Blues Guitar Documentary - "Busking The Blues" Starring Keni Lee Burgess

Фильм және анимация

I shot this film almost 3 years ago! Keni Lee Burgess, who has loads of guitar tutorials here on youtube, allowed me to follow him around the streets and subways of Manhattan to document his lifestyle, that being a busker.
I was so incredibly lucky that I was able to make contact with the son of the inventor of the resonator guitar John E Dopyera. Although the film was super fun to make, the end result from a film makers stand point is that I wasn't happy with the video quality. I shot on a miniDV camera, wish I had an HD at that time but couldn't afford one.
Please enjoy the film. Feel free to leave feed back. Please visit kenilee burgess here on youtube.

What moved me the most in this film was how Keni was able to play a guitar for Dopyera Jr. made by Dopyera's father. I mean basically 2 generations were bridged together in that room at that moment by a guitar and a song. What a wonderful moment for me and for Keni and Bill as well. So many other feelings I just don't know how to convey.

Awesome George. In my opinion, the video quality matches the subject matter. The blues is all about gritty, down to earth feelings and expressing those feelings with music. I think a slick, super HD format would take something away from it.

Great documentary. Before I played them. I wanted the metal bodied, after trying them I preferred the wooden bodied biscuit cone. Mark knopfler says he regrets putting the national on the cover of Brothers in Arms, as it unrealistically inflated the price. Because people are buying them for ornaments. This forced me to look at more affordable brands. My friend who’s played nationals , says my Gretsch alligator sounds the same as a national. One day if I have enough spare money I’m going to buy a national. Resonator guitar is my favourite sound produced by the guitar. It’s a haunting mystical human voice vibration. Similar to fiddle or scratching a record. Big love and respect from Northern England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧🇮🇪🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿☘️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇺🇸💚💛❤️🇺🇦

I thank you for this simple but informative vid. I am 62 and been playing guitar for years. I have discovered the joy of playing cigar box guitars about a year ago. I love these things so much, I have started building them and putting them on the market for sale. My company is called Panhandler Guitars because the body is a steam table pan, this is all I use. The necks and pickups are professionally built. I do the design and build myself. They are a blast to play and very easy to learn if you have a guitar background. I am very seriously thinking about busking here in Colorado and your input was eye opening. Thanks and Keep on Truckin

Great documentary. Kenni Lee's DVDs are what I'm using to learn the Cigar Box Guitar. He's a really good blues man and he replies to all comments on all of his videos. Lenni Lee captures the spirit as well as the sound of the blues. Don't feel bad about the quality if the video. It goes along with the spirit of the blues and especially hand made cheap cigar box guitars with only a few strings.

Not sure how I missed this video all those years ago considering I own an early National. Serial #315. Same green crinkle paint as yours, except the decades and juke joints have left it with only the paint on the back. Some put it in the late 20's, maybe 1930's, not sure. Nothing replicates the sound, I will go to my grave with this guitar. Well, not literally. :)

One of the best stories I've ever heard is from a friend of mine, he's 30 years older than me, and his late dad built two guitars, two Rickenbacker clones. One was given to him (his son) and the other was given to his best friend. So his best friend moved from town, took different directions in life, and now my friend searches for the second guitar to see if he can buy it. Number 001 and Number 002 xD I swear it's true, though I know hard to believe 'cause anyone on internet could write that...

Clay ton Thank you for your comment but being a hypocrit is what you seem to do well in Blues are not just for black people . Music is an expression, a language, you my friend see things sadly in a black or white scenario. The musician in this film is paying tribute to the muaical greats of blues singers past. Its" funny" how people just walk by without even a glance at someone whos playing great blues music. The same as how they walk by a drunk or beggar or handicapped person. To me its like theyre showing a huge emptiness in their life. Not a second for joy. Sad

This is a very interesting movie (video not film). I am a bit dismayed since you obviously know music and your subject is about music, you have poor sound. I mean off mike voice, bad sound balance from scene to scene (shot to shot also sometimes). Even if you did not have a competent boom man or the ability to do double system sound you could have improved things in post production. It is not so hard to do a cross fade. Not much you can do about the reverb of the voices when the mic was too far away but you could at least put in room tone when you cut to a title card. (You do know what room tone is?) Interesting doc but it could have been so much better.

  • @marshmelow

+arbeeex Hello and thank your advice. This was a digital film shot on an Canon XL2. Being this was a documentary, the sound was fine. The grittiness of the city subway and streets create a sound that is gritty and allows that forgiveness. I know what room tone is but I don't need room tone when I am in a room. I cannot use a room tone in a city subway, or in the streets, cutting away to a silent title card creates a focus on the text and it's has been done a many documentaries. Do I really need to hear trains in the background while a title card is up? We've already established where the subject is, no need for room tone. I couldn't use a boom, or lav mic. the sound from the trains is too over powering and more importantly, I wasn't supposed to be filming, a 600.00 permit is needed and this was a low budget documentary about a musician, who we hear fine, and could not draw too much attention so it was just me on camera and the musician. Again thank you for viewing.

Great docu, a lot of good and interesting, informative historical background; Keni Lee plays OK, but unfortunately, while he can belt-out a tune, he sure can't sing worth a damn ~ VERY annoying. The playing helps make up for it though.
