Great film. Thanks so much, Folkstreamer.
amazing work, tim and denise are visionaries, something this world lacks these days, preserving, discovering, and giving comfort to all these great people/musicians living in poverty and isolation, this is a great film and gives me hope for the future by preserving a great tradition of the past.
Glad I found this, I fell asleep listening, you can just feel the passion and true feelings of these artists when they play!!!!
I loved this documentary
Thank you for making this film, and to all the Wonderful Blues Musicians.
what a great film, what an incredible journey this must have been to learn from and experience these musicians
Awesome presentation! Great visuals, and the music, awesome don't do it justice!!!!
This is wonderful beautiful American History. I am a history teacher and I will make sure my class of high schoolers watch all of this. Thank you, creating this documentary this is history and our young people need to see and respect this art form and these truly gifted artists.
Hats off to Music Maker...I will show this video as free entertainment to a local group this winter, How can it get any better than this? Thanks so much!!!!

Jens Henriksen hello to you and your family and friends and everybody over there.
Great job! Music maker is a modern day version of the Alan Lomax projects back in the 30's. Keep it comin'.
Thank you for this documentary. I think I was the first to rate on IMDb. LOL!!! This is just priceless.
Cool John Ferguson's electric performance at 29:00 and the solo he does although deeply rooted in 'country blues' seems to transcend that genre of music and go into what I would call 'blues-rock' or maybe even rock, especially the solo. A great player and performer. I enjoyed all the artists! Thanks for this upload!
Thanks for sharing this treasure.
awsome video thanks for uploading!! Great job your doing blowing new life in to these people who were feeling a little bit stranded!!
That was too much fun! Thank you so much for posting this wonderful documentary!!!
It's only correct & fitting, plus it makes me feel better about being a human being alive today, just to know that these great musicians are actually getting their storys told & being shown some respect & value for their life long contributions to blues music. A brilliant documentary - and thank you I really enjoyed it & learnt a lot.
Great !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is an awesome documentary!
Great, thank you so much!!!!
I still play deep Country Blues...
Brilliant Video! Thank you for posting this fantastic record of Blues music.
Awesome... your the Alan Lomax of the 21st century. I actually seen Cool John Ferguson in Ottawa Ontario Canada in 2004 if I recall. It was by total fluke as my friends and I decided to check out this unknown blues artist to us and we were glad we did. He blew our socks off, just a great musician, made it seem effortless. I bought his CD as I knew this was rare. Great stuff man! Jeff
i like this movie thank you for the upload
What a great service to these fellow musicians. Music can surely get you over the blues, or it can give you the blues, too. This got me up in the best of ways.
INCREDIBLE Documentary. I have a couple of Cds from Music Maker and I'm always amazed my these artists that were in the shadows. Thanks again
Great tribute to these truly great American artists
Little Freddie is alive and well and plays often in and around New Orleans. I think he's around 78 now. Catch him while you can.
